Crazy to think this song was written about the biblical tale of Samson: he was betrayed by his love (Delilah) and his eyes were gouged out by his enemies. He was chained to the pillars of a temple and ridiculed. Meanwhile, his hair (the source of his strength that Delilah had cut off while he slept) grew back. Over time his renewed strength allowed him to pull the temple down on those that had injured him. This song builds and builds, the baseline steady, till the crescendo of the story comes to the end, in a freakishly powerful way. I first heard this song back in 89' and was gobsmacked, "WHO ARE THE PIXIES?!" This live version might be their best version.

And that's how it's done. One of the greatest records from one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

This version just feels so raw and aggressive and very emotionally charged like he's remembering why he wrote the song and the rest of the band is matching his intensity and the audience is feeling the electricity in the air and don't care and want to scream along, and do, and it's perfect. I can't even listen to the regular version anymore.

The very last band of my bucket list to see live. For some reason, at 45 years old, I've continually missed them since being a fan since 1989 when I discovered them in the 6th grade. I'll finally be seeing The Pixies in Los Angeles this October, 2022!

You took me down the Rock N 'Roll path and thanks to you I developed my own musical tastes. Today, I discover that you left this world of your own free will, taking an overdose of pills until you were sound asleep. Dear brother, when I found out about that, coming to listen to this song was the only thing that occurred to me at the time, and here I am! listening Dark Necessities at 3 in the morning, while singing loudly and enjoying the music as if you are still with me to listen to it together. Brother, when you first showed me this song, you told me that we all had Dark Necessities hidden within us, but we weren't brave enough to show them to everyone. Now I understand it and I am sorry I understood it too late. I love you, brother, and I will always love you. Thank you for showing me these musical wonders. I will miss you today, tomorrow and always. Dark necessities will always be part of our designs, dear brother.

This is an amazing clip. Paz belting it out the end was haunting, and the best last verse of Gouge away I’ve ever seen. The whole damn band got ahold of that one. Wow. My wife got me tickets a few years back, wanted to see them ever since I was a kid. I am pretty quiet socially, and even I screamed this song with the crowd.
