Crazy to think this song was written about the biblical tale of Samson: he was betrayed by his love (Delilah) and his eyes were gouged out by his enemies. He was chained to the pillars of a temple and ridiculed. Meanwhile, his hair (the source of his strength that Delilah had cut off while he slept) grew back. Over time his renewed strength allowed him to pull the temple down on those that had injured him. This song builds and builds, the baseline steady, till the crescendo of the story comes to the end, in a freakishly powerful way. I first heard this song back in 89' and was gobsmacked, "WHO ARE THE PIXIES?!" This live version might be their best version.

@@dcbeemon the lead singer, Black Francis (a stage name, can't recall his given name) in an Esquire interview said something like "Samson had his eyes gouged out by his enemy the Philistines in a time of weakness, explaining the title of the song... it’s the best song on the record.” Before seeing that I had wondered where the heck he'd gotten his inspiration. This version just feels so raw and aggressive and very emotionally charged like he's remembering why he wrote the song and the rest of the band is matching his intensity and the audience is feeling the electricity in the air and don't care and want to scream along, and do, and it's perfect. I can't even listen to the regular version anymore.

Oh, My brother, my dear brother, he left this world yesterday & this was his favourite song. Still remember when you were 14, I was 10 and you showed me this song. I was fascinated! You took me down the Rock N 'Roll path and thanks to you I developed my own musical tastes. Today, I discover that you left this world of your own free will, taking an overdose of pills until you were sound asleep. Dear brother, when I found out about that, coming to listen to this song was the only thing that occurred to me at the time, and here I am! listening Dark Necessities at 3 in the morning, while singing loudly and enjoying the music as if you are still with me to listen to it together. Brother, when you first showed me this song, you told me that we all had Dark Necessities hidden within us, but we weren't brave enough to show them to everyone. Now I understand it and I am sorry I understood it too late. I love you, brother, and I will always love you. Thank you for showing me these musical wonders. I will miss you today, tomorrow and always. Dark necessities will always be part of our designs, dear brother.

The song is about Samson and Delilah. Samson is punished by God for wielding the jaw of a ass in battle; as a Nazirite he had taken an oath to keep himself sanctified, which meant (among other things) never to pollute himself by touching a dead thing. His holy fingers hence rubbed the bad charm, and so his unbreakable arms are broken and his invincible eyes are spooned. The story ends with Samson chained to the pillars by his enemies, who celebrate in his defeat with a three day party. Samson calls out to God; his strength returns enough for him to break the walls and kill everyone, including himself.

I mean, The Pixies are pretty well known to everyone that "gets into" music. If they're underrated then they're sitting just below the surface; everyone both within and surrounding Music loves The Pixies. They typify a sound ahead of so many others in their field. They have inspired so much that I challenge you to engage the world of musicians and become pleasantly surprised. They're great cover/warm up material. Get the juices flowing.
