It's an akuma and it's purpose on the show is to turn people evil also has telepathic powers; the holder is able to connect and communicate with the person telepathically through the mind. So the butterfly is called an akuma used by hawkmoth/monarch to akumatize people basically possessing people that are angry/sad to turn them into villians that try to capture ladybug's and catnoir's miraculous so hawkmoth can bring his wife back to life (catnoir's mom)
