This video is intended for students in the online AUSV 2520 Automatic Transmissions class at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. This class is normally taught face-to-face, but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, I am attempting to offer the class material online. Suggested quiz questions are shown below the video timeline.

There are people who teach and there are people who have the inherent ability to open the minds of other to allow them to see through the otherwise unknown with clarity. Anyone who has the opportunity to sit in the same room with this man should sit quietly with eyes, ears wide open in hopes to absorb as much as possible. I studied auto mechanics in Fenger HS in Chicago, in 1949, by a VERY knowledge teacher named "Mr Loizo". Truly the greatest teacher I have EVER known. He was a former GM engineer. I am 84 now and it took me this long to find a teacher I could call "second" ONLY to my beloved and late Mr Loizo". Thank you so much for making an old man's day in my waning years. Note: Automatic transmissions were in the VERY infant stages then; and obviously little was able to be taught to HS students. However, we WERE introduced to planetary gears using GM's Hydormatic Transmissions. As I recall, it had 3 sets of PG's. But that is ALL we were shown. But I never lost my craving for more. So I thirsted for more and more in various and sundry places all these ensuing years. But NOTHING helped me like your unprecedented video. I am blown away.... Wow! I understand it now. Wow! I feel like I could run down the road and "eat the bark off of trees". Yippee! May Jesus richly bless you and yours always dear sir. carl dixon

You are correct John. If you know about Fenger HS, you know they had two satellite schools to hold down the load during one's Freshman years. One was called "Burnside HS" (the one I attended) and the other was called Mt Vernon HS. I shall forever be blessed by going to Fenger. For it was one of America's very finest when it came to a true HS education (very rare today). The author of this video reminded me so much of the instructors at Fenger. As a result of the education I received, it helped immeasurably in my 45 yr career in the work place. Auto mechanics I didn't pursue, but NEVER lost my love for it. My career was in electrical and electronic engineering; and my electrical "shop" at Fenger; of course played a major role in that too. Again thanks to this wonderful modern day (rare indeed) instructor John Kelly. If one can't learn from him they can NOT learn. May Jesus bless him and you always dear friend.

Thanks for your reply. Are Burnside and Mt Vernon still there? Like to take a look as one of my interests is old school architecture. Unlike the schools that are built today, they were much more than just a box in years gone by.........thanks again for replying.. I luv Chicago....what a wonderful city... I just took a look on Google Earth. Is Burnside on Langley and Mount Vernon on Morgan St? Mount Vernon looks especially beautiful. I'll have to go take a look this summer when I'm in Chicago seeing my brother....Are these areas considered the far south side? thanks again for replying...JJ

Hi John, Actually, I left Chicago in 1952 and moved to Florida. Then in 1975 I was transferred to Atlanta and been here ever since. I was watching this because I always wanted to know how planetary gears work, and how they're used in transmissions. So, I'm watching this and my wife, in another room, heard the man's cadence, his self-confidence, and his obvious expertise with the material. She also picked up enough to know that it was about transmissions. This is a great talk and this man is a fantastic teacher.

I had been studied from 2005 to 2012 years, finished college and university. I have a bachelor's degree and work as a heavy-duty mechanic. In Kazakhstan, all students and teachers don't have opportunities to use this equipment. Corrupt government and degradation of education. So I want to give opportunities for my children to take good education. Very good lesson and teacher!

These videos are extremely helpful. Had I had known about Weber State University before I chose the college I did, I would have made a serious effort to go here. I'm currently in my last semester at Ranken Technical College in ST. Louis, and it has been a terrible waste of money. From the videos of Weber State University, everything here is clean, organized, and labeled. Most importantly the instructor makes a real effort to explain each pieces individual purpose. I don't get any of that at Ranken. Thank you WeberAuto for posting these videos.

It is good to see someone training up the next generation. I made my first repair at age 11 and continued a parallel career in mechanical trades and broadcasting until I decided to go and fly jets. The Allison is a great box. I would like to see their faces when they first look into a Road Ranger, lol.

Very good explanation of planetary gears. I was trying to explaine them to my daughter and I have a PhD in Physics and one in Engineering and your explanation worked. Mine did Not. Nore did a graphical animation as it did NOT cover holding one part of the 3 main parts. You are clearly a pro craftsman and one hell of a teacher or professor. I tip my hat to you good sir.

i have a question sir. 1.) will the planetary gear rotate as i step on the brakes or will it still rotate? 2.) the contact area where the clutch bend clamp down is it rotating at stationary with the brakes apply? if the the area where the clutch bend clamp down is always rotating. means it vry hi wear to the clutch bend. am i correct? hope u can help me out.

When braking, typically the planetary gear sets will stop rotating.

So far, the best tutorial in explaining how an automatic transmission work. The automatic transmission and its inner working was like a black box to me until after seeing this video, everything becomes clear. I have always been pretty mechanical minded, but the workings of the automatic transmission has always been a mystery to me. It is just amazing how simple the principle is and by building multiple clusters, it all works exponentially in its gearing. Brilliant !!!!

Brother, I want to thank you for this excellent edutainment while I work overseas in Kuwait. I’ve commented several times over the years as I work in the sandbox area, but watching your teachings provides me peace and knowledge. Very few people I work with understand or even care about mechanics and your videos produce a solace for my mind. Having lived in Layton when I worked for UPRR prior to contracting to Iraq brings the lesson closer to home. Home is near Poki North of you which is why I wonder how I can attend your classes. Break out the 5th wheel comes to mind. Golf at Hill. I must be tired, back to lessons.

Very good job. Without going into crazy detail you did a very good job of explaining the basics of how the gear system works. Seeing you show the sets actually rotating is worth 1000 words. Breaking a complicated item down into many simple lessons is a great way to teach. If you started going into gear timing and gear ratios it would have been a little overwhelming.

I searched planetary gear operation as I wanted to see an actual on the bench demo of stopping the ring gears for each gear selection. This is a great demonstration the engineer giving it is a excellent teacher and very patient and thorough!

If I had a teacher like you,who taught in details like you do, I would be dismantling and rebuilding gearboxes like a pro but all I got most was the engine. Your teaching skill is absolutely amazing. This takes me back to when i was an apprentice 55 years ago,we were sent down to solihul in the midlands to the rover factory for tuition on the Borg Warner auto trans boxes,and the tutor told us always to fit jaguar clutches if possible to obtain them,his reason was because jaguar fitted GM boxes which were the best in the world at that time and the clutches were of top quality materials and therefore the customer would get a good job well done and value for money, We took his advise and continued to do so until i retired with the rest of us.Anyway congratulations i have enjoyed watching and look forward to more of it in the future Regards J.T

at around 29-30 min the teacher stopped and smiled holding the clutches. this is because hes just brought his whole lecture together to the revelation of how this entire system works. i hope these kids appreciate his teachers wisdom. this is a smart guy, he's been very clear and methodical. this video is a great deal of use to me. thank you very much. its easy too understand, by the way, how these things go together if you have the ability but theres many nuances of assembly and tricks with tooling and such. those things in auto mechanics and other technician work come with experience! ie, on his point of crushing bearings ;) one might not realize they just destroyed a bearing placing a 10 damn pound gear set into place haha

WOW! So many components!, a wonderfully ingenious but complicated way to achieve an automatic transmission. In the U.K. we still retain manual gearboxes on c70% of our cars- they are understandably simpler, cheaper to produce and repair than autos , and only 1 clutch to replace!. However, after c 1.5 MILLION miles covered, mainly in London stop-start traffic, in my 60-year driving career, my left hip wore out from all those clutch-pedal depressions! I thoroughly enjoyed the video, thank you!

Wow an almost 10-year-old video that still keeps on giving. I’m a mathematician and professor, and recently had my automatic transmission blowout. I was uncomfortable with all of the lingo and complicated concepts, and wanted to understand more about the science of how they actually work. I’ve watched lots of videos, but this was exactly what I’ve been looking for. No, I’m not a mechanic, and nobody wants to hire me to work on their transmission, but I do now have both an intellectual as well as a practical understanding of the general basics of how they work now. So thanks!

Then how does it make better fuel economy?"....She is the type that sits in the front of the class, takes tons of notes, asks tons of questions about everything and does mediocre on the test because they spent hours going over whats going to be on the test and doesn't actually understand whats going on.

***** Even worse is the kind that does this and then starts embarrassing themselves and trying to find fault with you for every little thing they can think of because they really are too stupid to understand what is going on, can't face the fact that they really are that stupid, and try to find any and every fault with the instructor as if that is going to get them the score they desire. They don't even try to mentally apply themselves to what is going on but that is the instructor's fault too in their minds. Usually see this with female students and it is truly pathetic. The male students that do this will try to find fault with the instructor as well and after seeing that there is no hole to run into the endzone with in blaming the instructor for them being natural dumbasses; will then proceed to get private tutors and or resort to cheating but tend to have a little bit more self dignity in front of their peers than their female counterparts. We really need to get back to developing true talent when it comes to science and engineering. If you can understand the simplicity and common sense logic of the scientific thought process after being exposed to every teaching technique possible then good on you. If you can't; then there is no shame in that, it's just not something for you. There are other things you may be good at and should try pursuing.

Actually, I bet she is at or near the top of the class. Yes, she comes across as a bit of a know it all, but sometimes smart people have trouble damping their enthusiasm and not showing off. Plus, I bet as a woman she feels she has to work twice as hard to be accepted and recognized. Of course, in reality this is actually working against her because most of the guys will feel threatened that a woman might know more then they do. Hopefully she will figure this out sooner than later. It's seems like she's busting her ass on this course. She even cited the TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) of another vehicle when they were discussing troubleshooting of the clutch paks toward the end of the video. I thought the instructor handled her very well by letting her ask her questions and answering the ones that would be informative for the whole class, but also ignoring her a bit so maybe she gets the hint to stop interrupting quite so often. Great video, btw! I finally understand how an auto tranny works. Seeing the parts working together really helped me understand this easier.

An oldie but a goodie. Thanks Prof. Kelly for continuing to make these videos available for viewing. I am studying transmissions as a hobby and this is the first video I've found that covers both the planetary gear sets and clutches for a geared AT, One thing though is it would be great if you could remove the student's questions and comments that slow down your explanation of the operation. You don't have these interruptions in your newer videos. Not a big deal if you don't but there was one student in particular in this video that talked too much.
