The Route du Rhum is the biggest solo offshore racing event in the world. You only have to walk the dockside at the start venue in St Malo where 138 boats were alongside the quay and it’s clear that this race across the Atlantic is a serious crowd puller. In just under two weeks the race village will see 2 million visitors strolling through a staggering offshore grand prix pit lane.
PlanetSail was there and as part of our Route du Rhum special we talk to some of the key players to find out more about this extraordinary event and the advanced machines that take part in this 3,500 race across the Atlantic to Guadeloupe.
And while the winter may be drawing in up here and the clocks have gone forwards, there's still loads to report on including several new launches and key announcements in the America's Cup.
We've also been boat testing with reports on why Swan's latest launch is also its boldest along with a hands on assessment of the new Excess 15 performance cruising cat.
Plus, we have plenty in Docktalk.
It’s just as well the evenings have got longer.

Thanks for letting us see what's going on in the sailing world! It's a well crafted show and a nice distraction from the -8 degrees we have here in Montreal.

Thanks for again and again delivering great footage, loved the little "wake up!"-face-splash 🤣! Just one thing: I WANT ONE OF THOSE 12 METER AC-TEST-BOATS !!! Damn they look quick, this speed is unreal in boats of a somewhat normal size, really really impressive!

Thanks for a great show, Matt! Thoroughly entertaining and a good format. Who needs printed sailing magazines when we can get up to date and insightful content like this. Exciting to hear how things are stacking up for the Ocean Race. I'm back in Cape Town after living up-country for a long time, and can't wait to see these boats here again. Keep up the great work.

It's a boat designed by gamers turning the joy of sailing into a push-button set of operations keeping the gamer as far as possible away from the elements. Very clinical....with star link one could continue to play video games or watch you're favorite show while crossing an ocean.

This makes me ponder - what is the world record for longest distance sailed entirely on foils without dropping the hull into the water? We have speed records but this is another achievement worth trying. I could see someday someone sailing across the Atlantic entirely on foils. That would likely also achieve a speed record of course! 😉

Its like Star Wars racing on water. But the idea of all the computer control seems to take away from actual sailing. What happens when you have a computer crash?

Don’t the hydraulics on board that operate the foils run off a diesel generator?
@shovington67
@shovington67 Жыл бұрын
@@jasoncrandall , yes they do. I suppose you could use a battery system on a short race duration. I also think the time will come when battery and solar systems will become lightweight enough to cover the deck with solar panels that are able to charge a small battery pack quickly, and pre charge the batteries before the star of the race. If you think about the huge leaps we've taken in solar and battery technology in the last 30 years, I'm sure we'll tackle the issue in the next 10 years. Maybe sooner.
@jasoncrandall
@jasoncrandall Жыл бұрын
@@shovington67 there have been no huge leaps in battery and solar tech in the last 30 years. There’s are only so many electrons in a ray of light. Solar and wind will never compete with hydrocarbons which is why I find it ironic they race sailboats that run on hydrocarbons. They should at least be disclosing how much gas they use and compete over who can use the least. It’s a bizarre contradiction everyone is hiding. For example the never record the sound these sail boat generators make.
@shovington67
@shovington67 Жыл бұрын
@@jasoncrandall the output and makeup of solar panels has grown dramatically, not to mention the perliferation of lithium batteries and new types of storage matrixes that have been discovered. The last 30 years have been instrumental in the battery and solar industries. I dont know what your talking about. Solar panels used to be very delicate, now you can buy flexible solar panels that can be bonded to the topside of a boat and walk on them. The lithium battery alone is so much more stable than 30 years ago, allowing much better reliability. The industry is gigantic now Mr. Crandall.
@jasoncrandall
@jasoncrandall Жыл бұрын
@@shovington67 lithium batteries have 2% the energy density of hydrocarbons. Electricity, solar, batteries etc. we’re around 100 years ago. In my opinion you’re a victim of good marketing. Before you respond Google “energy density”. It’s just math

Somehow seems to more be like a computer game than a sailboat. Not for me.The next "improvement" would probably to run these boats WITHOUT a sailor, just on auto-pilot? It would also be more environmentally friendly since the computer never exhales CO2. Fully ESG compliant. Watch out: "The oceans are scheduled to overflow in 8 years if we don't all go ESG."

As always, respect for the better parts of the video, but Matt here's a C+P from KZfaqs own guidelines. The longer you refrain from disclosing what needs to be disclosed, the more of a hit your journalistic integrity will take. And yes, fanboys, feel free to hate on me. You may not be seeing I am actually doing this out of respect - and because I happen to believe in transparency. Anyways, here we go, from YT's own rules: If your content has a paid product placement, endorsement, or other commercial relationship, you need to tell KZfaq so that we can facilitate disclosures to users. Note that you may have more obligations depending on the laws in your jurisdiction. If you don’t follow those obligations, we may act against your content or account.
@PlanetSailOnline

And that is why we do declare that there is paid for content in the show. We abide by the KZfaq rules and tick the appropriate boxes just as KZfaq say we should. Not trying to hide anything.

@@PlanetSailOnline thanks. I’ve been after you before so apologies from my side. I guess youtube doesn’t add the disclosure to all videos then. I thought they did so when I hadn’t seen it in yours I mistakenly thought it was just that you hadn’t ticked the boxes. Thanks again and sorry if it sounded like I was on a rant.

And increase the ocean state difficulty!!!!!!!! Not all this Electronics! Buy the Skilll the Art the Purity! The Ocean! Stop moving towards the Formula 1 model!!!! GP is likely to go down due to this insanity, and Americas Cup is in Same position!! Make it about the Skill of people sailing not the Programmers!!!!!!
