Layoffs have increased 4-fold in 2023, with more layoffs coming. Tech is leading the pace, but other industries are joining the fray. We are also seeing more companies pushing a return to the office. This leads me to wonder if there's a war on the remote employee. In this video, I break down what's going on in the labor market, what to expect, and how to position yourself to best handle it.
0:00 - the state of the market
4:47 - layoff plans have quadrupled
10:07 - layoffs targeting remote workers
13:40 - what should you do?

The pandemic wasn't unprecedented - just because most folks weren't alive for the last one doesn't mean it didn't happen. There are a lot of similarities to Spanish Flu, including how folks reacted to it - and it was far more deadly. There were unique attributes - like how much more social media, 24-hour news channels, and widespread mis/dis-information.

@@sciencelover3339 This isn’t a bad thing. You should treat your career like “You, Inc.” - build your own personal brand and let your resume be your job security. Look at trends and figure out which jobs/career tracks will be the most rewarding long term and go for that. The old fashioned model of working from college until retirement for the same company died a long time ago - and I think it only existed for a generation or so.

I was most definitely targeted as a remote employee for my layoff in March. In a followup conversation with HR when I was negotiating my severance a few weeks later (people, you need to do this if you are laid off), she all but admitted that the company made a big push to RTO and remotes got shown the door. I had 10 years under my belt, and the only reason I was remote is the company, whose HQ was in another city, did not renew our office lease in the pandemic and reclassified those of us in the area as permanent home based. Permanent, ha. The responses to my job hunt is mostly crickets. It is very hard out there right now. If you are remote and still have your job, Bryan is right- you need to prepare now if you haven't.

I'm pretty sure my name is on a list somewhere because I refuse to RTO. They haven't made it a mandate yet, just "strongly encouraged". I told my managers 2 years ago WFH was the hill I was willing to die on, but apparently they thought I was joking. I am working on my resume because I fully expect to get the call in the coming weeks or months. Though my company is being super shady overall; they never told us layoffs would be happening, or that they are still going on in small batches. I found out from outside reporting a month before it started last year, but they get mad if we bringing up articles from outside the company. They just call the whole thing "reorganization".

Forcing people to go back into the office when it doesn't really make sense (e.g. you go to the office but you really only talk to people over zoom because it's a distributed team) is a big sign that they're looking to have people quit instead of being laid off, especially if they're also cutting how much office space they're going to rent. Meta in particular pays 16 weeks + 2 weeks for every year you've worked there if you're laid off. It's going to be difficult for people who bought a home far away from the office because they expected to be remote for good since these companies were doing well under remote work (and even made record profits/had record productivity), and also for people who have disabilities.

@@Akemaste The 2008 recession was caused by a lot of stupid in the housing and lending market. People blindly assumed their houses would _always_ increase in value (never true). Banks commoditized home loans by turning them into tradable stocks (i.e. conforming mortgages). When folks started defaulting on those mortgages, those stocks tanked. High foreclosures also caused normal sales to plummet. Banks with lots of upside down mortgages were in distress. Government stepped in to bail them out (mistake). I worked in a securities firm before the market crash, so I understood what was going on when most did not. Our current economic situation is very different with lots of interrelated factors - so it is impossible to pinpoint a singular cause like before.

I recently interviewed and was so excited based on the job description / phone interview because the pay was great. There was lots of flexibility and only one day required on site per week! As I get into the interview process, I find out I have to be in the office three days a week and at least one of those days in their headquarters. I receive an offer which is lower than the amount I put on my initial application. I immediately turn that down and receive a counter offer for the exact amount I put on my application. HR said they could go no higher. Oh and I have to provide my own equipment if I work from home. COVID really helped echo decades long convos on fair pay and work life balance. It seems like a lot of companies are desperately clawing back any COVID progress whilst still using those same things to lure in new applicants. It was a totally bait and switch that I wasted hours on. I hate job hunting in 2023. Now I have to politely turn down their offer when I'm pretty annoyed.

After being laid off last January and starting a new job in February, I’m now furloughed from that job and am now CEO’ing my career with a vengeance. I never stopped looking for work after the new job because the job and mostly the commute is frustrating. So I spend my mornings working on builing my freelancer prospects while simultaneously focusing on searching for remote or closer-to-home jobs. My afternoons are devoted to learning new skills via online classes so that my tool chest is fuller no matter where I end up. It’s the kind of stuff we all want to do while in the rat race if only we had the time. I’m blessed that I am (…or was) in a two income home with kids mostly grown and gone. So I still put in a full day Monday through Friday and I get in a bit more sleep and exercise. I’m really determined to keep it this way so I’m extremely motivated.

For the roles that higher management/C-suite wants the employee to come in, I think hybrid or optional hybrid would entice people more than fully on-site with no budging. I think we've now seen that there are fewer roles that absolutely need to be on-site, versus not, ignoring commercial property and other company investments.

For my group, it's only one week (Monday to Friday) a month, but there are others that have a two week requirement now. Nobody is thrilled about it. It's especially aggravating for me because nearly my entire team is located on the other side of the world, so the main reason they want us to come in - in-person collaboration - is nonexistent when I go in. It's like you said though, it's clearly traditional CEO's trying to find some way to get bodies into buildings they're paying a lot of money to rent/own.

LOL - yeah, even before the pandemic, I worked with companies that required me to come into the office just so I could interface with a remote Indian team. Why am I wasting 2 hours of my life for this (commute) when I could be just as effective at home? Remote jobs still exist and I believe they will continue to be available, but perhaps not a given like before. For me, there has to be a compelling reason to go into the office (i.e. top-secret government project in a air-gapped bunker).

CEOs, and I think Musk displays this, assume that what and how they do their work applies to everyone else. If their work is best done in person so is everyone else’s. I couldn’t comply anyway, our official office visit policy requires Covid vaccination. Though I’m in Florida, which forbids vaccination as a condition of employment, should they again require office attendance they could instead try to fire me for violating the office visit policy.

My department has been on 'permanent remote' since 2020, and offices are closed left and right. Last year we had a big layoff wave, and I was supposed to be laid off as well. In the end they decided to keep me (after a manager left and a colleague went on longterm sickleave), as they needed someone to do the work. Since April I am on sickleave due to a burnout, and I am pretty sure my name is on top of the list once a new wave is going to hit us (which I sure is around the corner)... I am the only one on the team who is still there after ten years, everyone else has left and been replaced. It is depressing, really.

From my experience I think a big reason companies want people to return onsite has a lot to do with control. In the office they see you. They tell you when to break how long. A lot of companies have point systems which do more harm than good but serve as a good control mechanism for the company. Employees that don’t have to be onsite to do their job loose money when they have to report to the office. Ex. Wear and tear on your car - Tires, gas, oil changes to name a few… yet raises remain in most cases at what about 3% but then there is usually an increase insurance - there goes that nice big 3% increase. Employees don’t have any power unless there is a union. Strikes and other demonstrations make a lot of sense.

You can communicate perfectly well over a call, especially when discussing technical details, things like body-language aren't necessary at all. Even if you did think it was necessary for some reason, you could get that by doing video calls anyway Companies that are international are already not able to fully take advantage of this anyway, as people in different countries have to use calls to communicate with each other, and that has never been a problem before

A lot of these seem to be related to ventures that went bust (ie the metaverse). Demand is still incredibly strong in most markets and workers are happy to even travel/relocate for work. Companies are cutting back right now to save money in the short term, but will find it costing them more to rehire in the future.

I know most recruiters these days are just trying to score a desperate person with a low-ball offer - I really prefer getting that part out of the way. I normally tell them I'm ready beyond their ability to pay and that I don't know of anyone so desperate they would consider that position. If they aren't completely unreasonable, I just tell them I'm looking for a more senior role.

I've been doing some flavor of "hybrid" for the past 20 years - basically since it was possible. Especially in the past 10 years as the "open office" fad took off - I had to work from home just to get my work done since the office environment was too distracting for a high focus field like software engineering.

The problem with proving your job can be done well remotely is that usually means it can also be outsourced. Several members of my family and friends work for the same company. When they had to go remote it took a while to get everything straightened out. Now that they have the productivity has gone back up and they have shown that their jobs can be done pretty efficiently by remote. They are all concerned that now they have a system in place that works well with remote workers those same jobs will get outsourced. One of them was a middle manager working hybrid. She could see them starting to make moves to eliminate the middle managers and stepped down. Sure enough about six months later they eliminated her former position and that person was laid off.

You are naïve. If they want to outsource to India or Bangladesh they will do anyone and you don't have any power whatsoever. If a company wants to outsource, it will outsource anyway, regardless whether you conlme into the office or work remote. My previous job required us to be at the office for 60 hour weeks, and guess what, eventually all our work got outsourced and we were all let go.
@Troy_Built

@@Bella.Parabellum Not all jobs can be outsourced. It was previously thought that theirs couldn't be. Once all the shutdowns happened they had to figure out how at least some of it could be done from home. At first it was a mess but they were nearly completely shut down. Once they started to open back up they split some of it to in person and some to home. Then they gradually split the jobs differently requiring some full time in person and some only once a week. Now they are trying to make it to where some don't come in at all.

The one point I take issue with is the reduction in productivity from remote workers. Every study I've seen highlights the fact that productivity at worst remains the same and, in many cases, even improves with remote work. Anecdotally, I know that I start earlier, end much later, have way more energy, and get much more done working remotely.

My Wife works at a major bank and letters are going out to remote workers in some units requiring they move to one of 5 city metros to work in the office at least 3 days a week(they'll pay for the move and give a year to move) or take a severance of 2 weeks for every year and stock will be fully vested. The 5 metros are: NYC, Charlotte, St Louis, Minneapolis and SLC. This bank has dumped over 22k people this year. it's caused a lot of sturm und drang waiting for the letter. Supposedly it's coming in January. This is very disruptive. Wife is in her late 50's and I am over 60 now and if this happens, we'd probably do some sort of move, either keeping our current residence and getting a condo in one of those places or not, but it would require I retire a bit earlier from my job than I expected, which means less for me in retirement. These execs need something I can't mention here.

They WANT everyone back in the office. Badly. "We have the office space, so we should use it" is the silliest thing I've heard so far. My supervisor insisted that we really should meet in person at least every two weeks but has only actually attended these meetings seven or eight times since we started this two years ago. It's kind of crazy in my opinion, but I guess some people feel that in-person interactions are important. For me, the various audio/video conferencing options are more than sufficient, but some folks find this insufficient.

I was laid off in early April along with many others, because I was remote. So rather than asking if I would be willing to move to the area or even change positions within the company, I was just let go. I still talk to my former teammates regularly, and they just did a THIRD round of layoffs this past week. And then replacing a lot of those positions with interns or contract employees , or forcing hte work on the remaining teammates. As someone who was working and lived through the '08 recession, this is very similar to what happened then (minus the aspect of remote work). And organizations just can't understand why engagement has progressively trended downwards and burnout has trended up...

Honestly, I love contract work. I was fulltime at a bank being pressured to work more hours at the same salary or face being outsourced - then I realized the guy next to me was getting paid nearly double as a consultant. I took an hourly consulting job. Best decision ever - I worked the same crazy hours but I got paid for it. Folks wonder if I worry about job security - the answer is generally no. If you get paid well enough, you can easily build an emergency fund as long as you don't inflate your standard of living to match your new income. Also, my resume is my job security. The other benefit of consulting/contracting is exposure to many types of technologies and companies in a short period of time since I'm on a new gig every 12 months or so. If I find a client I really enjoy working with, I can consider converting to fulltime. Although, I did have one manager ask me about converting as I was cresting a 60-hour work week. Later in my career, when benefits and a better work/life balance was more important, it was a lot easier to convert to a higher salary for my skillset with the right company.

I think Americans unknowingly built a system that now views employees as a liability instead of an asset. I know this because as a business owner I have employees who constantly call in, do below average work, feel entitled, or who threaten to sue. It’s hard to get rid of bad employees. If I can outsource or contract jobs I’d rather do that as I get a better product and I can cut ties easily.
