PLANNING and TILING the Marble Floor, CHATEAU Bathroom RENOVATION - Journey to the Château, Ep. 123

In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart continue the bathroom renovation in one of their chateau bed and breakfast rooms. Patrick puts down the marble stone mosaic tile flooring in the bathroom, and Tony ‪@notquiteachateaudiy‬ stops by with grandson William to hook the vanity sink up to the plumbing. Patrick and Stuart also make a trip to a large brocante in the medieval town of Hérisson, France with its large 12th century castle.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Hi Patrick & Stuart, I had the same problem with uneven walls in a guest bath I was renovating. I solved the problem by opting for a larger tile, 4 x 6, and a 5-inch border. With a lot of tweaking and patience, the end result was almost as perfect as I imagined. Even in our 1950 mid-century modern, most of the walls are not level or plumb and the house is on a block foundation which shifts as the ground freezes and thaws from winter to summer and back again. Doors stick, cracks in the plaster come and go and the 15 +-year-old "new" windows that the previous owner installed have seal leaks in several of the window sashes. No house is perfect, certainly not ours. Mark & Scott

OMG... Patrick, for a moment I thought you'd run into my sister at the brocante. She would totally pull that. Some people really do feel entitled. I'm glad you prevailed in the end. It's clearly a case of, "You snooze, you lose." When something interests me while shopping, I won't put it down until I have consciously decided that I do not want it. The curtains you have purchased at the brocante are beautiful. I can just picture both of you in stylish justaucorps heading 🐎🐎 for the Fêtes Galantes au château de Versailles. Dear Patrick and Stuart, The bedcover is lovely and you’re accumulating quite a collection of copper. I love the tiny chandelier, I’m so glad it was one of your purchases. The tile floor and sink looks so nice. Those types of brocante’s in medieval villages must be so much fun to visit. I think you need one of those wagons with the giant wheels that people take to the beach to wheel children, beach chairs, umbrellas, fishing poles and so on. You can load it up with your purchases instead of carrying them. Since you lived in America you can understand how difficult it is for Americans to fathom some of the inexpensive prices you pay for these beautiful pieces. I live in a town with many antique shops and the prices are untouchable. Enjoy your weekend!! xx

Dear Stephanie. We love the bedcover. So,pretty and cheerful. And the copper is making the kitchen look even more authentic Having the brocantes in a lovely setting like the last one, is enchanting. I bet the small chandelier would look really nice in a small bathroom, with a dimmer switch. I had one in my very small bathroom and I had a large mirror on one of the walls. It felt luxurious🛁. Patrick your patience with the floor tiling!! It looked great when you finished. The stripey fabric on the back of the quilt and pillow shams is called 'ticking' it is traditional to back your quilts in this fabric as a 'nod' to the days when bed mattresses where covered with ticking fabric. For a long time here ticking fabric was really the only wide backed fabric option for a quilter unless she wanted to piece her back from multi coloured scraps (shudder) but these days there are so many different companies that do wide backs for quilts its rare to see a quilt with ticking as the backing (unless its old or you get a traditionalist like me) The toile fabric looks beautiful and it will be lovely as a light summer quilt. I have made so many over the years, not just for my home but for many friends and family and I use one of my own quilts in the summer as the warmth weight is just right and I get too hot now under a regular doona with (the menopause, the doggie foot warmer and the thermonuclear heater husband) hahahaha!!! I know what you mean about having a break. I've gone back to University this year, because you know, I'm just not busy enough!! and I am now gagging for some sewing time, assignment after assignment wears you down, bit like tiling adjustments and out of line walls I would imagine lol. Keep up the good work.

I was at TJMaxx recently looking at a dress, had one hand on it for a better look, this woman came over and just pick it up at the hanger and walked away with it. Not a word said. I can relate to your story in a way. This woman apparently had looked at the dress earlier, walked away from it and when she saw me looking at it decided she wanted it, just like the person at the Brocante, the minute you picked up the fabric she decided she wanted it.

Wow, that was a big storm. I guess there will be some cleanup after that. Tony, you're a real gem of a friend. Great finds at the brocante. I guess that lady lost out. Too bad for her. Did she think she was at Walmart on black Friday? So rude. Some people have no etiquette or manners. Our air quality is very poor today from the smoke from all of the fires. We had to venture out and buy a new TV. Our 10 year old TV went on the blink. We have to wait until September 7th to get it installed. I would be fine with just my phone and KZfaq. The bed covering and shams are beautiful and if too small for a bed they would look lovely with a simple white covering underneath them. Of course I love all the copper pieces and they are all usable just as they are. The small chandelier will be perfect to pretty-up a small room. You both have a wonderful eye for great bargains. Lastly the sink and tiles are Perfect in the bathroom. ❤

I’m so glad you bought that cute little chandelier. Love your finds. The fabric will be cool in a costume. Stephanie has seen some beautiful ones and so has Vivianne from Château Love and Sarah. The copper is beautiful in condition. Your brocantes are amazing. We don’t have anything like what you have here in the states as you well know…oh my goodness I just love that bed cover and sham set. What a wonderful treasures. Patrick I hope your wrist feels better. All the work you do affects our bodies. Good Saturday morning Patrick & Stuart, This video was amazing! The music is fabulous. I would love to see the musicians playing. Even whilst you were walking around the brocante, I noticed I was keeping in tune with the violins and base and can just imagine the conductor doing his thing. You will never find a straight wall in a ready built house or chateaux or castle. My son says unless you build yourself, it would never happen. Our house was built by British contractors that came here to South Africa, only the Lord knows why they were brought out here. It becomes a sorrowful tale once you get started talking about the construction, the built-in cupboards etc. You just have to correct as much as you can with the renovations, at least the eye rolls over and the new plastering, tiling and so forth, corrects the faults. The chateaux's built all those years ago, the foundation and wall constructions are not too bad. The rest becomes a headache. The brocante was lovely, there were better quality goods on sale, and I loved the fabrics. The small chandelier is so pretty, and the bowl is most desirable. I agree when so involved with the alterations, it is better to change over even for a day, do something else. You have not shared any cooking with us for a while neither Stuart's delicious baking. Perhaps you can make an exception and share something tasty with us. Is there an outside oven on the property, then you can make a gorgeous pizza, nothing like a wood fired pizza. Oh incidentally, why are you wearing a hand brace Patrick, I noticed some time ago on a video and wondered what happened there. Wow, you had British contractors in ZA? Fascinating. Like you said, we are doing all we can to correct almost 400 years of wear and tear. We will soon start cooking and canning again. 😂😂😂. I’m sorry, first things first….. in my head I sing: I am 70 going on 90……. I was out with Tony and we loaded our van up with his building materials….. a ton of it and i walk like Jimmy Carter a few weeks ago 😂😂😂. TnNow, yes indeed, you’ll have the Toile room with the lovely bathroom. The en suite toilet is anothe project 😊. Weekly progress but never quite enough. You are a natural indeed. We are going for 18th century gentlemen’s outfits. Abbé I can get my waist down appropriately. 🤣🥹😲. You two would have a blast. Eventually we will have more rooms and can organise a full costume dinner party. I’m thinking about pink parasols now. I will have one for you….. or at least, I will be trying. ❤. Lovely plate :) put some small pieces of felt between the wire and the porcelain before hanging please...to stop wear... I mend these edges and you can never make them look as good if they are mended.

What a lovely town! The church was beautiful as well. Some great finds for costumes and the copper pieces too. One thing l would enjoy seeing more of is the work, if any, on the gardens and landscaping and what your plans are for these areas. I would love to learn about the Allee and why it's so long. I always love your trips through the countryside with pleasant music to accompany the journey and what great purchases especially the fabrics, which I loved, being a dressmaker in my younger days, I can’t pass a material stall on any market without buying at least a little something. The lady and the cloth reminds me of this….. three of us are behind the deli counter waiting to be served. A fourth guy shows up and starts to order. I said loudly “excuse me I was here before you” and he had the nerve to say “you weren’t here at all”. HUH? Bad part of this is that the other two people weren’t on my side which was really weird. Anyway, of course I ordered before he did! Love all the cloth you got ❤

When I bought the copper dish, I stood there with a big bag between my legs in one hand my wallet and some change in the other and a tiny woman just said “excuse me”……. Twice. She expected me to make space so she could walk between me and the table……. I stared at her and finally said: No, I don’t excuse you! 😂😂😂. The woman who was the seller laughed out loud and said she loved me. 😂❤😂. Can’t make this up. 😅. She must have been related to your deli jerk 🤣😂🤣. Sending you love to NYC. 😊

Thank goodness you sorted tile out on a crooked floor. May I suggest that you purchase a pull along trolley cart for Brocants because 9/10 you buy something 😅 .. I knew you spotted the sm Chandelier. The panels are gorgeous, copper 3 euros wow , 😍 😅😅 good for holding ground , you snooze you loose 😅😅 oh my the bedspread is absolutely gorgeous, love it .. maybe king size

Hello Patrick and Stuart, quelle belle brocante à Hérisson je ne connaissais pas j'ai regardé c'est dans le département de l'Allier. De belles trouvailles... Le petit lustre à pampilles est magnifique, les pièces de tissus pour le prix incroyable !!! vive la chaleur 👍 ça a dû faire baisser les prix 😀 Il me semble que l'une des taies d'oreiller et la dernière grande pièce en tissus (certainement un couvre lit ou jetée de lit) sont en boutis provençaux. La melonnière en Gien renaissance est superbe aussi. j'ai aperçu pas mal de Gien sur la brocante il y avait aussi un beau plat à cake en renaissance mais de style plus bleu. Moi j'adore la pivoine de Gien. Bon en tout cas vous allez pouvoir cuisiner avec ces beaux ustensiles de cuisine en cuivre 😉Même juste en décoration c'est superbe.

Good choice to go with small tiles on such a floor. ♥️ What great finds on your trip! I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of costumes you will create. I’m glad that you’re giving yourself time off to do different creative things. ♥️♥️♥️ There’s a similar place (well, a farm town in the Midwest, but similar in terms of parking) that becomes a massive antique market for one weekend each summer. Enterprising kids pull wagons around the grounds offering to haul things for weary shoppers, or sell beverages from coolers. The bigger kids have bigger wagons and will haul furniture. 😁 I’ve also seen shoppers buy antique wagons, and always wonder whether they wanted the wagon, or wanted to lighten their load. 🤣 I’ve also seen shoppers there that have wheeled carts that start out as backpacks. Perhaps you can find or make something similar for next time you go there. ♥️

Nice brocante finds. Congrats. My best brocante find was last summer; an entire set of vintage Le Creuset cookware in bright orange -- I bought the entire set for 5€. Yes, that's five euros! Even better is that I can use it on my induction cooktop. Cheers gents-

Some great finds at the brocante. We went toview a country auction today, bidding tomorrow so hope we are as successful as you were. There were some amazing lots to see, we suspected they came from a diplomats house as there were some stunning monumental Chinese artefacts (2 large jade horses standing about 1.5 metres high, enormous temple ornaments and large altar tables, lots of porcelain), a large pietro duro centre table, Russian art including 3 large portraits of Lenin, lots of oriental rugs. It must have come from some sort of stately home to have accommodated it all. We are not bidding on that😂 but it was fascinating to view.
