Planning for the 2024 Sailing Season - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

Acorn To Arabella

Күн бұрын

Charting a course for the upcoming sailing season, Steve reveals the route he and Robin hope to complete that will take them to the shores of Nova Scotia and to the bases of some seriously huge and remote climbing walls shooting into the sky right out of the bay.
Steve also gives a short update on his mom's cancer treatment: thanks so much for all of the well wishes and kind comments that have been coming his way during a difficult time.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Oh, gosh! Hearing what your mom is going through. My wife has gone through the same procedures. I’m 81 now and watching you build Arabella has been my secret escape from the stress of watching her suffer. I truly hope your mom can live as pain free as possible.

another great route you could go, is once you get to the bottom of cape Breton, is go through the locks at St Peter's, sail up through the Bras d'or lakes, and stop in to Baddeck and up out the top of the lakes to head north to NFLD after that. it is Beautiful trough there!!

Not a climbing Adventure but stopping into the Fortress of Louisbourg would be amazing. It takes a National Historical site and has been restored to its original glory. All the park employees are roll players. It is very much an original 16th century sea port.

If you get as far as Cape Breton and decide on NFLD, go through the St Peters canal (one lock, free passage) and make your way through the Bras D'Or lakes to Sydney and use it to jump off to the south coast of NFLD. Many marinas and sheltered harbours on the NS coast all the way up to CB. South coast of NF has many fjords and steep bays, see Grey River and Hare Bay, and Francoise. (pronounced Fransway). Might as well see Saint Pierre while you're at it, which is French.

Greetings Steve. I'm glad your mom will stil be around for a while. I was raised in Nova Scotia and have been watching your channel since the beginning. I've spent a considerable amount of time working on boats whether it being inshore fishing, diver tender and scallop dranging on 65 footers. I see you have your track planned along the southern coast of N.S. I can highly recommend stopping in Lunenburg. It has a natural harbour and may be a good choice for resupply. It's just one of the many beautiful small towns along the coast. It is also the home port of the Bluenose 2. The original Blunose was a championship fishing and racing gaff rig schooner.

Steve If you go to newfoundland consider going to the far east coast of St Johns to the high banks off the shores of newfoundland there are stunning rocks that you can climb off the shores of that area. I've been there myself I was raised in newfoundland as a kid and lived there in St Johns for a couple years. left in 2001 moved back to Ontario. Which is central Canada. Hope your mom survives this battle Steve Lifting her up in our prayers God bless.

If you make it to NS, be sure to transit thru the Bras D'Or Lakes, Canada's Inland Sea. Baddeck is home to the Alexander Graham Bell museum, don't miss it. It would be easy to spend a week in the lakes. St Peters Canada from the south and the lakes are open to the Atlantic in the north. Hope it all works out well... Bon voyage...

Very best wishes for your mom and the rest of your family. It's a tough thing and while the stakes are worse for your mom, everyone suffers with her in their own way. Been there. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the Arabella build from day one. I watch a few other builds and it's very interesting to go back to certain parts of the Arabella build and compare solutions to other builds. Yours hold up very well in comparison. Frankly, I have less than zero interest in climbing, possibly even less than that, so I'll part company, but wish you and your family well and I know you will enjoy your adventures.

I'm in Halifax. You'll want to stop in Lunenburg along the south shore of Nova Scotia. Resupply can happen in Halifax as a good place to stop. Sydney in Cape Breton to take off toward Newfoundland. Then you either go to the west coast, or (I'd do it this way) go south of it all and shape a course directly for St John's going south about "The Rock". If you're planning to be in Halifax, do let us all know. There are a number of people who would love to see Arabella. There are a few clubs along the waterfront in Halifax too. Armdale yacht club is where we keep our boat. RNSYS is closer to the mouth of Northwest arm so in that respect easier to get to.

steve as far as routes go up the coast isnt a bad one ...easy on the navigation , but all things considered i think straight to nfld and then back down the coast may be the better option for your mom with the worst over at the beginning as well as the most remote then coming back into more populated and serviced areas. worth a think i believe . thanks for the videos looking forward to the captain getting orders from the master lol

Hey, Since you are passing by my neck of the woods I figured I'd let you know about some interesting spot along that path. Digby NS, Historic place and one of the first settlements in north America, nice protected harbour with a great view. Yarmouth NS, Nice place to stop by with amazing food, another protected harbour. Lunenburg NS, Another historic town with lots of life and even better food. Lots of sailors stop by here on their way up and down the coast. Halifax NS, Capital of the region, You can find a bit of everything in this port city, if you needed to fly back, you could do it from here. Canso NS, Small town semi protected. Great place to decide where to head next. From here you kinda have 3 paths: Path 1, Along the Cape Breton coast, for stops along here I would recommend St-Peters and Louisbourg and its fortress then on to Sydney before crossing to Newfoundland. Path 2, Take the St-Peters Canal and cross the island using the lakes, you end up in Sydney again. Path 3, Take the Canso Causeway and go up to Prince Edward Island, Along that path you can easily stop in Charlottown, Summerside, Pictou, Richiboucto and Shediac. This path will keep you pretty close to some major airports and into some very warm waters. From there you could reach the magdalen islands or keep going up to Quebec. Also if you do head to Newfoundland, make a quick stop to the St-piere and Miquelon island to visit the tiniest piece of France. Take care and best wishes to your mum.

Hi Steve, Sending positive vibes to you and your family! I’m from New Brunswick and thought I’d pass along my 2c for that leg of your trip. I grew up in a town called St Andrews which is a stone’s throw away from the United States border. I’d highly recommend making a stop there - I believe the town’s wharf may also serve as a point of entry into Canada. Some noteworthy attractions in the area: - St Croix Island (first landing site of French colonization to North America - note this island is in US waters between NB and Maine). - Kingsbrae Gardens - The Algonquin Hotel (the hotel that inspired Steven King’s "The Shining" novel) - Minister’s Island (the summer home of Sir William Van Horne, the Canadian Pacific Railroad president. I used to work here!) I also would recommend checking out these other places up the bay of Fundy: - Saint John, NB (not to be confused with 'St. John’s' Newfoundland ☺️) - St Martin, NB (might wanna check out their Sea Caves!) - Alma, NB (located at the foot of Fundy National Park, amazing views and lots of hiking trails). - Hopewell Rocks Hope this is helpful. I also would highly recommend spending some time both in Cape Breton (NS) and Prince Edward Island!

Don't miss spending a few days in Mahone Bay, NS. Home of quaint towns Lunenburg ( home of the famous and recently rebuilt Bluenose II schooner), Mahone Bay, and Chester (home of Chester Race week). 365 Islands in Mahone Bay so lots to explore and lots of beaches and protected anchorages. Some other youtubers have passed it by in a hurry to get to Halifax or Cape Breton and have missed the boat, IMHO.... it is a sailing meca. Avg days are 15 to 20 kts in the afternoons, typically SW winds.

Dear Anne, Robin, Steve and all others who worked with Arabella, It’s z hard to make plans for a long journey when one of your dearest relatives is temporary in a stable condition with regard to a serious illness. Willeke and I therefore wish Strve a lot of strength with regard to his mother's health. Everyone will fully understand that Arabella will be moved closer to his mother's home and that long distance trips with Arabella will be postponed for the time being. Willeke and I know this out of our own experiences. We look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands

Hello Dick! Happy Friday to you and Willeke. I was just thinking of you the other day. It’s so hard sometimes with chronic or long-term illness to live in a state of constant emergency, potentially putting your life on hold for what could be (hopefully but almost tragically) a long time. Approaching carefully and with a big heart and lots of communication between all the family members is how all of this is going. Imagine if she’s well enough to do a little regional flight to Lunenburg and see Bluenose II and The Big Boat Shed? For each person, these experiences are so different and difficult. Sending ❤️ from Lamoine, Maine! Oh, did you see this? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qc9zhrmgss3eZHk.htmlsi=milotIekL-zMW4Sv 😊 -Anne

There are so many beautiful stops along the way of your planned trip and deciding which ones to pursue will be difficult, but.....if I may suggest.....lol, firstly, you can clear Canadian Customs in Head Harbour (great place, especially if you want to get out of the weather) on Campobello Island, Canada. This will save you going into Saint John, NB. If you do decide to clear at Saint John then you may seriously consider going up the Saint John River (written up in SAIL mag years ago as one of the two most beautiful inland waterways in NA, the other being the Mississippi). You will have to co-ordinate your passage into the system through the Reversing Falls due to the tide and current. I can offer lots of info on the Saint John River system if you choose. Many responders have suggested that if you reach Cape Breton, then you should check out the Bra d'Or Lakes. I concur, as they are premier cruising grounds. On your way up the Maine Coast, Roque Island is a keeper!! Awesome trip you have planned, Fair Winds Sailor!!

Wow. There are some odd overlaps here. Your boat was launched in Mattapoisett. Mine was built there. Your going to a family members dock in Pocasset. My boat was sitting on stands in a guys yard right near Barlows Landing in Pocasset for about 15 years before I saved her and brought her out here to Eastham. Like you, I'll be sailing north, not south when I'm done with the boat. I hate the tropics. Small world... Hopefully, I'll catch you guys in Harwich before you head northward. Best wishes to your mom. Cancer sucks. I've lost several family members to various forms of it.

It's incredibly beautiful with the streams frozen in mid splash, also don't forget your crampons. Along with your ice ax, your going to need it. I wish i could see Tuckerman's ravine and the alpine gardens AGAIN. The forestry has a couple of shelters half way up to rest and put on more clothes and take off the wet ones you'll have, and when you turn around you see the rest of the mountain. WOW I wish i could go with you but that's not going to happen ,so enjoy yourselves ,it's one of the greatest things i did when i was young. send pictures, lot of them. bye

If you come to Nova Scotia, I recommend you check out Mahone Bay and Halifax. When you go to Newfoundland, I recommend you go to Gros Morne national park and then head North to L'Anse Aux Meadows and the land of the icebergs!

If you ever get out to the left coast we've got a thousand miles of coastland north of San Francisco where there are few, friendly, small towns along the coast and lots of mountains that come straight down to the water. The Pacific has big waves and virtually no sheltering coastal islands though, so it's kind of a difficult place to find a safe harbor in a pinch.

Steve, I am a bit jealous! That is going to be an incredible trip while I am headed back to the hard to do more boat work. Hope you have a fantastic season and that your mom's health holds out.

Acadia is a great place to cruise. On your way north, take a look at Grand Manan.

If you end up coming to PEI and you want a few days off of the boat, my wife and I have a guest cottage that you're more than welcome to.

Hopefully all goes as planned. Im from New Brunswick and have watched since the keel pour. Saint John is a nice city but if you'd like to visit a nice costal town Id suggest going to St. Andrews for your CBSA check in.

Can’t agree more. St. Andrews is right on the Canadian / US boarder, a nice harbour and beautiful historic town. An excellent boarder entry point. From there your next option is Saint John or across the Bay of Fundy to Digby. If you head to Saint John, head up the harbour to cross into the Saint John River at the Reversing Falls and head over to the Royal Kenebekasas Yacht Club, where I’m sure you’ll be welcomed with open arms. There’s spectacular sailing on the river as well if you have the time, otherwise you can cross the ‘falls’ again and head to Nova Scotia. As I’m sure you know, the Bay of Fundy has the worlds highest tides and the Reversing Falls is a quaint name they call the entrance into the river when the current falls 10’ in each direction depending on whether the tides are in ebb or flow. Timing is essential to make it across at slack or you’ll be a wreck. Can wait to follow along. All the best to your Mom ❤!
