Have you ever heard of a Fetiform Teratoma? I think that’s what the deformed lamb was. It’s extra cells that form a non living mass that can even have hair, bones and limbs. They’re usually so small you don’t notice them. Super weird looking things but pretty interesting. Haha

A tumor with random cells that can have elements of: hair, muscle, and. It's a germ cell tumor and can be malignant or benign. Can grow near sacrum near tailbone, ovary's, testes. It was the baby lambs evil twin...can grow off the blood supply of the lamb.

I love being able to watch all of this! It can feel like you are going through your journey alone (well for me anyway) but when I sit down and watch all of this, it is motivating and inspiring all at once and the fact that we get to see all of the good and not so good, the successes and failures, it makes me feel not quite so hopeless when things are not going right. So much love and keep it coming!

Sandi, just wondering, when you scan, some of the ewes are a little jumpy probably more so with ewe lambs. Have you ever thought about adding a short section of alleyway in front of the scanning box so there is always a ewe standing in front of the ewe that is getting scanned? I used to scan a lot of ewes and that is how we did it, but the alley system was designed that way. The ewes seemed to be calmer in the scanning area if they have one of their buddies standing in front of them.

Could you speak about what you do with the lambs from here? I know nothing about sheep, so I am wondering all sorts of things, like: how long do you raise the lambs for; are they to be sold on at market; are any for meat; do you keep some to breed with; are any for wool; how long is a breeding sheep kept; how many lambs on average will a breeding sheep have over a lifetime. Thank you so much for these videos, you are inspiring.

Thanks for the feed calculations, never saw it in writing before, 95% pregs! Wow! I thought you had trips and quads from AI, I have about 40 girls and 18 newbies, but never have any more than doubles (don't really like bottle feeding except on one older ewe, my bottle baby just had her own baby, nice...), what do you attribute the trips and quads to? Really like to see the variety of the videos, what you do to get from point A to point B, thank you!
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim... I would say genetics likely plays a big role, that mixed with good nutrition. But, you'll see that they aren't quite this prolific out of season. So although the last group that was bred in season had many multiples, this particular group bred in January had many more singles scanned... The April and July breeding groups will also likely have way less multiples.. so I think seasonality also plays a huge role.

Hi Sandy Sorry , but I have a question: What is your income number per month for your business? I have a farm with 90 ewes and I’m losing money after 2 years of working in such business! I buy the feed and I have a worker in the farm ! Does it worth for you please?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
Great question... So, our biggest cost savings each year is our growing our own feed... and really is the reason we expanded the flock to 450+ from 150 ewes in 2013. Even switching over a couple years ago on the lamb finishing side from a fully prepared pellet to our now corn/supplement ration has again reduced a huge cost. Is there anyway you can integrate a pasture system to your farm? That could ease up on labour, and most definitely help with feed costs... As for losing money... We've lost enough over the first 3 years for sure. I knew nothing about sheep, market prices were awful, health issues with the purchased stock... the list seemed endless. But as I worked on developing systems and working with my vet and feed guy, we've turned it around and finally in the black (after 7 years). We are fortunate to also run a large grain farm that most definitely subsidized the sheep those first few years.

@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Amy... I'm so sorry they died. And often its the things we don't see... Like, did they get enough colostrum those first hours of life... That I'm afraid is likely the biggest reason we lose lambs "for no reason". We think they are drinking, but we really don't know if they are getting enough... and that is quite frankly the foundation for a healthy lamb.

do you butcher a lamb or 3 for your own eating, or ship everyone,, in other words do you eat your own product? i think many would like to see the diferent cuts and what you can make from others, i worked in that area in my 20's

Do you house your sheep all year round? 🇬🇧
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
I do... we have a heavy population of coyotes just outside the facility which makes me leery of pasturing them... I think perhaps in the future, we will look at integrated it in after lots of educating myself in outdoor management!
