At first glance, plant and animal cells have a lot in common: they’re both highly organized, keep their DNA tucked away in an envelope, and are kinda juicy inside. But plant cells have evolved some wild features that set them apart from animal cells. In this episode of Crash Course Botany, we’ll ask: are plants more than the sum of their cells?

Mitochondria are sooooo much more interesting than many talk about, that old phrase included. Evidence points to them having been a separate cellular organism in the past that was "eaten" by the original big cell. But the mitochondria cell ended up not being digested, formed a symbiotic relationship instead, and the rest is history. Mitochondria certainly aren't independent anymore, but they still have their own DNA, which is with them instead of being inside the main cell's nucleus. Chloroplasts are in the same boat. I don't get why this isn't talked about more. I think it's so cool!

Plants are amazing! They can do so many wonderful things and how we humans are connected to plants in so many ways that scientists are still discovering them. My favorite plant is the skeleton flower because when it rains the flower becomes transparent. I wonder what happens inside the plant to cause it to become transparent?

Sorry, no. Auxins are small organic molecules whereas most hormones found in the lymph nodes (interleukins etc.) are peptides - basically small proteins. If anything, auxins have a very slight similarity to some neurotransmitters.
