About 5 years ago, I planted a light purple and dark purple next to each other. The next year (and every year after) I had hardly any light purple and a lot of the dark. I never knew why. Now I do! Thanks!!!

Been growing clematis plants now for over 10 years, I’ve grown them in every home I’ve lived in, I think they are beautiful and brilliant solutions for saving the bees because their floral is so attractive. I find in Ireland where I am that potting a clematis for the first 2-3 years and then plant into ground only once roots are really strong have I not had a wilt yet since using this method for the past 6 years.

I am obsessed with clematis. I buying mine from supermarkets UK. I got 2 a "pilau" &" ville de Lyon" paid £1.89 each. Going to cut back and take cuttings before planting. I love them in small pots as I can plant them in small spaces. I also had "Amber" that flourished for 3 years. Thought I had lost, a few days ago I noticed it popping up. Love all this valuable advice. ❤

I have a climatis in a large clay pot. Which seems to heat up the soil. I have put an umbrella in the pot to shade it. The lower leaves on the Vine are dried out. But on top, there is nice new growth. I think shading the pot has helped it. I'm in CA zone 9b.

Lovely and useful information, here in Scotland growing in clay I don't add any compost but plant them a couple of inches deeper than they were in the pots and being near decidious trees there is a layer of fallen leaves which keeps the soil from freezing during long winters and they condition the soil,making it a bit more open. They've lasted for over 20yrs here and still flower for months, it would be nice to try out clematis in pots here but maybe with long,cold winters they'd struggle...in a cold climate with short summers they seem to do best growing up trees and shrubs with natural support. I'm rushing out to garden inbetween hail,snow and rain showers heh,still the clematis thrive as I mainly go for species and reliable doers,they do seem to struggle a bit when it's unusually hot and dry

I tend to treat them the same way as tough shrub roses, having clay soil means a high nutrient content which really holds on to water,meaning sometimes these nutrients can be washed away so that's when it's handy to plant them around other trees and shrubs which soak up that rainfall,here clematis look a bit precious but they're actually long lived,tough perennials which will give you posh flowers even in the worst weather!

Thanks for this very timely video! I have two bareroot starts I purchased and an *unnamed* big box store specifically to try them out without spending a fortune. My desire is to have them climb up and through a large leather-leaf viburnum that was pruned too severely leaving a gaping hole in its front side. These tips and instructions are exactly what I need to get brave. I've heard the rabbits like them.... does your experience support that? If so, I'll be protecting them! :-) Have a great day!

My 38 year old son hates my vines and uses a string trimmer and cuts them off at the ground. We live in a northern climate and provide winter interest. It makes me so mad that i lock the shed. This is 35' of cedar pickets next to the sidewalk. One on the corner gets lots of sun and grow 7-8' tall. Shocked, I separated a still rooted vine, dug a 2-3" trench along the fence and covered them with 4-5 inches of garden soil. Grass clippings & leaves are tilled until the ground freezes. 10-10-10 from the shrub area of a home improvement store help a lot. Since "Phosphates" are made illegal in lawn fertilizer, it is all I can get and works.

I have a hot pink clematis like you showed near the beginning of the video. I planted it on an obelisk and over 3 years it has gone crazy and now it overgrown. Can I trim this to control shape ? Or do I have to find a bigger obelisk. When should I trim it too? In summer after blooming or in fall ? I moved to a new state and I’ve had luck growing them here in my last state they acted like an annual

Often , when the plants goes dormant, and loses its leaves, people will chop the long growth off. Here in Southern California, I find that just leaving the plant alone during our mild winters, allows it to get a head start in spring ( no need to regrow from the ground up) I keep the roots cool by planting the Clematis in the sun, in large planters with succulents & geraniums .

I had a question i have a section of my front yard that gets almost no sun just ambient light i was planning to stick the clematis there. I figured it would grow up the wall to reach for the sun. With that said is there a vine that would grow well in almost complete shade?

I've had so many clematis I've planted, die either shortly after planting, or, the next year, they come up fine, but after a foot or two, they sudden.y stop growing, then die.☹ Yet, 8" away, another clematis grows fine! VERY frustrating!! I find them, incredibly finicky, and sensitive, and out of 5 planted in generally the same area, only 1 has survived more than 2 years. I'll be shopping for a new 1 this weekend, to replace one planted last spring that bloomed, came back this spring, grew 12", then died.🤦‍♂️

My autumn white clematis died back to the ground and the pink one didn’t look much better. I have used oak leaves and there are oaks and cedars everywhere. I thought if lilacs like alkaline soil that maybe clematis do also and added lime. They are taking off.

I have a Clematis that I dug up from my mother's yard in Nevada. I brought it home to northwestern Oregon. It sat in the pot on my front porch for about 3 months and I decided that I had better get it planted before winter. This Spring it is doing fantastic! It is growing up a trellis in front of my house and it seems very happy!

The only problem is that they tend to have deeper roots and are planted deeper - so when transplanting - dig a little deeper. They transplant easily.

@Gardenfundamentals1
@Gardenfundamentals1 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the hardiness of the clematis. Many are hardy in zone 5, but not all. In a pot - the zone needs to be 1 to 1.5 zones colder than your normal growing zone. So if in zone 5, you want a zone 4 or even a zone 3 plant.

Those mesh bags are great to seed plants in. But they destroy the root system when you try to take the plant out of them. Definitely false advertising about being compostable. I have also tried to grow plants around the base of my clematis and they just didn’t like it. So now it’s only top dressing with compost and some mulch. I tried fertilizing with specific clematis fertilizer and it destroyed my plant. Each year thereafter the plant would start out vigorously and end up with grossly yellowed leaves.

@jocelynmallory3412
@jocelynmallory3412 2 ай бұрын
@@blackgown7485 Unless I'm missing something, I did not hear that the plant has to be planted in a hole bigger than the plant pot that it came in and I listened to the beginning several times. What I heard was about the plant being planted a couple of inches (or a bit lower) lower than it was in the pot it came in. I interpreted that to mean that the plant can be planted with the crown buried lower than the level of the soil it came in and the speaker discussed this quite a bit. I asked the question or mentioned about the planting hole because most growers/vendors tell you to dig a huge hole, 2ft deep and at least 18 inches deep which is a lot of work, and is it really necessary. They also tell you to amend the soil quite a bit so if this speaker recommends using the native soil without amending it except for adding compost to the bottom of the hole,, is he also recommending that you don't need to dig a huge hole as well? I have a number of clematis and think I'm going to just dig a hole that is twice as big as the pot. I'll monitor for a year or two after I do so and I think it's probably fine to do that.
