Hi, plant family! As I was watering my sansevieria and pothos, I noticed some brown spots on the leaves. Turns out, I have fungus! In this video, I explain what causes the fungus, what to look out for, and how to treat it!

I have white fungus on my indoor palm plants, all quite expensive. I’m in a desert, so don’t know why it’s a problem on the dry heat. It’s killing them. I’m glad to try your method. Love mother in law’s tongue, aka snakeplant. That’s a nice one. Mix of the two varieties.

My only question is, does the soil need to be changed out? Do the roots need to be treated too? Is spraying (drenching) the leaves enough since it will drip into the soil?

Super helpful! I got a sansiveria about 3 weeks ago now and within a couple days I had 2 brown spots show up. I have been treating with rubbing alcohol but after hearing that the fungus will thrive in cooler temps.. I think that was my biggest mistake. My bedroom gets very little light (reason why I got the plant in the first place) and now we have our window AC unit in there for the hot temps.. I have now went from 2 nickle sized spots to 4 spots... (2 spots are very small) the rubbing alcohol seems to be helping but I have moved my plant out to my front porch so it can get the morning sun.. I am hoping that will help dry out the fungus.. I didn't want to try to cut the leaves off.. since the plant only has 2 leaves to begin with... maybe I will try to just cut the circles out instead.. now the down side I now need to find a new indoor location for the plant once it gets to come back inside. (bedroom was the best choice as I have lots of cats and they tend to destroy any plants I have around... but they aren't allowed in my bedroom..so that's my safe spot.. but it gets very very little light..)

@@WanderingWhittles So, I ended up leaving my snake plant outside for a good while but we had a horrible heat wave (115 degrees for a week) so I brought it inside. The spots never fully went away so I took a clean exacto-knife and cut them out. It doesn't look pretty BUT I do have a huge new leaf that is taller than the other 2 leaves and the fungus never came back! My plant now lives in my living room and is doing really well. Also since my comment I acquired a massively overgrown sansiveria cluster (the pot was so full that it was deforming) that I successfully separated into 3 separate groups. They are also doing very well.

So ,I can use rubbing alcohol? I got a 10in black coral snake. It was nice and healthy BUT it did have a rotten leaf when I got it. I took it out ,repotted ( rot system was AWESOME) so I actually am in the process of trying to propagate that leaf now. It's been 2 wks( not rotting ,in water and looks good so far 🤞) but as for the rest of the plant ,it had 1 small spot. Now I have several. I'm scared to death. I don't wanna lose this beauty:( I'm new at this and have quite a collection. Do u think rubbing alcohol would work ,then just cut around the bad spot? I just realized this comment is year old🤦 but if you're available,lol. I'd be interested in your opinion since your plant survived 🙂 Ty...

@@somerking7040 My snake is alive and healthy has new growth as well.. (my plant collection has now exploded into over 100 plants since I got my snake too..) the rubbing alcohol ended up not being enough to keep the initial spots from getting worse. The only thing that worked in the end was taking a sterile Xacto-knife and cutting out the unhealthy tissue.. but i made sure to cut a small perimeter of the healthy tissue just in case the infection was more than I could see. Unfortunately.. the leaves have very odd square holes in them still BUT the spots never returned. My snake also bounces back and forth between my front porch (where it is right now for summer) and my laundry room or living room.. (which ever is getting the best light in the off seasons). She has pushed out 4 new leaves this year alone since spring. I also transplanted her back then into a very chunky well draining mix to keep any excess moisture off her roots.

I'm a newbie plant owner and bought a snake plant from a local shop last Saturday. I had no clue what I was looking for, but Sylvie (the plant) was already in a pot and had nice tall blades. I thought no big deal it has a few spots. After I get home and do some more research, turns out there are splits running through some of the blades and for sure fungus. The store wouldn't do an exchange, and honestly, I don't want to give up on Sylvie just yet. Almost every single blade is affected. Before applying Neem oil, do I need to prune them back, or only prune back the blades with the most damage?

Wow ! Beautiful Sansevieria with bright and glossy leaves. What's the secret of the healthy plant. Any tips, I live in Zone 5.
@WanderingWhittles
@WanderingWhittles 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you! Sansevierias are my favorite genus of houseplants! A couple tips...they like well-draining soil. They don't like to be wet or have wet feet. Mine do best in normal potting soil with perlite. The perlite adds aeration. As for light, you will get more growth if they get more light. However, I don't recommend putting them in direct sun, as they will get burnt. At least in my experience, they have burned. As for watering needs, it truly depends on how much light it is getting. The more light, the more energy used, the more growth. This all requires more water. 💦 Inside, I water mine about every 3-4 weeks. And lastly, now is the time to fertilize! Water-soluble fertilizer is a game-changer.

Hi! I need help! My snake plant has a brown spot (tiny) on the inside of one of the leaves and there are some that are starting on the edges. For the ones on the edges do I just trim that part that looks brown? And what about the one with the spot that is more to the inside of the leaf?
@WanderingWhittles
@WanderingWhittles 3 жыл бұрын
For the edges, I would trim off the brown. With the other one, I would probably prune it to get rid of the brown spot. Be sure the clean your shears/scissors after every cut! And then treat with neem oil.
@cheskantonio

Hi!! How do u cut the leaves with fungus? Do you cut the entire leaf (cutting its tip) or do you cut it according to the shape of the fungus? Like only the brown edges?
@WanderingWhittles
@WanderingWhittles 3 жыл бұрын
You can actually cut the leak either way -- it just depends on how badly infected the leaf is. If you were able to catch it in time, you may be able to get away with just cutting a circle. Other leaves may require a chop! Make sure you disinfect you scissors/pruners after every cut.

Hi 😌 ,When applying the oil ,you say to let it drip ,does that mean it's safe to get in the actual dirt that it's potted in? Also, I can propagate (I'm new plant owner lol) just about anything and I do great at that BUT once I report my plants they seem to struggle. And everytime I have to pull them out and save them . They have all survived ( except my golden haundii snake) . What do u think I'm doing wrong? I was over watering but I have a water meter now ,a water schedule. I think I'm fine there now. I use terra Cotta pots + succulent/ cacti soil from miracle grow and I have happy frog & Hoffman's. I even add pebbles to prevent root rot. Peroxide treatments. I mean ,I literally think I've studied every plant.. could I be planting to tight? Oh ,and I bottom water now too! I don't over fertilize. I have grow lights + bay window & deck for 🌞. I've wondered if it's my house...Idk ,I'm losing sleep wondering what it is that I could be doing wrong. Now my 3ft coral snake ( that I just repotted ) has spots on it...I do use a fan ,just to make sure they aren't sitting with no circulation.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you:).....Good day.

I think you can dilute neem with other oils. I have a mix with vitamin oils in that may be more suited. I guess you can spray on one leaf to try. It can be used as a preventive measure however I would try not to rely on that rather I would try to get those environmental factors right that are causing problems. Neem is naturally occurring and organic but it's not really how a plant would handle these issues on it's own.
