I quickly learnt to buy plants for the space and environment you live in rather than trying to create the best environment for the plant which usually ends in a disaster. When I speak to new plant parents that's the first advice I give them.

I went through a period where my mental health was severely suffering. As a result, I became exceptionally overwhelmed by my plants and their care and really pulled back to the bare minimum to keep myself alive. My plants suffered badly as a result and I found the guilt of this to be incredible. It's taken a lot of EFFORT to bounce back and I'm finally starting to see the return in care showing in my plants. The new growth and successes in my plants made it so much easier and exciting again. It's like my mental health was mirrored in my plants. I'm still finding ways to show myself patience and grace, and working on creating a healthy separation between my plant health and my own. This is a huge thing and I'm grateful to see it talked about more and more within the community. Thanks, Kat ❤️

Hi I’m just coming out of this funk! No plant died , but they didn’t look happy . I took care of them yesterday , watering cleaning leaves etc. it took the entire day because I take each one to the sink , but I will try to water them where they . The plant community says I’m wearing myself out! Thank you so much for making this video! I felt sooo, guilty and couldn’t relax . I have had plants all my life because of my mom . I loved your question about why I love plants . For me , it’s the beauty , grace of what God makes for us to enjoy ! Plants bring me peace and joy just watching them do there thing ! They are a miracle ! All this rambling may sound corny , but your video helped me answer the question for myself . And thank you again ! A real eye opener ! Gotta say that I appreciate this video. Getting into plants was really exciting, and I jumped into it getting different kinds of plants. But it really is a trial and error, and it can get a bit frustrating. I'd buy a plant that I thought looked cool, but then you have it for a bit and reality sets in. It doesn't look the way it supposed to, because you're watering too much or too little or simply because you don't have the proper environment for it (sunlight, humidity, etc). Multiply that by all the new plants, and you're suddenly overwhelmed, and it's not fun any more. It's taken a little while for me to realize that I just don't want to deal with humidifiers, moss poles and grow light set ups. I'm still tempted (don't get me wrong), but I know it's a fruitless journey and can finally stop myself for the most part. I've learned that I'm a hoya guy. There is enough variety in color, shapes, size, etc that I can stick to those plants. I'm in CA, so I have a good everyday environment where hoyas aren't fussy, and I don't have to do much more than water every 10-14 days. I think I'm finally in a good spot, but getting here was certainly frustrating and sometimes overwhelming. I would think that most people go through this, so thank you for talking about it.

I did a couple things to make sure that my collection didn't become a burden.. 1) I have moved a lot of my succulents outside because it was becoming visually overwhelming to have them in my kitchen (they're fine in my climate and honestly like it better :D ) 2) I'm only bringing plants in that I have wanted for a long while so I don't have to continue to care for impulse plants. At 70-ish plants, I'm content with my collection. 3) I'm re-homing props and plants I no longer want. 4) I save a lot of plant care for the weekends/days off. Yes, I love them and they are important to me, but I brought them in my space to be a support for me, not to take over my life. They can't get in the way of caring for myself or others. If they do, that's a symptom of a larger problem.

Fast forward to the present and yes I have those days I don’t want to do anything with plants. I still love them but feel so tired now due to returning to work that I don’t have the xtra time to give my plants. So I dedicate some time on the weekend and catch up on what needs to be done. To me succulents are a heck of a lot of work cause they attract pests constantly and are super difficult and delicate to clean up. Every month I have to give each of them a treatment with neem oil, and it exhausting. Never had plants dying on me except for that type, and believe me, I’m not replacing a single one of them. I have a strict “no new succulents” rule in my home, Lol. I had a bunch at first cause everyone kept saying they’re easy, but nothing farther from the truth. Sansevierias and zz plants are definitely much better, but it is also boring (for me) to have only that type of plants. A middle point is where is at 🙃

So I only acquire a couple of plants each year. Around 4, so I have about 25 ish plants now, if you count propagations. This makes it more relaxed and keeps the collection smaller and manageable. So I wake up in the morning, make my breakfast (take my antidepressants, take your meds kids!), and then I go around and see if any plant needs anything. For the weekend I plan the bigger stuff like reporting something or rehabbing a plant that needs it. Recently I started taking care of my moms syngonium and I noticed it was insanely root bound to the point it was eating the nursery pot. It was also left in the burning hot sun and got scorched. Doing it like that, having a small collection makes sure I have time for everything and I don’t spend hours each day working on them. It becomes more of a meditative experience rather than a stressful one. Most of what I have to do is change out the water on my propagations and bottom water my plants. Recently I noticed one of my plants was doing pretty poorly due to the intense but indirect sun it was getting, so I moved it. Simple things like that is what I have to do. One task a day. Very chill. I recommend this to anyone who is feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you have some planty friends that can take over some of your plants from you and when you’re back up for it they could give you some cuttings. Idk if this helped at all. But maybe for those who are just starting to be plant parents. Plants are fun but you will overwhelm yourself if you buy too many at once. Just get one at a time, isolate them from your other plants, let them acclimate, and after a month or two you could get another plant and learn what kind of care they need, get to know them and what makes them feel happiest.

@@GoodandPlanty don’t get me wrong, I would love to have a huge collection one day. But this is what fits my space right now and fits my lifestyle and I think that’s one of the most important things for people to consider before starting to grow their collection. Also I like watching channels like planterina who have a huge collection so I can live vicariously and enjoy all the different types of plants 😂

@@miracudrag lolololol I would, but I still live with my parents due to covid and they have pretty strict rules. Like one plant goes in then one plant has to go out. I just trick them by propagating and then giving away propagations so I can get myself a new plant 😂😂😂😂

I have 60 plants right now and I’m feeling so overwhelmed! There are a few plants who are dying, so that’s one of the reasons I guess. Another reason is that we live in a small house and I absolutely love seasonal decorating. But there are so many plants everywhere that I actually don’t know where we’re gonna put the Christmas tree(for example…) 🤯

I’ve had my bedroom plants for like 3 years now but they’ve recently developed gnats/ I think mealybugs on the leaves?? I’ve had 0 problems until now. I think it’s because I brought in new plants that were infested. I HATE bugs and the idea of spending months trying to get rid of them is making me spiral. I think I’m going to rehome them and only have real plants in the kitchen.

A very important thing not everyone wants to accept is that our homes do not suit every plant. For example if you live in an apartment that has small/not so many windows the light that you get is very little and so you’ll be forced to use windowsills in the summer and grow lights in the winter, BUT also you MUST choose low-light tolerant plants if you can’t meet these requirements or you’ll be frustrated 24/7. Also, don’t expect to not have crispy tips on a plant that is prone to and also you water with tap water while living in a city whose average humidity is 20%. For your plants to look like the Instagram ones you need to fulfill their needs 100% and that’s a thing that many of us simply can’t provide. After all we’re forcing them to live under certain conditions which are not natural… do we humans prefer the sun or any artificial lights to do our human stuff? I’m sure that it’s much more difficult to reach 100 plants in your collection if you choose plants based on the conditions you have.

Timely, I am kinda of tired of caring for my plants and the cost of maintaining- they’ve grown so much in the heat and humidity of the weather in south Texas. Many of my plants need a second repot since spring.

Hey! I really need help. I am dealing with fungus gnats for the past few months and currently with trips too. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m a poor student living in a studio so I don’t have the money to buy expensive stuff and I can’t quarantine sick plants. Caring for my plants and seeing them grow really gave me joy, but now being at home and seeing my plants only stresses me out. I watched several videos about how to get rid of them but it seems impossible for me. Please help me😱

So sorry you’re dealing with this. I also live in a small space and remain vigilant about pests. I have a small collection and battled thrips earlier this year and recently fungus gnats. For thrips the best solution was Bonide systemic granules. Currently @$10 on Amazon. Follow instructions exactly and treat plants every 2-3 months. For fungus gnats, an inexpensive solution is to layer topsoil and the bottom of planter with sand. The larvae can’t develop into adults and the existing adults can’t lay eggs in the soil, so the life cycle is broken and they die out in a few days. I got the sand for $5 on Amazon. Hope this helps. Be patient and good luck with your studies!

@@smy250 Thank you so much for your reaction! I will buy sand to deal with the fungus gnats. The problem is that I live in the Netherlands and the Bonide systemic granules are (currently) not available where I live. Do you have another remedy or do you know the working ingredient in the product so I can look for something similar?

I treat my plants almost like I treat my cats and my kids: Give them the basic necessities especially those that they cant get by themselves. Then check if they're in a good place to grow and develop. That they're safe. And then leave them to live their lives.

It is complex, however the answer is simple. If you have too many plants to manage get rid of some of them. Sell, give away and bla, bla, bla........:) Most plant enthusiasts do have a lot of plants. Enjoy....:)

If you think of your plants as pets you will not treat them like a hobby as easy or at least feel horrible when you neglect them. However some people do treat pets like a hobby and neglect them as soon as they get bored. Which is horrible btw and shows a lot about the person
