I did everything I could to help this Split Leaf Philodendron (short of taking it home) at a random AirBnB. What it needed was more light, a deeper pot, and more frequent watering. Sadly I could not provide all of these, but there was a happy ending to the story nonetheless.
This is E1 of House Plant Rescue as I have saved many house plants in the past and am sure I will be rescuing many more plants in the future.
I am no taxonomist, but this plant is NOT a Monstera (Monstera Deliciosa, Swiss Cheese plant, etc), though I do think the care needs for this plant are basically the same. Instead, this is a Split Leaf Philodendron. While the two names are often confused synonymously, the typical Monstera Deliciosa has smoother leaves, inner fenestrations, and is a climber. This plant instead has less smooth leaves, no inner fenestrations, and older plants will grow short trunks. ALSO, I think this "Split Leaf Philodendron" has recently been determined to have unique genetics which make NOT a Philodendron. Instead, I have heard that it is now in a different genus 'thaumatophyllum' while maintaining the bipinnatifidum species name. If you have more or better information please share.

I just saw one at Lowes today and am going back to get one tomorrow! Gallon size for $15! One of my absolute favorites!💚🌴🌵🌿☘🪴 thank you for saving this guy!

They feel very exotic and also sort of... old? Like they could have been growing millions of years ago. I need to get myself one soon. Nice! That does seem like a good price.

@@teatimewithja I just got it! Very healthy and absolutely stunning! I was honestly afraid they would all be gone! And they really do have a "jurassic" type vibe! 🪴☘🌿🌵🌴💚

I've been keeping this plant as a houseplant for the past 35 years. It's commonly known as a Philodendron selloum (aka P. bipinnatifidum). The leaves that turn yellow are the lowest on the stem and the oldest. As they die back the plant forms a trunk. As you say, its care is the same as Monstera. The plant in this video looks as though it's been transplanted from elsewhere into a small pot. It looks too healthy to have flourished so well in such cramped conditions.

Thanks for the input! I always like learning from people who have decades of experience with a specific species or variety. Agreed - the original root ball on this made it look like it was previously in a much taller pot. Overall, it did look fairly healthy but could have used a bit more light, space, and water. I now have an affinity for this variety and would love to get one myself eventually.
