Would like some info from young man who is active in voodoo religion. Many years ago while in new Orleans my family and I encountered someone we later saw online called "the chicken man".Has anyone ever heard of him.we had an interesting experience involving him.

I think if more people talked about history the way these 2 do, we as a nation would be better off. It’s accurate, honest, it can make you uncomfortable, but it also shows that we can all be united in moving forward. Slavery isn’t unique to the US, the vast majority of human kind comes from people who were slaves at some point in history. Slavery exists today as well, in 2024. We all would be better off having a full understanding of how it affects the minds of people today.

This is so interesting. Plantations are often romanticized so Robi's perspective is an incredibly important cultural aspect of history that is usually glossed over or hidden. Thank you both.

Unbelievable that some people first think, "Wow, such beautiful trees and plantations" and to me, I can only think of the pain and suffering that is entombed within those grounds. The horror that those trees have experienced 😩 Robi, thank you and your family for always teaching the true history of these locations. 🙏

WE see your virtue signaling. Trees, fields, and brick and mortar structures are inanimate objects and are not guilty of the sin of slavery. That would be humans. Those people have been long gone. So stop attacking the innocent. You would not say the same thing about the White House. It was built with slave labor.

The plantations are still beautiful, though. Sure, there was pain and suffering, but that does't exist there now. We should be able to appreciate the beauty that it there today as well as learn from the past.

Yes, those oak trees have seen a dark time in US history. They also saw how humans have changed, evolved and tried to do better.

The “focus on the furniture” shaaaaade. So very necessary though! I visited Oak Alley yesterday (escorting friends who have never been exposed to plantations) and we couldn’t believe all the carousing going on while people were touring through the slavery exhibit. Abominable. Thank you, Robi and Andrew for keeping it real.

I agree. Be awesome to have a NEW TRADITION.A yellow and black tie affair to raise funds for educating the public on slavery - like Seattle has a SUGAR TAX so they can educate people on the harm of sugar. Seriously, we should educate people on the HARM OF HATE. Many blessings

I imagine they hold weddings, events, etc to raise money to run these places. Admissions and gift shop revenues probably are not enough revenue each year. Like it or not, they are historical sites. Much history there, much of it sad. They should all be upfront about the lives of the slaves there. I went to Oak Alley in 2003 and enjoyed it because I like historic sites, birthplaces, cemetaries etc.

I loved this video and I loved that you guys actually focused on telling real history. I went to a planation tour the first time I went to NOLA and the guide never mentioned enslaved people. She talked about the furniture and the rooms and the how happy the family was when they lived there. I asked about the daily duties of an enslaved person and the guide got mad. She didn't want to acknowledge them at all. I was upset and frustrated at that, so thank you for this I feel my anger was validated and I am not the only one who feels that way. Thank you for this wonderful video

It’s insane to me that this is still the case. But it’s only been 160 years since the Civil War and that’s really a tiny amount of time in historical terms, so I guess it makes sense that there is still so much racism and denial.

Isn't it ironic that a lot of this nonsense is still happening today. Just look at what the Republican Party is doing, trying to whitewash history by banning books and forbidding teachers to tell the truth about the ugly history of this country. It's the same script different cast. If you ask Republicans or some white people about slavery, or how black people were treated in this country, they get mad and deflect and tend to want to change the subject. But the voices of the past will not be silenced. They will continue to speak even if some refuse to hear.

Whitney Plantation refuses to do events/weddings. I read that Laura did them in the past but was making an effort to phase them out. Our tour guide from Laura did talk about the architecture and the family but she also talked about how each family member abused or interacted with the slaves. She also split it in half between the house and the slave quarters so it was well rounded but Whitney was still my favorite. They are the only two I could find that aren't advertising weddings. I would like to go to more of these plantations but I'm not spending my money on a business that allows people to celebrate on grounds that enslaved people were tortured on, when their masters also danced and celebrated as they were being tortured. It's tone deaf.

I've been to this area and toured many times.... I am FASCINATED by these two presenters and their INCREDIBLE talent for telling the history. I have learned more from these video presentations than I ever did by in-person tours. You guys are treasures! Robi and Andrew need to be hosting T.V. documentaries for PBS! You present things in a way that is beyond fascinating. THANK YOU!

A couple of years back we visited Whitney Plantation. Having family who came to the Edgard area after the Grand Derangement (1757) I was particularly interested in the history of the area. Our guide was extraordinary - he was brutally honest about slavery which made some of our group uncomfortable; one couple denounced it all as fake news and left the tour. I think they probably would have been happier at Oak Alley. This place is the real deal - throw away your preconceptions of the life at Tara and be ready for your heart to be, well, broken.

A lot of non-Black people always love the romanticism of slavery, but NOT the actual atrocious behaviors that our grandparents and parents told us about. They speak about the grounds/plantations as if the slave owner built the buildings or worked the grounds. The slaves did ALL the work. And if it hadn't been for them nothing would have been made or done. Thank you Robi for your insight.

Robi I don't know you but you are one heck of a super guy. I am 75 and my family was farmers. I grew up picking cotton along side my parents, siblings and many that had family that came from slaves. I loved listening to their stories and got me hooked on history. My parents taught me as a young child that we are all God's children and we came from the same "Father". Andrew thank you too. Thank you for bringing us part two of the Magical Mystery Tour! I love it. I am so excited that there are so many incredible things to see within driving distance of NOLA. Last year I learned that the Laura Plantation was also the site where an author came to record the folk tales that the enslaved people were telling, and that's where the Brer Rabbit stories came from. They were Senegalese, I think. (Didn't mean to open up a whole other can of peas.) I am very interested in the plantation that focuses on slavery and the stories those people had to tell. I knew about Anne Rice and Oak Alley. So very much more than that to see. And now we will look for random oak trees. xoxo

I’m white and my partner of 23 years is black and even after being with him for all these wonderful years I will NEVER know what it’s like being black in America. Robi, thank you so much for enlightening us on the live oaks that are in a circle. You and Andrew are so knowledgeable that it’s stunning and incredible at the same time, thank you both. I will say that we travel to a lot of cities and New Orleans is where my partner is most comfortable and said he feels most connected. We are so thankful to you guys.

Loved your review of the plantations and giving us the real scoop on what they talk about. The furniture talk would infuriateme. I went to a re- enactment one place and needed a box of tissues. I did not know about the ring of oak trees. I learn so much from your channel.

It’s interesting to know that some of the plantations “focus on the families that lived there” while shying away from the subject of slavery knowing that those families did not flourish without slavery.

Just got back from first ever visit to NOLA. What a great place. So much history and things to do. Visited the Oak Alley Plantation. Amazing place. The house was Louis’ house in Interview from a Vampire. Got to stand in the doorway where Brad Pitt carry’s out the slave woman before the house is burned. That however pales I’m comparison to what you feel when you hear the accounts of the slaves who lived on the property. Such a moving place.

Iived down the road from oak alley, in hahnville, louisiana, always wanted to see the inside of it. Its beautiful! If you went from new orleans to there, you drove toght by my apartment i lived in. .i would love to go back and visit those places !! When i was in higjt school, my dad , sister aand i went to oak alley one day. He parked, and he stepped over that little wrougjt iron frnce, it wasnt long until a guard came out and said we couldnt wonder atound the property. So, i never got to go back. This happened back in 73.

I worked in Jackson La for 9 months as a travel nurse and stayed at saint Francisville. I visited myrtles, rose down, Afton garden, Oakley, and a place with a lot of peacocks lol (forgot the name). I love saint Francisville. I’ve noticed a lot in people in Saint Francis and Jackson rarely visit New Orleans or even know a lot about it and vice versa so this is interesting. I love all your videos. Wish I had watched them before I came down. Thanks for Sharing all your knowledge.

@@matthewwhitaker6403I have seen your virtue signaling. It is not sugar coat. It is a fact. They are historic museums. You act as if a museum is guilty of slavery. A brick and mortor structure is not the guilty party. I'm a professional historian and I don't understand the modern attack on historians and historic places. History isnt politcially correct. It is what it is. If a historic site talks about slavery then you people accuse historians of "gloryfing" slavery. If a historic site does not talk about slavery enough you accuse them of "white washing history". I read a review where someone at one historic site said "They don't show you chains, they are whitewashing history" Then I knew a site that did display chains. What was the comment then? "That display is "insensitive". You can't have it both ways. The people that are guilty of the sin of slavery are long dead. Stop attacking innocent historians and historic musuems. We are only storytellers. So shooting the messnegers.

Excellent info. Louisiana Digital Library and American Building Survey online have historical interior pics of many of these plantations and their exterior buildings from the 1920’s and 1930’s too.

These are fantastic tours. You guys have done an excellent job! I have wanted to visit these plantations and always wondered about how "sugar coated/sanitized" the tours were, since unfortunately many parts of American history are hard to hear and accept for some. I have family history in Louisiana that I have recently discovered and it has blown my head off of my shoulders. I want to know more. I don't want to be lied to. I want the full, raw account of how things went down when I go to visit historic sites, not revisionist accounts. I am surprised there's not a more organized road trip around visiting all of these plantations. There's no collective approach to delivering this history to the public. How unfortunate. America needs to see and hear this part of our history. It would make us better as a country. Understanding and compassion would be the byproducts of a visit to these plantations.
