A lot of the driftwood I use is either Malaysian Driftwood, mopani, or Manzanita. I also have a few tanks with locally sourced hardwoods, You can usually find some relatively reasonably priced stuff on Facebook marketplace, One thing you want to make sure of though is you're not using any softwood or pine.

Great info in here. I've used other substrates and dirted tanks in the past only to lead to frustration and algae issues because of excess nutrients. I would argue, gravel and dosing ferts as necessary is probably the easiest way to go.

I don't like the way the blasting sand does with the food I feed my fish, it makes it always look dirty & I don't like that, so pea gravel & algae eaters for me.

The majority of aquario plants are easy and doesn’t need special soil, except red and grass plants. But plants like Cabomba, crypto, anubias, java mose and all the stem plantes (vallisneria, cabomba, etc) do roots only to keep themselves placed and not drift away. They take nutrient via their leaves.

@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't hurt to have more depth, one thing to watch for if you add more gravel the bacteria that is in your substrate will get buried and have less flow so you may experience some bacterial die off and get a bloom to colonize the new gravel so just keep an eye for any ammonia spikes

Hey there, thanks for all of the information it is super helpful and I love seeing the roots at the bottom of your tank! I do have a question though. If you are starting a brand new tank and treating it with water conditioner. Do you wait to add your plants at the same time you will be adding a few fish? I just got a 40 breeder and am curious how long I should wait...really want to start the tank out right.

You can add plants when you first set the tank up, dechlorinators work extremely fast so the chlorine won't affect your plants. Live plants will help boost your cycle so you can add them as early as you would like.

I'm always worried about the waste/gunk being too much and making the water toxic, especially as it accumulates below wood and decorations. The more planted my tank is, the harder I find it is to lift solid items and vaccum the gravel without messing everything up. Any info on how thorough I need to be or not be. I feel like I can't gage properly but not being able to clean the gravel seems to make my fish sick. I've had finrot on my betta and ich on my other fish friends that live with my betta. I don't find any other cause than water quality due to too much gunk releasing dangerous fish harming stuff. Meanwhile you seem to not stress about vaccuming the gravel. Any info is so welcome. PS love your channel and approach to fish keeping.
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
As far as water changes I just try to keep nitrate under 40 ppm, any and all waste will eventually break down to a form that will either be caught by your filtration or utilized by plants. Whether the gunk accumulates on the bottom or in your filter it's still in the system physically, And essentially it eventually all breaks down into nitrate anyway. So as long as you keep up with your water changes The tank will be healthy

Ok for a while but if you want a self sustaining aquarium with little to none water changes then a dirted substrate ( potting soil, or aquasoil.) Capped with sand ( gravel trappes dirt , sand lets it filter through and locks it in for plant roots to use as food ) .add some local pond water for a cocktail of micro organisms for a echosystem.

Your welcome, i dont have a prefered gravel type if i use gravel, my favorite substrate is black diamond blasting sand from tractor supply. Once the bacterial colonies are established in the aquarium from the nitrogen cycle, there will not be any ammonia at all with or without water changes as tge bacteria will break down the ammonia to nitrite then nitrate very quickly

Am considering a dirted tank for my next one, but now you have me thinking. Not sure I want to deal with all the potential drama of algae blooms and filthy water. Question: did you wait many months for the mulm to develop before planting your tank? Or did you just put your plants in and give them fertilizer? Thanks and wish me luck. Your tanks look awesome, btw.

Thank you, I started off with root tabs and liquid ferts and that was enough to start them off, afterwards I just rely on the mulm

Hi! Just want to give you an update. I decided to go with a dirted substrate and black gravel cap and it totally worked. I just took my time. I have a few Java fern sitting on some wood and will get some plants on Monday. I’m glad I gave it a try. Although, the proof will be whether the plants live or die! Btw, sifting the soil is a major pita….lol.

It is but the results of a planted dirted tank speak for themselves, I think you'll be happy with what you'll have in about 2 months 😁

Just out of curiosity, if you do have issues and need to vacuum the gravel, is there a way to safely do so without stressing or killing plants/root damage?
@TrafishAquatics

Not really, you would just vaccume the areas that didnt have many plants

I am starting a new tank which clearly doesn’t have mulm in it yet. The tank will only ever have a beta in it. Will Anubis and Java fern survive in the tank while the mulm builds up? Is there something I should do to help the plants in the meantime? Thank you so much!

Any organic matter will break down into ammonia, but if there's no plants around there it will be ok

Pretty much, all the mulm in the gravel will feed the plants and they'll be healthy too. If you want to vacuum in the areas with no plants you can if you would like to.
