This is a brief video of what my favorite substrate is for my planted tanks! I have had nothing but amazing results with Fluval Stratum. It is an amazing product and every single plant I put into it just goes nuts! This substrate easily will last you a very long time if you dose your water column with a all in one liquid fertilizer! I like to use the NilocG fertilizer and the Seachem Comprehensive fertilizer.
If you have never had a planted tank before I strongly suggest you use a aquasoil because it will make your job a heck of a lot easier. You just put the plants in it and give them some decent lighting and they will thrive! If you are new here please Join this community that I am trying to build! I want this channel to be a place where Planted Tank Aquarists can come and learn and ask questions if they are having issues and have the community engage in helping people. Hello. Very beautiful tank! I have just purchased fluval stratum for my new set up. Can I put the fluval as a first layer on the bottom and cover it with a gravel? What would be the difference (between covering the substrate and not) if possible? Also, do I have to cycle it first, taking into account that I will use my canister filter directly from my old tank in the new set up. Any advise will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Otter Creek Aquatics I think it’s much better than eco complete but eco-complete is a better long term option. Also eco complete says on the bag that it raises your ph. I don’t like that! 🤜🤛

Otter Creek Aquatics I’m pretty sure it’s because of the liquid fertilizer that they soak it in. It says on the back of the bag that it raises ph. I’m pretty sure that’s what killed all of my tiger barbs.

I'll just have to try some aqua soil one day. For now tho I'll have to make due with the little bit of eco complete and black diamond blasting sand that I could afford. Thanks for sharing and as always...Do what you do if it works for you.

For some reason KZfaq held your comment for review. Eco-Complete is hands down my favorite for long term tanks or budget tanks. You never have to change it and it only gets more nutrient rich the longer you use it. A lot of people don't realize that. I was about to get some for my 29 but I didn't trust it with my cory cats. Thanks for the love brother!

It's a great cheap option if you can do it successfully but I've tried it three time snow and still can't seem to get it right. I've been really wanting to try it out on my 20 long but I'm afraid it isn't going to work. I always get cyano every time. I have no clue why! :(

Oh really? Thats good to know!! I was going to put that as my substrate in my 25 gallon but probably wouldn’t be a good idea for my first planted tank lol I can see it failing lol

Dude! Are you using co2? I'm so jealous of your tank. Is that dwarf hair grass? Its roots are so perfect and deep. I'm about to start a plant tank with Stratum and I've read every thing I can about it. So I want to ask you. Some people said its hard to plant it because its so light they had a really hard time getting the plants to stay down in it. Was it like that for you? And the directions say to rinse it lightly. Some people said it caused major dust in their tanks that lasted days. Some said they did not rinse at all but poured water over really lightly and got no dust at all. How was it for you? Did you rinse it and did you get dust? What kind of ferts do you use? And have you heard of liquid co2? Have you ever used it?

Like the video man, do you have any experience with the finnex stingray? I'm about to setup a 5.5 gallon planted tank for my betta and I'm just curious if the stingray will be enough for it.

Aqua Soil is still my favorite if I have the money but dirt is epic when you are on a budget!

Have you kept neocaridina on Fluval Stratum? Are you using remineralized RO water or tap water?

I wouldn't stress about it to much. It pretty much buffers your water to a level your tropical fish and plants will love. It won't hurt anything to give it a try. ✌🙂

Yo if you really want high CEC substrate just go with Kitty litter. Or I use API Pond media. Those two are the highest CEC I found

I've actually used kitty litter already and it is just way to light. It turned to almost a powder. Didn't really grow much either so I took it down and bought some aquasoil. It is just the best in terms of results in my case. ✌🙏

Have you ever used mr. aqua aquasoil? I hear it’s similar to ada but less ammonia. 8L is 40$ on amazon I’m seriously considering 🤔

If you are located in the U.S. You should really try UNS Controsoil! It's awesome and a little heavy than other soils so you can plant it pretty easy without floaters and it has a super low ammonia release as well! But I have heard good things about the Mr. Aqua Aquasoil. I heard it is a lot less dusty as well! ✌🙂

The Planted Tank I will definitely check that out I have another small tank to set up I may grab a bag of that aswell. I want to eventually do some side by side substrate testing. I went a head and ordered the mr. aqua soil. I’ll definitely let you know how it goes it’s got a lot of good reviews. if you are interested it’s only 40$ for 8 L definitely one of the cheapest options.

Can you use Eco Complete as a filler then the Fluval on top?

Man if I had a dollar for everytime I've been asked this question haha. By doing that you defeat the purpose of what eco-complete is supposed to do. Which is capture and trap waste for the bacteria it comes with to break down so your plants can consume it. I would either just use eco-conplete or just us aquasoil. They both work great but I always get better growth with aquasoil and it doesnt raise my ph like eco complete dose. It also says that on the back of the bag. I hope that helps answer your question. ✌🙂

@@ThePlantedTankTV but, for curiosity sake... what if you did the left half of you tank with eco and the right half with aqua? Or in cutting board rows side by side, instead of top and bottom. I wonder how that would affect the water?

Question my man. I’ve watched some of your other videos on substrate. Which would you recommend more for a beginner 10/20 gal, eco-complete, Aquasoil, or flourite? I’m looking to do a low tech tank with similar plants

The More You Grow to be completely honest my opinions have been changing more and more over the last few months and I believe aquasoil to be the best. I haven’t had a successful dirted tank yet so I can’t really say which is better. But aquasoil gives me such amazing growth. This tank is so dense and I’ve never used co2 in this tank so it’s definitely possible to get really lush growth with aquasoil. It is more expensive but for good reason. Thanks man! 😍✌️

Makes sense! So aquasoil is essentially clay based and has nutrients added where as eco-complete is kind of like lava rock with no nutrients but has high CEC/nutrient absorption and pore space for beneficial bacteria? I’m asking here because if you look online the sites selling you the products tell you you’ll need like 15 substrate products. I’m just trying to find what I need for the best success in a low tech planted aquarium without getting tons of extra stuff lol

The More You Grow okay here is the issue I have with eco complete because I have a love hate relationship with it haha. With aquasoil it gives you a high nutrient content right from the start. With eco complete your plant roots would mainly feed off of root tabs at first and then fish waste. But in my experience it can take a while for it to build up enough fish poo for your plants to eat. For me it is usually about 6 months until I start to see really hardcore growth. But aquasoil also hold fish pop so it does the same thing but with a lot of nutrients from start to finnish. But it doesn’t last forever but eco complete does! So it’s really depending on how long you want to keep your tank for. Sorry for such a long comment I hope that made sense haha 😍✌️

Timothy Dawn I have some in my 29 gallon that is a year old now and isn’t showing any signs over breaking down. Some people have some that is five years old! I’ll link to that video later! ✌️🙂
