If you lay out a tarp to dump your soil on, it makes clean-up much easier, and you lose less soil into the grass. Great video! Thanks!

Thanks for helping me figure this out. Other videos have stated two trees are needed for pollination. My father's side are Hoosiers, and wow, my kinfolks' home cooking with all that good stuff from their gardens was incredible!

@OurLittleHomestead 7 жыл бұрын
Some trees do require two trees for pollination. This particular Cherry tree did not need two...but we did have another one about 20' away; we had rabbits eat the bark off our other trees and lost several in the new part of the orchard. Pears are the most hardy and easiest to start.

I just saw your video on this Cherry sapling and I had no idea that Lowes sold them or that they were so inexpensive. so I talked to my wife and we are going to plant three in our back yard for the bees and hummingbirds as well as all the other critters that visit us back there and to eat them too if everyone else leaves us some to eat. Great video and by the way I hope to see it grow too cause I'm 73.

I've had NO luck at all with a "Romeo" Cherry tree I purchased. 1st year, the tree died so I got a replacement on warranty last year (summer 2018), they let me keep the original, as there was still one branch that was still alive. They didn't have a single "Romeo", but for $30.00 more I purchased 3 Cherry trees in one pot: "Romeo" "Juliette" and "Crimson Passion" cherry tree. Planted these all last summer, all grew, BUT not the "Romeo". Something about the "Romeo" that doesn't want to live (much like the novel Romeo & Juliette...lol). Anyway today, the "Romeo" tree, broke from the root, so I guess that one is toast yet again. Ironically, the very 1st Romeo I replanted, and seems is full of leaves and perhaps someday will bear fruit. I don't really know, because the leaves don't look like the other Cherry trees, but it's hard to tell. I will keep it planted till I give up on it, but for now it "appears" very promising. Any ideas as to why Romeo doesn't do well?

The tall cherry tree once stood there, I remember it in winter, covered by snow. Branches like cold arms reaching out yearning for Summer. In Spring, I watched its pink blossom, light as paper, rise, then fall again, to embrace clinging, wet, grass. Bats flew around it during warm evenings, searching for insects. Leaves covered the garden in Autumn, leaves that had once greedily extracted light for photosynthesis and absorbed signals, so my television froze. On the day it was to be cut down, I wondered if it somehow knew and I felt quite sad, I’m sure if it had a choice it would have wanted to live. Arborists crawled over its branches like ants, slowly eviscerating. Asking how I could stop it re-growing I was told to place bleach (like acid) on the grooves they cut into the stump. The neighbours commented what a good job they had done. It never grew again.

Great, and it needs to be Zone 4 hardy . . . live and learn, I guess. BTW, you have the nicest soil I've ever seen. Up here we have nice Lake Superior Red Clay.

The ppl that bought our house five years ago, said they cut down 3 of the back yard trees. I believe that was one of them. Once you sell, you have no say, for sure! I have had two of my four cherry trees make it here on the farm though. Cherry trees for me are hard to get going. Very few around these parts of central Indiana. I did get peaches for the first year and second year for pears. First year for apples as well. Plus we have a 60 tree orchard down the lane. I made over 200 pints of applebutters last year and sold all but 30 jars. It paid for my garden seed and my landscape mulch this spring. Plan on making peach jam this year. I give 10% of fruit to ppl in need.

Taken in a tornado a few years back, planted a redbud there instead, it's thriving. We lost a peach tree and one plum tree as well. I was lucky it only broke a few greenhouse panels. I planted new cherry trees on farm last year, more apples, peaches, pears, plums...bigger orchard; 6 apple trees. PLUS there is a huge apple tree beside my land where no one lives anymore. It had bucketfuls last fall! Oh- that wonderful smell of fresh fruit off the trees! There is also a huge apple and cherry tree orchards just down the road from my farm. The guy mows it, but does let anyone pick. Shame watching it all fall to the ground in times like these! :(
