I learned to plant potatoes from my grandmother who was taught by her Scots-Irish grandfather, whose family left Ireland in the wake of the potato famine (which killed over a million people). Potatoes became a food staple for Ireland’s poor tenant farmers because you could get high yields out of a small area. So you could feed your family healthily out of a small plot. Unfortunately, people came to rely on potatoes so much it was completely devastating when the blight hit in the 1840s and the majority of the population was left with no food. Ireland’s population before the famine was 5 million. After, it was approximately 3. Approximately 1 million people left the country to escape the devastation and seek opportunities abroad. Consequently, there are more people of Irish descent outside of Ireland than actually live in the country today. One of those immigrant families was the Kennedys, who of course produced a President of the United States. So the simple potato had a tremendous impact on history.

It was nice to see the inside of the flower shed, but I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking “That orchard area is looking fluffy”. We never got a spring bloom update?!

Laura when you snapped off that red bloom I laughed and thought well without pulling the bulb we will see this same scene next year when it appears again 😂😂

I appreciate your teaching style in this video! I consider myself an intermediate-ish gardener, but I would have LOVED this as a beginner gardener. It’s just nice to know how many more gardeners are learning from you (and motivating all of us) to join this gardening community! Gardeners are some of the chillest, kindest people I know! It’s probably something about being close to nature 🌱

And the red tulip lives for another year. Perhaps for an annual “gah, what is that red tulip doing there?” reaction from Laura. 😂😘 Random red spring flowering bulbs would be a perfect April Fool’s prank, Aaron. 😉😉

As a kid growing up on a mixed farm, we hand planted 20 acres of potatoes. Rows were marked out by a horse drawn sled. We walked along and cut and dropped sets . They were planted about 1 foot apart using a toe to keep any stragglers in the row. The sets were planted raw and we never tried to plant eyes up. The planted rows were hilled up with a hiller and we walked away. Potatoes had no problem growing.

The potato tutorial was really helpful. As for the purple potatoes I love how you say they’re an experiment since you’ve not grown them or cooked with them. That’s one of the many encouragements I’ve gleaned from watching your videos. I’m trying new varieties, planting combinations, colors and textures because of you, Laura. Thank you!

When you hit the city drain cover, it reminded me about how we help to protect any in ground lines electric/water/sewer in France. The lines are usually laid a meter (3ft) or more under ground, and then covered with soil, leaving 1/3 (1ft) open where we lay a long strip of red mesh over the buried lines, then cover the red mesh up to ground level. This way, when digging, you would hit the red mesh first indicting you to stop digging. I'm not sure if that is a practice here in the states, maybe might help you guys with any new lines being laid.

Laura, you always pick on yourself for having dirt on your face after planting, but honestly it makes you all the more beautiful! It's a sign of your hard work and shows how much you love what you do 🙂

That little flower shed looks like a perfect kids' party place for all the seasons--- decorating different themes inside and outside. Outdoor party activities from water balloon fights, to pumpkin carving, to snowball fights. Small enough to decorate thoroughly and large enough to seat a bunch of happy kids!

Hey Laura, the purple spuds make great crisps. If you want to make things really interesting you could make a crisp medley using the purple potatoes, orange sweet potatoes, & the white potatoes. Also, they say the universe gives you what you need, not necessarily what you want; given you keep getting random red flowers popping up, do think the universe is trying to tell you that you need more red in your life?😝😂 Thanks for yet another wonderful video. My father taught me to cut my potatoes and then put them inside a paper bad with bone meal and shake it all over the potatoes. Then let the potatoes sit for a couple of days and then plant according to preferred method. Works great~Thank you Laura~

Of all the spaces, I am most excited about the flower shed. What a beautiful workspace surrounded by fruit trees and looking out over the cut and veg garden. I can’t wait to see it filled with old cupboards of vases and pots! My daughter loves the purple potatoes best. We have done mashed but fries and roasted are the way I like them. I am definitely going to look for the Tiny Dancer. I would love to put in smaller lilacs in my garden.

Natchez blackberry is part of a group named after native Americans. My home town, Natchez, MS is named for the Natchez as we have several mounds & artifacts from that period. Natchez is the oldest settlement on the MS River and features many antebellum homes but sadly their gardens are lacking IMO, as I have a 'Laura style' of gardening. It's still a beautiful little town. Aaron would love the architecture I believe.

Love when I see a 28 minute video. The longer the better! Lol I love to watch and enjoy my first coffee of the day. My husband knows I get to watch Garden Answer before he can get the iPad. I know how it is to start digging and realize the dirt only goes a few inches. Our house is from the 1920’s. When we first moved in, we went to plant a tree and a flower bed. Realized there is actually concrete that goes out about 4 feet from the slab.

What a coincidence, lol! Laura says to get this planted before whatever storm arrives and looks to the distance… lightening strike in my real life, also waiting on a storm.

My parents have a whole bed of Natchez blackberries. They live in Alabama and the plants handle the heat and humidity superbly. They start getting gallons of blackberries mid-late June in their 7b garden. Plus, no thorns which is great!

Here in Hawaii we eat purple sweet potatoes, either the Molokai or Okinawan varieties. You can mash them up, and add some coconut milk to add some creaminess. Yum!

I've grown the purple majesty potatoes, they're SO fun to cook up & eat. The color stays when cooked so it's a fun treat to eat purple potatoes. I didn't make a potato salad with them, but that would be fun. They have good flavor & even mashed up with butter take on a lighter purple color. I think you'll enjoy them & so will your kiddos ( it'llbe interestingto see what Aaron thinks, please record a video of his reaction 😄).

I love purple potatoes! I typically roast them with some carrots.

I love using purple fingerling potatoes with carrots or butternut squash and Brussel sprouts, red bell pepper. I roast them with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. Beautiful combination and yummy.

Good Morning, I don't think you need to keep that box cleared of mulch, just find a nice rock that is not too heavy or a small statue to place on the top as a marker. It will add interest to the area and let you know right where the box is in case someone needs access. What about using a ground cover, like lamium, for the rest of the space?

Seeing you over the year or so that I have been watching take plants and moving them gave me the courage to do that. I had a Pieris that was not doing well I moved it and replaced it with a yellow twig dogwood. Well that pieris is showing new growth!! You helped me save that plant and I am SO EXCITED! Thank you!

Purple potatoes are fantastic! They taste like a Yukon gold but with more nutrients than a regular yellow or red fleshed potato. Super fun for kiddos too. Super excited to see your garden this year!!!

Great video, super informative! A tip I have for picking blackberries is to wait until the berry is dull instead of shiny, that really makes a big difference in the sweetness. I’m actually pulling my blackberry vines out because they’re so aggressive, I’m thinking of moving them to another part of our property but haven’t decided yet. I prefer raspberries 😊

We are technically in the same zone as you (we are in SE Michigan) but compared to your area and other places in the country in “our growing zone” we are at least 2 weeks behind you in terms of spring color. It is just now that the trees are budding up and the daffodils are finally blooming and I have yet to see a tulip bloom. I just can’t wait!!

When planting potatoes in your own garden, one should always use "certified seed". Not only does it protect your own potatoe crop but it protects large farmers around you from disease that might be in potatoes. You should always know where you get your potatoes from that you are using for sets.

Purple mashed potatoes would be fun for Halloween dinner. Also.... With everything going on around that electric and water area, it might be nice to just make a small lean-to with lattice around it and then plant different vine plants around it. Workers would still be able to get in and out on one end to do any work if needed.

Love your videos!! My parents have grown blue potatoes before and when you boil them they loose the purple color… so no weird mashed potatoes or potato salad! I agree the best way to keep them purple is to roast or crisp them! Great color addition!

We love purple potatoes and, in particular, purple sweet potatoes (a variety I cannot remember the name of) that tastes exactly like a cake! I'm trying to get the right variety, so every year, I order different purple sweet potato varieties hoping to 'discover' it again!
