Күн бұрын

Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am planting out my entire cut flower farm- minus inside my deer fence! There are 14 rows between 70 and 95 feet in length. I am so excited to share the progress with you all!
For reference I am in Upstate New York. Our last frost is typically around May 20 in zone 4b.

Well... I think that an average flower buyer pictures growing flowers like: a lady in a nice dress, straw hat with a fancy ribbon, a wicker basket over one arm and a pair of scissors in the other hand, perfect English garden with tallish bushes of flowers and she just picks and snaps them and elegantly places them in the basket, no back bending....so not lady like!!!! Yes, right!!! Nicole, my back hurts by just watching you:)))))

She's pretty either way. It's pretty to do what you want. And be who you are. I'm not trying to be mean, but saying "you look soooo much prettier without the makeup" isn't the complement you think it is. What if someone really enjoys wearing makeup they just can't do it all the time? Now, anytime they put on makeup, which they liked to do, they will think they don't look good. That isn't fair.

There are situations where I prefer each. If I feel well and I am in a happy mood I prefer B. If I don't feel well and am in an unhappy mood I prefer a soft and gentle bouquet. I have good days and bad days because I am 90 years old. Your flowers remind me of my mother. She planted flower beds all around our homes over the years.

Zone envy is a real thing but every zone has it's issues. I live in the desert, zone 8B. We have had weeks of temps around 110 with no rain for months and months!! I have to use shade cloth to keep everything from burning up. Thankfully I don't have deer and the scorpions don't seem to bother the plants. :) I do have naughty Raccoons sometimes. For me I have land envy. I love your land!! Everything is beautiful and the flowers will be Amazing. Great Job!!

UT here. Apart from land envy (because, yes!) I was looking at the wonderful meadow around the planting beds thinking "everything is so GREEN" And I guess, yes, it needs to get mowed once in a while to not get out of hand, and it's a chore and I would curse it if I had the land and didn't have the machinery and manpower... But it looks wonderful from here and now ;) Currently the only thing that remains (somewhat) green without regular irrigation is bindweed. You get used to it, it's normal - until something reminds you how things look like in May/June in, say, zone 7a that isn't incidentally in the desert.
@a.l1249

Correction: trees and established shrubs are green, and I have converted front yard to shrubs, perennials and drip irrigation (and park strip gets watered by hand when I get to it, and you gotta love native plants and nativars). And things stay green. But it's tired green. The "I learned to live with the heat" green. "Grass is always greener" certainly gets a new meaning!

So you can make jigs for that plastic. Take some plywood. And measure and cut holes with a hole saw (its a drill bit), like a 2 inch bit or 1.5 inch in the ply wood. Make the plywood the width of your beds, & whatever length is easy for you to move. Measure holes 4, 6, 8 etc whatever your common spacings are, one jig per spacing tho. Then you lay your jig on the plastic and burn the holes in with a light pass with a blow torch or flame thrower thingy (you get them for melting tar for driveways or something) Also if you make zigzags with your rows and columns instead of squares you get more plants in the space with them having more room around themselves. (So if row A starts at 0 inches (so 0, 6, 12, etc), row B would start at 3 inches (so 3, 9, 18, etc), and row C would start at 0 inches (so 0, 6, 12 etc), etc assuming a 6 inch spacing. I hope that makes sense its sooo much easier to draw it out instead of writing. Lol

Love your honest, real face. Farming isn't about cute in my book. You are so lucky to have moms that jump in and help, but seeing your real face I can see why they would. Sure the rainbow will look great but truly don't have the patience to figure it out, knowing it isn't a public landscape but a harvest field... tip of the trowel to you . Until last year never heard of ranuculus flowers, thought it was just a knitting pattern that was the rage. Hope the rain falling today lightens before it gets to you.
