In this video I am out in the field with a family farm near Vincennes Indiana as they get started with their 2022 field work. This farm grows several crops and potatoes are the first crop to get planted. You will see them prep the ground, cut the seed potatoes and plant the potatoes in the field and I also have some BONUS FOOTAGE as a few trains pass by the field on a railroad track that runs along the field they are working in.
I've done some other videos at this farm in years past including potato harvest.

Hi, nice to see how they plant potatoes in the states, pretty much the same like here in Central Europe ... Interessting, the Versatile in front of the planter was sold in Europe as New Holland or Fiat Agri ... greetings from Austria.

The reason for cutting the seed is to get more plants out of a ton of seed potatoes. For example, if you had a hundred pounds of potatoes that contained 500 potatoes, that would you have 500 plants when planted. But a potato that is the size of baseball could be cut in 4 pieces. Therefore when you size and cut the seed you could end up with 1500 pieces or 1500 plants. That means you can plant many more acres from a load of cut ones verses whole. Answer to earlier question. You plant about 2,000 to 2,200 pounds to the acre.

Interesting video Mike. Thanks. I have spent many hours planting potatoes, both in the tractor and on the planter. The planters we used had the row units behind the bins and there was a chair mounted there and someone would sit there and watch the reels going around to make sure that the picks were grabbing the seed. The picks can hit a rock and bend or get dull or whatever and start missing seed. I noticed in that short clip that on one wheel, the picks were missing a lot of the seed. Maybe in chip potatoes they don't care but in fresh potatoes we did. Every time a pick misses a seed you are losing plant stand. I bet that he was losing at least 20% on that one wheel. Just an observation from an potato grower.

I live in northern Wisconsin and I am right in the middle of where many of those potatoes are grown. I guess we have good soil for growing seed potatoes. I’m sure they probably came from right down the road from me as we have two large farms at supply a lot of potatoes to Indiana in Missouri for planting. We also have the Frito-Lay research center and the University of Wisconsin research center for potatoes that’s about 2 miles away from me. It’s pretty interesting to see the whole operation and all the greenhouses they have for different hybrid and testing the potatoes that go into the potato chips etc. my neighbor drives semi for Sowinski farms and hauls potatoes all winter long to get them ready for planting. Love the video!

A CSX Coal train, I hear they're little like Bigfoot sightings these days. Plus a mixed and a double stack! You'll have a ways to catch Wide World of Trains up in NY state though. He had eight on a double track in hour. One lost a air line and went into emergency, causing a slow running order till it was fixed. That bunched them up. Never heard a planter sound like two cylinder before. Rode on a modified 2 row horse planter dropping hand cut spuds behind a 48 JD B. Cultivated with a 47 B. Still walked the row with a hoe and dug them by hand though.

Always amazed me how tight the versatile and ford new holland tractors with super steer could turn. Any chance of a video explaining the relationship of those two company’s and how the super steer works in the future Mike?
@kennethgreen2829
@kennethgreen2829 2 жыл бұрын
I can not speak for the relationship but I know Ford acquired Versatile along with Sperry New Holland Company (as it was known back then) in 1986 or 1987. I remember the purchase being featured in one of the farming magazines (Power Farming) here in the UK at the time as I was quite taken with the striking look of the tractors. Here in the UK such big machines were known as prairie tractors and were not available over here, and even if they were, our field sizes did not warrent such beasts. To this day, I have not seen a single Versatile machine here and I believe that there is only a single importer/dealer for the whole UK.
@bobwest2807
@bobwest2807 2 жыл бұрын
I believe Ford developed super steer on the 70 series tractor. They then changed name to new holland in the Mid 90s, They then merged with case to become CNH but sold the super steer tractors to Buhler who were then taken over by Versatile.

Great to see the skill of the row markers are still being used! I do not understand how their field s so "rock free". Do they use a special rock picker to clean these fields? I can imagine that a smaller rocks and a potatoes are about the same size. Thanks for sharing Mike, this is really neat.

@@farmerboywc9392 Thank you for the information. Where I live in Ohio we grow rocks. We can pick a field clean and then we need to pick up rocks again a few years later. I have no idea where all these rocks come from. Safe to say, the only potatoes we will grow are in the garden. Have a great day.

why versatile tractor has that front axle moved complitly to weight of tractor ?
@farmhandmike
@farmhandmike 2 жыл бұрын
This model of tractor offered what was called a super steer or ultra steer which the axle can steer at the ends like usual but also steer at the center pivot area. Steering in two different areas for a tighter/sharper turn. In its day it was a great deal but later tractor manufacturers went to a sculpted frame for a tighter turn radius.

I can’t say for sure but it is very low. Probably about 2%. As long as the piece has an “eye” on it, it will grow. Average seed piece is about 2 3/4 ounce in a perfect world.

Great video Mike ✌ but what is the purpose of cutting the potatoes?
@farmhandmike
@farmhandmike 2 жыл бұрын
The Potatoes are cut as into seeds is the best way to describe it. If you've ever seen a potato sprout they can sprout all over and by cutting them it spaces that out in the row versus one large potato that is not cut and creating several plants in one spot in the row which I'm guessing would result in smaller potatoes off of that plant as too many plants trying to grow in a smaller are versus being spread out. I hope that's a good explanation as I'm trying too word this so its understandable to someone who hasn't planted or grown potatoes before.
