Planting Queen Lime Zinnias & Supertunias While Trying To Avoid A Storm

Today I am planting up my center raised bed with Queen Lime zinnias and Supertunia Vista Bubblegum! This bed is the focal point of my front deck garden and what you can see from inside the house, so I always plant my favorite things here.

@@ChicagoGardenerlol I had read recently that there were batches of vermiculite in the past that had asbestos in them. I will be using both when I setup my Greenstalk here soon and a mask will be on because I want to keep my good lungs good lol

I tried the Supertunia Vistas last year for the first time. They were showstoppers! One tiny plant filled quite a large planter. This year, I tried winter sowing petunias. I tried a variety from Southern Seeds, one from Baker Creek, and some from the Dollar Tree. Surprisingly, the Dollar Tree Petunias were the first to germinate, and they are the biggest. I can't wait to see your zinnia bed! It's going to be gorgeous. Have you tried saving your seeds? I think I'll try saving some seeds to use in our backyard, where I have no specific color scheme, and I am okay with a bit of chaos.

I’ve been the worst at saving seeds but this year my goal is to save some, especially from the floret zinnias!

Hi , your decks are going to be gorgeous. I have some bubblegum vista that I placed in hanging baskets but they don’t seem to like that. I am going to transplant to a big container. Love the queen lime varieties. The orange is beautiful.

Your Zinnias are amazing. I use to use the jiffy pots myself but I've had problems with them drying out too much. Also I wanted to ask no chamomile plants for your teas?

Don’t judge… but I’ve never been a fan of chamomile tea! I actually really like the flowers though so would grow them for bouquets 😆

Looks great! I noticed that you planted the zinnias with the Jiffy pod mesh still intact. I have some also and wondered if I should take the wrapping off. Do the roots still get through?

The roots do get through! I’ve taken it off and left it on and never notice a difference in how it grows.

Your zinnia seedlings are so big and healthy! Did they grow this big completely inside under grow lights? Did you use any fertilizer? I grew some zinnia seedlings in cells using seed starting mix inside for a few weeks and they are a lot smaller than yours.

They got this tall under grow lights for about 4-5 weeks. I used fertilizer once a week! They are big but I think they would have preferred to my moved outside a bit earlier 😆

I can't wait to see those beautiful queen series zinnias. I planted the queen lime red (beginner). Do you pinch them? I just pinches some and they are not as big as yours yet. I also had a rain storm after I planted and they did great.

Some I do and some I don’t pinch depending on if I want it bushier or not. However, I harvest zinnias so often that I feel like I’m basically constantly pinching 🤣

Oh my goodness, I'm growing zinnias as well but mine are Zinnia Lilliput and semi dwarf pumila. This is my first year of gardening and I'm so happy I found your channel. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your tiered planter for your herbs? I loved that video and you have me wanting chocolate mint in my patio garden and many others, lol. Thank you for sharing all your tips and tours. It's super helpful and I just enjoy looking at your garden. It's so lovely. 💖

I’m glad you’re here! The tiered planter is from gardeners supply but it’s been out of stock for awhile. I’ve found a similar looking one on Amazon. I can’t speak to quality since I don’t have it but I’ll link it below!

They’re “jiffy seed starting kits” and I get them either at Home Depot or on Amazon! I like them bc it comes with everything I need in the kit.
