It's been 6 weeks since I started rooting the Opuntia Santa Rita pads. Now it is time to move them to their own pots.

They made roots fast!!! I believe the opuntia aurea you sent has rooted. It's growing new shoots at the top. I would say the others probably are too! Great thing about opuntia is they are easy!! The mulch looks great!! I imagine it will work well in your climate!! Your " no love soil looks like it will fit the bill!!! Great choice for them!!! Thanks for sharing !!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌻🌷🌴💐🌱🍀🌿🌸🌳🪴🌹🌾😃👍

Wow, that was a workout! I can't even imagine the heat you are having. Your lows are higher than our highs. And, we have crazy high humidity-it was 91% at 6am today. Which is why cacti don't do very well for me. They survive but don't thrive. I would love to get one to flower!

Hi Ana, thank you for this educational vid again. I live in the Netherlands and I created a winter hardy garden myslef which is very uncommon in our cimate. Therefor I DO use white pebbles around my cactee. first they drain the rain faster in the ground and second , as our climate is not that hot most of the year the plants can use this extra warming when the sun is shining. In your climate the wooden mulch will work great I think and...it looks so nice aswell. Thank you Ana for sharing. Kind regards, Hans.

I live in Texas, I’ve used plain old potting soil on them and they are fine. People think that because Opuntia grow slow they can be crowded, but after 3 years of having cacti I can tell you they LOVE big spaces. They have both a deep and wide root system. I used to make “mixed cactus planters” with 3+ pads and omg they were root bound after a year

@@jorgecanales798 thanks for sharing your experience with Opuntias. It validates my decision to plant one pad per pot. ☺️ My other Opuntias also grow well (even with neglect) here. I know these Santa Rita can grow massive so hopefully I can contain their size in a pot.

Hi Ana, really interesting video, thanks for sharing, and nice to see how fast and well those Opuntia pads have rooted. Also interesting to see how you are using mulch for your cacti, I suppose that is possible because of your very hot and dry desert climate in Las Vegas...because if I used mulch in my temperate, European climate, it would be the end of my Opuntia plants after only a short while, haha, ....due to risk of rot and all the fungal infections that develop from the organic mulch material in humid climates! Always fascinating to see how adapting and creative the cultivation of cacti in different climates needs to be ... (cactus) horses for (cactus) courses, haha! Have a great weekend ahead!

Thanks for your inputs. Yes, I think my climate might make the mulch work. Someone said mulch disintegrate in about three months. I have mulch over my roses and for 5 years now, the mulch are still solid. But then I have to see how they will affect my soil moisture for cactus in the long run. Wish me luck!

💜 the purple pads! I haven’t ever used mulch in my cactus containers so it will be interesting to see how yours works out. My experience has been that the pads grow pretty fast - I had to give mine to my friend to plant in her yard because it outgrew my containers. And I thought it was hot here at 116 🥵!

Like I mentioned before, I'm White Mountain Apache, but our moccasins look way different than other tribe's moccasins. Our moccs have a toe guard, it's a circle on the tips of our toes, and it actually represents an opuntia pad. There's a story and many songs/prayers about how that toe guard started, the supernatural being who started it all. Come winter time I'll share it with you, we can only tell stories in the winter 😊

"Optunias can thrive in crappy soil" You nailed that one alright!!! LOL Mine grew for decades in engineered compacted fill dirt that my home was built on, which I've discovered over the years the builder composed out of rock hard caliche, framing nails, leftover pieces of drywall edging, scrap 2x4's, beer bottle caps (those may have been from me...) and occasional asphalt pavement waste! Every time I dig a new hole to plant something, it seems I discover a new time capsule of junk they threw into the fill material! But, prickly pear thrived there anyway. Thanks, I got a kick out of that! Zk P.S. For my cactus down here in Tucson, I've only used rock mulch or nothing at all around my cactus that are in the ground. The sides of potted plants here get heated up pretty good by the sun that shines on them, and I think that is the greater heat issue for me rather than the surface temps. Columnar cactus I have in pots, are markedly thinner, maybe more stressed plants, in pots when compared with the identical cuttings in the ground. But they still bloom pretty good either way!

Why do you usually don't like using perlite? Curious . .
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 22 күн бұрын
Perlite is very light and floats to the top when I water my plants. It’s messy. Plus it is not safe to breathe in the dust from perlite when it is very dry.

@@CactusCaffeine That's true, I hate that about it. My problem is that my plants are getting so big and they are all in pots and I must keep moving them all around depending on the weather (we've bee getting insane amounts of rain this year), so I use it because of how lightweight it is. But I do hate that dust and I hate how it turns dirty-brown and floats to the surface, lol.
