To save money on soil, you can fill the bottom with your fall leaves, grass clippings, etc. it will compost in the bottom and feed your plants. You will see some shrinking of the soil as it decomposes, just add more dirt to the top next season. Love me some strawberries!!! Good luck y’all! Sending garden blessings!!

Wouldn't that burn the roots of your strawberries since the microorganisms are breaking down the leaves, releasing heat as a byproduct?
@butterknifeninja96
@butterknifeninja96 3 жыл бұрын
@@wvt5825 Theoretically unless it is constantly being disturbed it won't have good access to oxygen, and so it will be composting through an anaerobic process also known as cold composting which is much slower. (Its basically the same result as if someone starts a compost pile and neglects to turn it to add oxygen, it will still compost but with no heat and very slowly)

To help keep track of the new plants/runners the 2nd and 3rd year I use the colored twist ties found on bread bags. Example: Yellow goes around the 1st yr runners the mother plants get a red one. Keep track of the colors codes over the years on an index card noting the type, yr and how many of each :-)

When less berries are growing collect them in a freezer bag put them in the freezer. When you collect enough to do jelly/jam, make desserts or sauces thaw them. Be sure to trim the top, wash them also before freezing.

I just started growing strawberries this year for the first time. I bought some Bonnie Plants Ozark Beauty that have white flowers and then the other day I seen some Bonnie Plants Sweet Berry that have pink and red flowers at Lowe’s so I bought some of them too. Check Lowe’s you might be able to find them still.

I started some from seed I ended up with 3 plants that made it. I live in a zone 6B and a lot of my foliage has died from the snow and ice we have gotten the last few weeks. Can I clean the dead leaves off? Should I leave it alone and new growth will push them out? I have never seen a strawberry clean up video I don’t think

There are, but you have to be in a warm enough zone to grow them. I had a few of them but had to dig a hole in the ground to put the tub in and pile straw on them to keep them alive over the winter. Eventually gave up and stuck with berries that would survive my zone 3b. Most of these types are zone 5+.

I found strawberry plants in small plastic pots for $10 each. Pass. I found the same variety, 25 bare root plants for $10. It takes longer for production, an extra year but it saves a lot of money. Cheap and some times free pots can be made with food grade, 5 gallon buckets. Just drill holes for good drainage. You can save money on potting mix by mixing your own. There are many Utube videos on how to do this. She spends a lot but you can have much the same for a lot less cost. I did it.

You can literally grow strawberry’s from seeds off a store bought strawberry. Just cut off skin and place in between two pieces paper towel and once it does out after few days lightly scrap seeds of the skin and they are tiny but plant in a small cup with plastic rap over it In sun and after a bit it will sprout. Also the great thing about strawberries is if you buy one plant, you can have strawberries for a lifetime because they produce so many runners which make daughter plants.

Setting up a new garden at my new house and cannot wait to have strawberries again. Last time I had them growing my son was just under 2, now he is 3 and he remembers eating them from the garden and is so excited to have them again. On that note, when you mentioned not wanting a swing set, what about adding little pockets throughout your garden for Benjamin? That way he can have an insight area to play wherever you are working. Swing hanging from a tree, little tub (just like the one in the video) with dirt just for him to play and drive his cars in, a little sand table tucked in somewhere else...tons of ideas. Like a secret little kids garden. That way nothing is too in your face and also easily dismantled when he grows out of it or changed as he grows. It doesn't have to be tacky, brightly colored toys either. You can get creative and make the spots out of stuff that fits in well. Like the teepee you created for him...stuff like that tucked in throughout the property. Just a thought. My son loves his swing set but it is the swing and sand table he likes the most. Our vegetable garden is out of sight from his swing set so I have left a small 3x3 raised bed available for him to dig in in my garden so he stays there to play while I work and he loves it.

@Janetta LeRose ... I’m with you! I went down this homesteading rabbit hole on KZfaq and i can’t get enough. How many other people now want to grow food (even on a small scale) out of concern for what happens when supply chain fails? If people growing food is one of the fallouts of COVID-19 I say that’s a great thing. I’ve always loved the idea of urban gardening. I’m finally getting my toes wet with a herb & veggie container garden. Good luck with your garden 👍🏽

I’d like to try this with my students at school but I don’t understand how the drip tube/watering works. Could you please explain a little more? Thank you. 😊
@countryhamop4580

It's pretty much just standard plastic tubing with some holes punched or molded into it. The water comes out the holes at a slow rate and waters the roots rather than the whole plant (the leaves really don't need it- they'll get all they need through the roots. What she did was to put some solid wall plastic tubing (without holes) through the bottom and up to the top to carry water to the drip tube, then she connected the short piece of drip tube with the coupler, then plugged the far end of it so the water only comes out the tiny holes otherwise most of it would come out that end. What she didn't show was on the outside end of the solid wall tubing she had to install some sort of adapter which would screw onto the end of a garden hose. Then it's just a matter of turning on the water until the soil gets as moist as it needs to be.

I will love a follow up on these. We are tagging them as favorite for next years garden if they do well. I’m so excited. I plan on letting them be a little surprise for my 3 year old granddaughter when she comes to visit. She loves strawberries and is just now showing interest in what I am doing outside. By next year, I expect her brilliant self to be a full fledged gardener! Lol. Yea right. Anyway, thanks for posting. God bless.

Great information! Question regarding feeding, why do you work in feed throughout the whole pot rather than just the top portion? Do plants (flower and food) benefit from having feed underneath their roots if they can’t yet reach it? I thought the feed would water itself down the pot so have never thought to work it below the surface

Now I want to plant some strawberries in containers! Thanks for the inspiration! One question: how would you over winter the strawberries in containers? Do you need a cold frame to keep them from getting too cold or freezing through the winter? I'm in Zone 4b.

@@Heartbeetnutritionist they most certainly would not survive in that metal container, they would freeze solid lol... i recommend a bare bottom raised bed, which allows the roots to lock into existing soil, in which case they WILL overwinter! hope this helps! (: god bless.

The berries she planted might survive if you dug a hole just deep enough for the top of the tub to be level with the ground, and then cover them with 6-8" of straw to overwinter. Otherwise I'd just choose types (none will have the pretty red or pink flowers, though) that will survive without a lot of fuss. I've found Charlotte strawberries are pretty hardy and I'm about to add some Fort Laramie plants.

Hi Laura, I have a question regarding the fruits,like the different colors of the flowers, will there be any difference in the fruit that the plants bear? I mean to ask if the strawberry from pink bloom plant will taste/ look different from the red bloom plant? just curious. Thank you for your videos and answering all our questions 🙌🏻👍🏻 they are very helpful 💙 Im glad to be part of Garden Answer🌺 😊

I grew some of these red and pink blossomed ones once (different varieties than what she planted), and was underwhelmed by the taste. If you're going for taste try the Charlotte strawberry. You won't have the pretty blossoms, but they're like strawberry candy.

Thank you so much! Your beginner videos are so clear and informative! Even showing and naming the pieces in your irrigation setup, describing the hole spacing and flow rate - that was an aside, but contained so much information itself! I have a new pink strawberry still in its pot, and trying to figure out where to put it. I think I can do a container like yours!

@Pythonaria

@@emmamartin817 What you need to do is attract natural predators such as Hedgehogs, frogs, toads, newts and Slow Worms. They see slugs and snails as a veritable feast. Don't use slug pellets as all that does is attract even more slugs and they can be highly poisonous to domestic pets and wildlife. Make a small pond, doesn't have to be big and very soon you'll have frogs and toads hopping around. They also eat other pests.

Sorry but I go the chemical route. It's the only way that works. J have toads and they freak me out when I find them.
@Pythonaria
@Pythonaria 2 жыл бұрын
@@emmamartin817 Then you eat the chemicals you use. Might as well just buy your veg at the supermarket. I don't know why some people don't like frogs and toads - they're gardeners friends. I don't like Earwigs but they also do a good job of getting rid of pests such as greenfly, vine weevil larvae etc. so I leave them to go about their business. I suppose I'm lucky as I like reptiles and amphibians. What I say to people who dislike or fear these creatures is learn about them, then they become less scary. Another thing you could do is learn about companion planting. This is where you plant, for example, lavender which deters midges, mosquitoes and other flying pests. There's a lot of info on the internet, just make sure you type UK into the search bar otherwise you'll get plants coming up that don't grow here. Hope this helps and good luck with your gardening 🙂🌻
@emmamartin817
@emmamartin817 2 жыл бұрын
You do you. I'll do me. Avoiding chemicals is not a major factor in why I grow food or in my life. I have looked at companion planting before and it's too much work for me as I have limited garden and greenhouse space and mobility issues so the amount of effort I can put it to the garden is restricted. As for ponds...half of it's a bog anyway.

Cute idea!! Question though.. - I've been reading to not grow any berries in any metal because it leaches into the food.. Do you believe otherwise? Or is the risk so little that you're not concerned? Also, I notice on the blueberries you planted - you used soil acidifier (not berry tone) in a clay pot. Is there a reason for that? Thanks for all the great information - as always!
