Planting The Best Summer Food Plots For Deer For Maximum Tonnage! We used the firminator to plant our summer food plots for deer. We planted a mix of clovers, iron clay cow peas, buck wheat, sunflowers and sunhemp. buck wheat is very high in protein and moisture content as well as providing minerals for the soil. Sunflowers are also good for the soil and good for building organic matter. Iron clay cow peas are fast growing providing a lot of green tonnage.

I hit up Hancock Seed Co this year... Heard great stuff about them, so I decided to give them a try. Too wet in SE Michigan to get the tractor into the fields though. I hope I get something to grow this year. Great video guys!

I feel u bro got up this past Saturday hook up tractor drove 5 hours to Ky from ga started at 230 Am planted 4 acres of beans was back in ga by 1030 that night I was eating 5 hour energy all day good luck

You ever try millet or sourgham in your mix? Ever try broadcasting brassica and cereal grains into that clover end of summer?

Yes I’ve done that all. Works well. I actually used that for the walls I created mixed with sunhemp and sunflowers

Its time to plant here now (soil temp was over 70 here in west texas/ 5 yr avg puts us at 65. It gets tough here with drought and heat in the summer. Would a kill plot (.25 acre) of cow peas/sunflower and buckwheat work out here? Also, I have the ground hog max, and wondering if I can till that mix in with it in the fall, or will the sunflowers stalks get too big? I planted clover in the fall, but drought didnt give us much results last fall/into spring.

It wasn’t a blend from them I bought everything and mixed it myself. Sun hemp, iron clay peas and buck wheat.

I thought the best way to improve the soil was to practice no till? Some people say disc, some say no till, everyone has a different opinion. Should I buy a disc or should I buy a no till drill.

No till has its place. But I don’t like it in most cases. For the majority of food plotters discing is the way to go. Think of it this way. What has farmers done way before our time?? Disc the ground and plant. Disc in green material to build cec and organic matter. I have soil samples from my farms where I been discing for years that show organic matter percentages around 12-16 percent and cec above 15. That doesn’t happen by accident. At the end of the day it’s up to you and your personal choice.

If you till up your greens in to dirt it can’t really decompose as go as leaving them on top so that not really “green manure “if you let it set on top then it’s “green manure” and also keeps soil moist longer

Turning in is creating it also. We’re not using a no till drill so leaving them on top would do me no good. Turning greens into the soil Build soil. There’s tons of ways to do it this is what I choose works perfectly fine. Leaving duff layers on top is not my thing. I will say doing it that way does help soil moisture 100 percent but were not using that method. 👊

Yes this is true but you don’t need a no-till drill to do it with leaving duff layer on top you can do like i do with is cut the grass weeds etc. and throw small seeds on top right before it rain and for bigger seed cultipack it and it does a great good especially in rocky soils just an idea if you get some were and it’s rocky or hard ground and great videos by the way

If doing an acre how many pounds of buckwheat, iron clay peas, sunn hemp, and soybeans would you mix together?

You can do about 40-50 pounds of beans broadcasted 20 pounds of buckwheat 5 pounds of sunhemp would work well. I like to over seed a smidge but that’s a good number.

A lot of factors go into it. Birds eating seeds amount of turkeys etc.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I planted ag soybeans from the Turkey Federation about month ago. They were up about 8 inches a week ago. Today there's not many left. Thinking about making a mix to hopefully last longer.

William Tucker yeah that’s a tough one man. Usually planting beans you need acres and acres of them depending on deer density. That’s why I like mixed a lot better

Definitely not good but we do it all the time. I’d be more worried about your hitch. I’ve head to weld extra brackets on the hitch

I live in Louisiana and there's hardly any videos on food plots down here I planted soybeans, cow peas, and sunflowers this spring. Not a single sunflower came up, but beans and peas did. Any advice on how that could've happened? Also it real wet down here so the field stayed wet this spring

chris hall hard to say really. Probably because it was to wet. Birds can eat them up as well quick! That’s why I always overseed a little to compensate for that.
