I have 4 Rose of Sharon bushes in my yard. They keep the humming birds around for a few last weeks of summer here in NY.❤️And my sparrows love the seed pods in winter.

We have two of these framing our front walkway. One of them is half white and half purple and it has gotten huge. I’ve had to trim it twice this summer so it doesn’t block our walkway. I’m disappointed and plan to move them in the spring. They were planted by a landscaping company.

Hi Laura, I love your videos and all the information that you share. I just purchased 4 purple pillars , I am hoping there growth is quicker with the height they get to you. I am using them as a hedge . Kath

Hi Mel, please know that Laura does not reply to the comments on our channel, but your choice for this as a hedge is a good one! The bicolor bloom is gorgeous, but do note this shrub is not as wide as others in our line, so if you want the plants touching you will need to plant accordingly. Here is the page on that plant with the maximum height and width included. Thanks for watching! www.provenwinners.com/plants/hibiscus/purple-pillar-rose-sharon-hibiscus-syriacus

Good early morning, Laura and Aaron! Wow, this video was scheduled to drop way before 4 AM, what a treat for my early rising today! I don’t have any roses - however, hope to someday. How well do the grow in a half barrel? Or in a tall and wide planter? Thanks again and hope you have a splendid rest of your day with Benjamin! 💜

With the mature height of this plant it will be best in the landscape, a good wind would easily knock this over in a container of any type. sorry to say!

Hi Laura! I have 2 of these, except the Purple Pillar. I have no idea what to plant at the base. I have them along a very narrow, brick lined walkway to provide privacy from my next door neighbor (I live in a rowhome.). On the other side of the walkway, i have a limelight hydrangea standard that i put supertunia bourdeaux underneath and they love it there. I also have a few spiderwort near the Purple Pillars, but need a recommendation of something that can go at the base of the Pillar that wont interfere with the Purple Pillar growth! Thanks in advance!

@ProvenWinnersKZfaq I’m in 5b Colorado and I planted them one month ago while still being dormant. We are getting 90 degrees this week and they still don’t have any leaves. I tested pruning the branches and they are alive - when will they start to leaf out? It’s already 6/10. Thanks!

I just bought a sugar tip rose of Sharon. Should I wait until fall to plant it to minimize shock? I live in central Massachusetts and a heatwave is in the forecast.

Question: I am using ten of the Pillar Rose of Sharon as a privacy fence on property line. I want them to grow to the full height. Do I need to trim back in Spring for new blooms or can I just fertilize and let them be? Do they bloom on Old growth and continue to bloom all season?

Hi, I have a newly planted rose of sharon double red althea and some of the buds are turning yellow and then falling off. What can I do to help it. Thank you for your time. I love your videos!
@ProvenWinnersYouTube

There are a few reasons a rose of Sharon wouldn’t bloom. Their buds will fail if there’s too little sun, overwatering, or drought.

I live in zone 9b which rarely freezes. Is White or Purple Pillar truly deciduous (meaning it will drop leaves regardless of temperature)? Or, does it only drop leaves if we have a freeze?

Hi Proven Winners, can you tell me the color difference in the light pink shade in the Pink Chiffon, Peppermint Smoothie, Danica and Sugar Tip? I don’t think I can get Pink Chiffon or Danica in my area. Love watching Laura in her garden!

Hi Laura, I'd love to plant this as a privacy screen between me and my neighbour. Can I plant this right up against my fence, or do I need to leave some space, e.g., 1 foot, between it and the fence?
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube Жыл бұрын
This is the Proven Winners channel, just so you know it is not Laura answering :), you want to look at the mature width of the plant and plant this half that distance from the fence, and we would recommend going out another foot to leave some space between the plant and the fence. We hope this helps!

Hello. We’ve had this plant for a couple years now and love them. For some of these plants we have the growth has been on all new wood from the ground and for others its grown on old wood. Is this supposed to grow on old wood which allows it to get taller each season, or should it be cut back each year since it grows on new wood? Trying to figure out which pillar had a weird year by growing differently than the rest. The description says it grows on new wood but that would make it difficult to ever get to a mautrue height.
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Like all roses of Sharon, it blooms on new wood - in other words, it creates its flower buds for the year only after it starts to leaf out in spring. However, these should be created on both old and new portions of the plant. Once the plant starts to leaf out in spring, it will begin creating both flower and leaf buds. Any new growth it puts out in, say, June, is unlikely to have the time to develop flower buds, so may not have flowers for that season, or may get them later in the season. We have observed that both of the Pillar roses of Sharon are much more heat-loving than other types, and definitely bloom best in hot, not merely warm, weather.

@@ProvenWinnersKZfaq thank you. So just to clarify, I should expect leaves and flowers on existing wood and not just new wood that grows from the ground up next year correct?
@mikesingley8888
@mikesingley8888 3 жыл бұрын
I always assumed new wood meant completely new branches from the ground up vs the existing branches.
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikesingley8888 Yes, correct.
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikesingley8888 New wood is either, from an existing branch that is stemming off of another, or a new branch beginning from the base of the plant. These are beautiful care-free plants, enjoy!

I just got this plant and my research says that it blooms on new wood but pruning isn’t required. Should I prune in the spring or not?
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube Жыл бұрын
There is no need to prune this plant unless it is getting too tall or wide for the area, here is a link to the information page on White Pillar, you'll see that it does not recommend pruning in order to have it bloom. www.provenwinners.com/plants/hibiscus/white-pillar-rose-sharon-hibiscus-syriacus

Do you need to deadhead? Are they sterile or do they spread everywhere?
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube 10 ай бұрын
No need to deadhead, the spent blooms will drop on their own from the plant. This shrub is not sterile, so there may be a few that pop up in the soil, but not many from the experiences we hear from other gardeners. Thanks for watching.

Will this climb on a trellis?
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
This plant is an upright plant with strong branching, so it does not require a trellis. It is best when located in a landscape bed so that it can get sun from all directions, all day long. We hope this helps! We also offer this in Purple, here is a link, www.provenwinners.com/plants/hibiscus/purple-pillar-rose-sharon-hibiscus-syriacus

Our soil ph is 7.8, is that too high for this plant
@ProvenWinnersYouTube

That is very alkaline. Rose of Sharon will withstand it to a pH of 7.5. You would have to add acidifying fertilizers and amendments, such as peat moss.

Is the Pillar Rose of Sharon a sterile kind? I alwa6s love Rose of Sharon, but also understand it's notoriously known for its self-seeding habit except for those sterile kind....🙄
