Hi to all garden lovers.
I am in a gardening center in Poland in a little village called Olza.
I have been choosing plants to make colorful window box for my father’s birthdays
Which happens to be on International Women’s Day, 8 March.
After the grey of the winter, I want to create a very colorful spring plant display. And I have already gathered some gorgeous plants. ranunculus, violas, and daffodils.
So see you in a bit at my parents' house.
I am planning to use my parents' current window box, which has currently very tired autumn/winter arrangement with reindeer and Christmas lights which I am saving and the rest will end up in the compost pile.
The container has fresh soil from the last autumn which is well-draining, so I will not be changing the soil now, as they do so before they plant their summer annuals.
First I will put the composition of my plants in the box to see if I like it.
I will begin with the tallest of my plants which is daffodils White lion.
It is a very beautiful and fragrant double daffodil. The crown is soft yellow and it is surrounded by fluffy white-cream petals.
It grows to approximately 16-18 inches (40-45 cm) tall.
It is a very reliable daffodil and after it is finished blooming, and the leaves will be ready to be cut, I will transplant it into the garden. It blooms usually from mid to late spring. I am gently splitting the bulbs so I do not disturb the roots too much, and plant them towards the back of the window box.
As I mentioned before, I will keep the heather plant they had in it and use it as a filler plant. I like it as it has the perfect yellow-green color.
And now the gorgeous bright pink ranunculus. Unfortunately, the gardening center did not have any tags with these plants, so I am not 100% sure, but I think it is RANUNCULUS MACHE MASEJ ROSE WITH FULL double, blooms.
The Height should be approximately 10-12 inches, 20-25cm.
The roots are really strong, and it is hard to get the nursing container to get off.
As you can see, It is difficult to remove the nursing container due to its very strong and healthy roots.
And now as my third layer, I am adding these charming Violas. I believe it is a very common variety of The Sorbet series, Midnight Glow.
I am finished planting. And now I just water all well, so the plants can settle in their new home and also, wash off any soil on the container.
The window box will be on the southwest side of the house, in a sunny location. Ranunculus love the sun! We will be keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
I believe the contrast of the delicate Ranunculus flowers, the cheerful violets, and the trumpet-shaped daffodils will be amazing.
As I am looking at my display now I feel like it needs something more. Maybe a bit of height.
I have got an idea to cut some branches of pussy willow to add a bit of drama and height.
I am so much looking forward to this display bursting into color soon.
