This video demonstrates how to plant Zinnia seeds indoors before the planting season. Dave the Butterfly Guy uses biodegradable seed starter pots from the company McKenzie. These starter cups can be found at Menards. Or go to: www.plantationproducts.com.
Zinnias are one of the great annual flowers that attract butterflies. They bloom from mid-summer to the end of Fall. They grow from 18" to 36" tall. The Zinnia comes in a variety of colors that attracts butterflies such as, Monarchs, Painted Lady's and Swallowtails. The Zinnia is one of the elite pollinating annuals, a must for butterfly gardens.

Awesome video! Thanks for the tips! I planted a variety mix of zinnias for the first time this year, and they did great. I'm harvesting the seeds of the colors/plants I liked, and I wanna get a good start next year!

That sounds fabulous. Yes, next year I am going to significantly add to how many Zinnias I plant early indoors. I want to triple the amount of Zinnias in my garden and have them blooming by end of June or early July. Keep up the good work!

I think this year, I am going to seed about 50 zinnias in April indoors, to get a good jump on the growing season.

Thank you Dave for your helpful video I wanted to start as many flowers indoors this year Do to lack of bees because I didn’t have any flowers early enough for my vegetable garden last year. 👍

I'm starting from seed this year.I use to have a lot of zienna,sedums,roses blackeyed susan and coneflower.I had brought in poison ivy with mulch.We fought it for 3 years..We took everything out a few years ago..I mean everything!!It broke my heart but the poison ivy was ruining my life.

Teresa, that is so sad! I hope your garden is ready to start over. It sounds like you had a great mix of butterfly attracting flowers. I love Zinnias, since they grow large, they are hearty and from seed you can get great pollinating flowers in a few months. Butterfly haven!

Would it be possible to grow Zinnia from seed to full growth indoors? I live in a flat but would like to try it. Any tips?

I think it will work. Make sure you have a big enough container, so the roots have enough room. Plus, the can go from 18-36 inches tall. Make sure you give them access to lot's of sunlight. Plus, water routinely. Good Luck, they are beautiful flowers!

How many times a day are you spraying them with water?? Just once? Twice a day? This is my first time growing them from seed

I just water them once per day. I wish you luck with the seeds. Zinnias should take off, they should sprout in a couple of weeks. They are a fabulous plant for butterflies!
