I did my first riparium about two years ago in a 20 long with African dwarf frogs and I think your video is right on point. I used a cheap 24” led grow light from Home Depot and my plants went absolutely crazy. I bought several different plants to see what would grow and I ended up potting the plants when I moved recently and I have enormous house plants now. I’m putting starts off them back into the same tank now that I’ve moved. It’s a fun & rewarding thing to grow a mini jungle lake 🤗

@@plantlifeproject monstera, different dracaenas, pothos, lucky bamboo, and a few others I can’t remember the name of. It was summer & Lowes had a huge selection of 4” houseplants so I grabbed ones I liked that the descriptions looked like they might make it. Weirdly I could never get Easter Lily or spider plant to grow. 🤷‍♀️

@@quki3 I posted this comment on another video talking about my ADF’s. I had them before I started my riparium. I’ve since moved & still have them in my riparium with new plant starts. I currently have tadpoles also. Maybe this will be useful even tho it was for another video. Good luck! “I think you’d enjoy African dwarf frogs. I know they’re the cheap little weirdos at the pet store but I’ve had mine for over 5 years and they’re so much fun to watch. Some of this repeats what you said but I wanted to share my experience for anyone considering ADF. I have mine in a rimless 20 long riparium with a large emersed driftwood, stones and planted with anubias & java fern. The riparium plant roots give them places to lay eggs & clean the water. I only use a large sponge filter because they do not like too much water movement. They can have other calm, non food aggressive tank mates if you just need more to look at but they do add comedy to a tank all on their own. Mine know if I tap the glass it’s time to eat & will come right up. They eat mostly Aquatic Frog & Tadpole Food micro pellets (I use Zoo Med) & occasional frozen food. No live food or anything difficult. I have not found mine to be messy eaters at all. Just don’t overfeed them. They need fine enough sand not to choke on as they will sift for food they missed. Any other substrate needs to be big enough they can’t swallow (almost anything bigger than medium sand). They can have a designated sandy eating area. You can even train them to eat out of a 4” bare terra cotta saucer if you can’t use sand. They stay quite small and can be found hanging out in all the crevices or floating weirdly around the tank. They prefer a warmer temperature and mine breed nonstop in 77-78 Fahrenheit. They are hardy but I do recommend anyone buying from pet store to quarantine & treat for everything. I did the trio meds (ich-x, E. M. Erithromycin, general cure) along with Furan because they tend to have fungus at the store & you can’t always see it. I treated mine with the trio all at once & then lost one to fungus while waiting on med to arrive. It wasn’t visible at the store. Anyway, that was over 5 years ago & they’ve been happy & healthy since then. They are silly & I ended up liking them better than most of my fish. They are quite easy and mine are breeding & laying eggs regularly. If you don’t want more just ignore it & they eat the eggs. I have raised the tadpoles & that’s a fun process to watch. Get tadpole food ahead of time as it’s only a few days between eggs & tadpoles. Edited to add: they come to the surface for air so about 12” is the limit for substrate to surface depth for these little guys. They are peaceful but fyi I started in a 10 gallon (four frogs) & two were fighting so I moved to a 20 long. I never had a problem again. I think the 1 gallon per ADF is not a good idea personally.”

I SO agree about experimentation. I've found exactly what you said about plants - some that do great for others, either fail to thrive for me or outright die, while I'm able to grow and have species thrive that others really struggle with. That's both houseplants and aquarium plants. I've found I really enjoy trying new varieties of both and seeing which ones do well for me. I usually try to put anything new into two different tanks with different lighting and whatnot, to see if they thrive in one set of parameters and maybe not in another or do great or poorly in both. One of the reasons I'm REALLY glad for the internet. I'm no longer restricted to whatever plants my local stores put in stock.

I don't use any filters, don't change water and I just top it off with water straight from the tap. I use wave makers, live plants like pothos, lucky bamboos and Philodendron, Seachem Prime, API Algaefix and Milliard baking soda to keep my Stendker discus happy, healthy and big. Let the fish poop, left over food, dead leaves, etc. stay in the tank. My tank now has a nice crust on the bottom and all the three sides except the front so that I can see the fish. Remember to put in Prime on a daily basis according to the volume of water in the tank. If you don't feed the fish, then no Prime is necessary. The baking soda is used to stabilize the PH so that the fish's fins don't get burned. @@consciousmoviereviews9730

I put a monstera in a new tank still cycling. My ammonia was off the charts. Eventually, I checked all the plants I had rooting, and one of my monstera ryzomes was completely rotted out. Hi. Thank you for such an informative video! I've only recently discovered that you can grow house plants in your aquarium and I'm super interested in trying it myself. However my current set up is a lidded tank with the lights all attached to the lid so not suitable for this. I do have a nano tank which I could set up for this and was thinking I coukd keep some cherry shrimp. I'm just wondering if I would need to set the filter up though or could it be a really low maintenance self caring tank? Also, if I were to supplement day light with some extra light from my table lamp, what sort of bulb should I use? Thanks again 😊

I'm pretty sure I see some 'Wandering Jews' plants there too. I've grown that extremely easily out of HOB's, internal filters and tote/planter ponds. I find it roots in water faster than pothos, and in the right environment grows faster until the pothos has enough roots. My pothos i neglected that was growing on top of the media in my 100+ gal rated Fluval aquaclear HOB on my 55 long, has had to be pulled down from my false ceiling. It's tried separating the window molding. It's average stem size is bigger than my thumb, my variegated leaves are larger than my head and some have started to split. I'm almost positive if my living room had near 100% humidity the thing would attempt to flower. I feel bad, but I'm going to be chopping it down soon to redo the tank. Since I have such large stems and they're rigid and have sometimes nearly 3 feet in length before another leaf or node, I'm debating on trying to root it like I've done in the past with straight pieces of lucky bamboo into the bottom of my planter ponds. My spider plant thats also growing in with the Pothos is way easier to manage, because it just makes pups.

Thanks, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! I would recommend putting something over the top of the tank to shade out the light either completely or partially, you may need to experiment with it. That way your Pothos can still get the light it needs to grow and remove nutrients from the water. That’s what I would do. Hope this helps!

Very informative! Thank you for your advice. I have aquariums in my insulated garage that gets down to about 40degrees air temp in winter time with water heated for shubunkins that I bring in from outdoor pond . Is there a minimum temp you would advise against having house plants in aquarium as you do ? I’m new to water plants indoors . I have heat in garage if I need to use it

I grow many houseplants in my greenhouse ponds year round, check out this video 🌿Spring Greenhouse Tour🌿- NEW Plant Experiments, 🐟Guppy and White Cloud Minnow Breeding update🐟 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oc1_e7p22q-wh58.html I heat my greenhouse and water temps get down to upper 50 - lower 60s, most plants have handled it ok. Not sure what the minimum temps are for these plants in water.

Great video. Straight and to the point with great helpful advice! I just placed a Deffenbachia in my aquarium, I know they're poisonous (along with Pothos and Monstera), especially to cats and dogs, it has been a week, the Otos and shrimp seem fine. What has your experienced been? When you trimmed the roots, did the sap go in the water and was there an effect in the aquarium and livestock? Cheers!

Thanks, glad to hear that video it is helpful! I haven’t tried growing it yet , there are so many plants out there! but if you’re concerned, you could adapt it to water in a separate tank or container for several weeks and test it out with just a few fish or shrimp.

Is it possible to propagate lucky bamboo or do u have to keep buying little individual plants? Like where do other retailers get them or sellers, like how do they have so many?
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 9 ай бұрын
It is easy to propagate lucky bamboo. The stem can be cut pretty much anywhere and place the cutting in water, soil, whatever and it will root. I do it often with mine.
@LogacysAquaticLove
@LogacysAquaticLove 9 ай бұрын
@@plantlifeproject so if I cut the bottom portion off or cut it in the middle of the stem. The top part with the leaves will reroot? And the bottom portion which would just have a stalk with the bottom section of roots would end up making leaves at the top? Because my lucky bamboo is just one stalk with no branches with leaves at the top roots and the bottom..

What's up bro,I put peace lilly,swiss cheese,and pothos at the top of my 30 gallon in November..they've been doing well and growing well but recently my pothos has some yellow leaves not the whole thing but about 3 or 4 leaves and when I look innthe tank it looks like some of the roots are dieing. The roots were healthy and strong looking about a week and a half ago..I'm not sure what wrong..so what can I do ?? The only thing I can think of ,is I put fertilizer pills in the bottom of the tank under the soil but some of them popped out to the surface.i think that messed with my water balance.
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 5 ай бұрын
Have you tested your water? Depending on your bio load, there may not be enough nutrients. After testing the water, you may consider a balanced liquid fertilizer like easy green from aquarium co-op, but test the water first. How much light are the plants getting? It’s not uncommon for pothos to lose some leaves especially toward the bottom of the vine as it gets larger and it can still go through cycles of shedding and replacing roots even months after being adapted. Is it putting out new leaves and roots?

I'm struggling. I've tried several times for Philio and monstera deliciosa and it's not working.... The leaves turn yellow, and eventually rot at the bottom.... My tank is 85°. That's the only thing no one ever touches on. Does that matter?? Otherwise, they're clipped where they should be, fully submerged, and still rot.

Sometimes certain plants can be difficult to get started and it can take experimenting to overcome the challenge. You might want to try changing things up , like see if they will root in a separate container with tap water at room temperature (I have done this with certain plants), or if you’re adapting a rooted plant, try a small one instead of a large. Try not pruning the roots, Maybe experiment with the lights, perhaps they need more. These are just some possibilities for changing the approach. I understand the frustration of the plant you want not working. There are plants that I’m struggling with now. I have struggled with spider plant and gave up a few times but then tried it again a year or so later with a different approach and it is growing much better than my other attempts. Sometimes peace lilies don’t adapt for me. Sometimes I get frustrated and need a break and then later ready to try again.

I am having an issue with propagating my pothos. The roots, mainly at the start even if they are long, will get slimy and wipe off leaving a thin piece. Why is that happening and when it does should I cut off the root?

@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject Жыл бұрын
@@tarameyers494 I have never had much success with single leaf cuttings in the water. It seems to require more energy to form the new leaf bud than the cutting can handle. I recommend using tip cuttings with at least 2-3 leaves and 3-4 nodes where roots can form. I have the most success this way.

why big plants can't work for small tanks, the bigger the plant the more nitrate it will suck
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject Жыл бұрын
Big plants can overcrowd small tanks and, depending on the situation, may not get enough nutrients. But you can try it out for yourself. I’m thinking of the example of a large peace lily in a small vase with a betta. In this situation the roots crowd the container too much for the fish and will likely require dosing fertilizer to support the plant.
