Of all the Hydrangea, the Oak Leafs may be my favorite. Their large color changing lobed foliage is truly a delight in the garden. I have been planting these all along the exterior of my property in sunny and shady locations, and I am very excited to watch them all grow.
This video is dedicated to showing how to get your Hydrangea quercifolia in the ground as well as some continuing care and instruction so that you can ensure yours grow as well as possible. Hi Devin...give your family my regards! I bought a jetstream oakleaf and it's beautiful! He's growing like wild fire. I have him on my back deck in part sun/shade and he loves it. He's safe from the S. Carolina sun, which is brutal this time of year. Love watching your family's gardening shows on QVC. bought many plants from you all!

hey! thank you for you kind words! thats great to hear. oak leaf hydrangea are native to SE USA so you are in the perfect spot to grow them. i also planted about 5 in my garden this spring

Got my Jetstream oakleaf hydrangea from Roberta's Garden yesterday. Planted it today. The specifications said in a sunny area. I put it where it would get about 6 hours of sun a day. I can't wait to watch it grow. I love all hydrangeas.

Thanks for the tip re: label and date plant!! Ihavent done that and i get a surprise when i don't see what i thought was supposed to be there, I have hydrangeas here in Atlantic Beach NY but not the oak leaf type. They bloom in puffy balls of different colors Thanks again!!!

Great video! I have an older one I just discovered in an over grown garden. It’s blooming and beautiful. I’d love information on pruning. Spring or fall and where on the bush. I’m really wanting this to do well. New subscriber 😊

Hello 👋Devin! When we planted our plants of hydrangeas, roses, forsythia and a fig tree we added humus/Compost and potting soil as we have heavy clay and very rocky soil. We live in Tennessee near Tennessee River which is 7a I believe. Are our plants going to be ok? They are going on 3rd season. They all look good but the forsythia have never really grown in 3 years. My husband actually has to use a power auger and pick to break up the rock. My Dad had same issue and he lived down the road from us. Over the years he really worked his land with a tiller and pick because of the rocks. He never amended his soil for Mom's roses and they didn't do as good as ours. They lived her over 20 plus years. Hi Ann, thanks for your wonderful question. It's a bit of a new idea that has been circulating the hort world for the past few years - not amending soil for shrubs and trees. the idea is that by using shrubs that are either native to your region or suitable to your climatic conditions, they will do better without amending soil in the long run. however, as they are young plants they may do well growing in the amended soil, and even beyond, as you can attest to. i wouldn't be concerned about the plants that you have planted. perhaps in the future, simply adding compost and mulch on top of the newly planted plants will suffice. but i understand the challenges planting in heavy clay/rocky situations, i also have the same type of soil. i will continue to experiment and relay my findings in my videos. thanks!

I just bought a Ruby Red Slippers in zone 7A Kentucky. Where I’m planting it will be mostly shade in the morning and then the hot late afternoon/evening sun. I can’t find anything specific about it being able to handle those conditions. I also do not know if I should add acidic or Ph soil or just use our good ole Kentucky clay. Help, please!!

The soil should be fine. You’ll need to baby it with water for the first season so it can handle the hot afternoons. But after it should be happy!

Hi Devin, i hope you see this. I have a Ruby Slipper. Planted her late April. She was doing fine until humidity/ harsh afternoon sun hit. I believe its heat stress. Ive moved it to a shadier spot. The leaves wilted terribly. The evening and morning hours, the leaves do perk back up. Is there anything else i need to do in order for hee to survive? shes in a shadier location. Less than 4 hrs of sun. Help!

Yes it sounds like even still too much sun. You could give it a thick layer of leaf compost to keep it cool. Otherwise more shade may be necessary

Last fall, I planted an oakleaf hydrangea gatsby moon, full sun, in a newly created flower bed. I have clay soil as well and this will be my 3 rd summer. Planted many shrubs both in flower bed and elsewhere in my yard. In all cases, anything I planted in the yard outside of a flower bed, is easily half the size. There’s even a bigger difference with the lilacs. I will probably move the 2 planted in the ground as they are struggling, combination of lack of sun and nutrients. I am finding my whole yard has poor soil, on top of rubble. I am hoping to add many various hydrangeas to fill in under our mature trees and hide the neighbours. I already have a few pee gee ones. I am after largest species and toughest. I am in zone 5 in canada = US zone 4

Yes absolutely, shrubs competing with turf really saps a lot of nutrients and water

Hello- we planted an Alice two fall’s ago but haven’t seen blooms yet. I am hoping this summer. I did read that some big leafs take longer to establish themselves. Any truth to that?

As I grow them more I’ve noticed they can be a bit finicky at the start, but by years 4-5, any surviving plants will be there for the long haul
