If you do plasma cutting at home, have you ever heard of or used a plasma cutter standoff roller guide? If not, then let me tell you a little about it. This basic tool can be a useful tool to guide or hold your LG 40 or Pt 31 plasma torch in place, especially when cutting a circle. With a straight metal rod that you can fix at the center of your metal sheet and acts as the movable arm, at the other end of the rod is the adjustable roller guide that you can slip your LG 40 or Pt31 plasma cutter torch in.
Since the LG 40 plasma torch is being suspended by the guide with wheels while the center guide prevents the roller guide and the torch from veering out of the circle line, the whole process of cutting a circle can be easy. This plasma circle cutting guide, though cheap, can help beginners to produce perfect circles from metal sheets.
Cutting circles with a plasma cutter without any guide can be very daunting. For example, even if you draw a perfect circle and follow that line to cut, a slight twitch of your arm can pull your hand that holds the plasma torch and the circle would not be perfect anymore. But with the plasma cutter standoff roller guide, there’s no slip of the torch since it is being held securely by the roller guide and the center metal rod.
However, as you can see in this video, this is the first time I have used this plasma circle cutting guide so even though I have produced a half-circle, the cut result was rather rough which means using the roller guide requires practice. But since the principle of cutting circles with a plasma cutter should be guided by a tool I came up with the idea of using a wire.
With a flux core wire and a screwdriver, I measured the distance of the center of the circle to the edges of the metal sheet, made a circle wire with the flux core wire, insert the screwdriver into the center hole of the metal sheet and slip the wire over it while the other end holds the LG 40 plasma torch in place. Now I have made myself a simple circle guide that’s easy to maneuver. So in principle, the wire and the plasma cutter standoff roller guide can work in the same manner.
