Thanks for that, yeah practicing trowel technique with that mix is definitely the best way to start in my opinion, the fact the gear stays usable all day, and can be knocked off even when bone dry is what makes it great for practicing, you can also practice with bonding and finish on top of it, then easily knock the whole lot off, that way you wont wreck any of your walls,👍its the way I was taught 35 years ago. Many thanks for answering as I have just built an oak framed barn that needs the ground floor floating, and I can’t get any hard wall, so although I’ve not used sand/cement before, I might give it a go. Would you add any lime to the mix?
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 4 жыл бұрын
You could but it's not essencial, if your going to skim it after I'd suggest putting water proofer in the render, then you'll have no suction issues when it comes to applying the finish, you need to let the render dry for at least 24 hours. Make sure theres not too much suction in your walls before you render them or it will dry to quick, and crack

Proberbly 4-1 when I'm working in an empty property in the winter with no heating I often up the cement quantity to help it go off quicker, I also mix a bit of soft sand with fine sharp, which seems to be back on the shops, unlike bonding or finish

Hi Eric. Thanks for the channel. Looking forward to learning from it. I just bought a 1950's building which has had the top half of the plaster painted and the bottom half wall papered. I plan on having a go at skimming this myself. A quick question, is it possible to use the lime and sand mix on the old plaster there? Will it stick i guess for me to practice on or will it not be possible? Again thanks for the videos. Excited to watch them. Been watching some on you tube with sponge floating (2 coats) and plasiflex trowels. Any thoughts? Regards Lee
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee thanks for comment and subscribing, the sand and lime practice mix wont really stick to a plastered finish, ideally it needs to be some bricks or blocks, if there isn't some old brickwork in the house, you could do as I've done in that video which is buy 6 breeze blocks and just stack them on top of each other against a wall and practice on those, one of my other subscribers practiced with the lime mortar and said when he then came to using the real plaster the job went really well! The good thing about the lime mortar is when you're finished, and its dry, its easy to knock off so you can use the wall to keep practicing. Regarding sponge floating I will do that on a rendered wall, but dont really like doing it on finish, if your not used to doing it you can end up in a right old mess, and it takes longer and in my professional opinion it's not really required, most plasterers that work on site dont use a sponge float on their finish. Hope this helps, thanks again. Eric

So i managed to get hold of 20 bags of finish yesterday. Yay. I had a go on my practice plaster (lime and sand) and it just sucked the finish dry with 5 minutes and it all ended up cracking it was that dry. I guess I should have put PVA before hand. Even the mix in the bucket lasted about 20 minutes. My end result was terrible. Thick in some places, holes in others. I think I played with it way too much trying to get it flat in the beginning and filling holes etc. Another day practicing and it is going to be hot. I am pretty sure I have my trowel techniques down to a T
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 4 жыл бұрын
Ok Lee, few things, when your knocking up your practice mix, to kill the suction you need to add some waterproofer, the one I use is a plasticiser and waterproofer combined, it's a false economy not to buy it, the render you put on your wall needs to be between at least a quarter of an inch thick, maybe half inch even, it's best to let the area you want to put skim over dry over night you can PVA it then too, but with waterproofer in it you shouldn't have to. When you mix the finish make sure your adding powder to water, then get it on the wall, DON'T mess with it AT ALL, just get it on! if you have waterproofer in the render, then once the finish is on, you should be able to touch it with your finger and it will still be wet, it's only as starts to dry can you begin to get it smooth, dont skim to big an area while you're learning, 1 square meter only, mabey 2. You wont get it smooth in one go, if it's too wet leave it alone! And keep touching it with your finger to see if it's getting drier, if, and only if your trowel starts to drag the finish, only then can you splash or spray a little water on it so the trowel slides, DON'T over do the water. Let me know how you get on👍

So I have been playing around with this mix on my garage wall which is breeze blocks. Think I had my mix a little too thick to begin with as it kinda just fell off the wall. Thinned it down a bit and it was better. Got the hand of the trowel and hawk technique quite quick. I found it hard to get an even spread. Especially when coming in from the top, sides etc. Mine is just a flat wall so I am using the mortar joints as places to start. My mix also started drying out quite quick so I knocked it off the wall 4 times and made it a little wetter every time. The 1st coast was going on around 8mm thick then I was basically doing 3mm. The 3 was a lot easier to work with. I have really enjoyed playing with it today. Going to hack it off now and have another play tomorrow. Thanks again Eric. P.s. when adding the muck to the wall, roughly how much do you overlap the existing? When overlapping, this bit is going to be thicker than the rest, how do we trowel that in, is it more muck or just trying to smooth what is there? Thank you
@ThePlasterer

It's great your getting stuck in,👍👍 you might want to add a little bit more plasticiser and or lime to the mix to make it a bit more spreadable, I've just got in from work so glancing at your ps I dont quite understand your question, but might be coz I'm tired, will take another look at it this evening. Keep up the good work!

Hi Eric. Thanks for the reply. I think I didn't add enough lime then as I tried the 5 to 1 ratio. I didn't put any plasticiser in as someone did comment the lime worked well as a plasticiser. When I remix the stuff tomorrow I shall add a bit more lime to it. I used plastering sand, would that make a difference to the mix by any chance? I think I worked a little too hard today as I have a saw wrist. Looking forward for another day of practice tomorrow. Thanks again for the videos and advice. I really appreciate it.
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 4 жыл бұрын
@@leeedwards3783 if theres no plasticiser then you definately need more lime, but do yourself a favour and get some plasticiser and use half building sand, and half plastering sand and lime, it'll spread like butter and put less strain on your Wrist, it'll probably still be soft enough to use again the following day if you still have it in a bucket. Keep me posted👍if your wrist aches badly, rest it for a day

@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer Жыл бұрын
Hi Hazqil, like most things, some people learn faster or slower than others, the only way you know when your ready to do it for money for someone else is when you feel confident enough to do so, and how good and faster you become is only developed over time, if you learn to do a whole wall well but it takes you a whole day, then it is not wise to offer to do a whole room, including ceiling, for a customer who will probably expect the whole job finished within 2 days, 3 maximum. Good luck, let me know how you get on

You seem pretty knowledgeable... FYI Lime works as a plasticiser, Plastering sand is preferred sand for render (building sand is too weak and hard to work with) Measuring with a bucket trowel although quick and easy isn’t accurate for large work, I’m not criticising you because this was just a demo. One bag of sand one shovel full of lime is nice way of gauging for small work ib my experience.. roughly 5 to 1 depending on the shovel. You also didn’t mention; Dashing, wetting/bonding a surface to control suction and aid adhesion of finish, render ratios to suit different brick/block types or using a straight edge. Probably more stuff too I’m guessing you did a crash course and picked up the rest as you went along... I’m sure your works good but should you really be tutoring ?
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 4 жыл бұрын
Although I'm using a bucket trowel for this small batch, for "practicing" it was still 5_1, yes I do know that lime is a plasticiser, when dashing, if you have enough water proofer in your scratch coat you dont need to wet or PVA the first coat. They didn't do crash courses 35 years ago, apprenticeships yes
