Plastering For Beginners

Күн бұрын

In todays video I’m trying something totally new to me. VENETIAN PLASTERING!
This has always been a major decorative feature in history with the Italians leading the way with this amazing product. But despite it being around forever…I’ve never tried it.
That’s until today!!
I’ll walk you through my first attempt at Venetian plastering…warts and all!
I’ll show you the full process and outline how my results went with this new product. I’m obviously a plasterer so I know how to use a trowel. But I must say that this is a totally different ball game. It’s like comparing rugby to football.
It plays by different rules and there’s a lot of differences between the world I know to the world of Venetian. So this video was a major learning curve for me - and you can watch it all here. So tuck in if this is something you want to get into because I’ll reveal that Venetian plastering isn’t as easy as it looks!
If you like this video then please subscribe because I’ll be continuing this journey. And I vow to master it so stay tuned because you can watch me learn the game from scratch.
You can check out our website for more advice on plastering. The links below:

Cheers.

Good work, but for me when I use Venetian plaster I work the trowel in smaller arcs, in only one direction , then for the finish coat I don't try and cover to much of an area, only half meter at a time, giving it time to pick up so you can polish it, getting a good contrast with colours and pattern takes practice, and then finding your own unique style, best way to describe it, it's a bit like using oil paints to bring out the textures, well done I hope this was helpful

Hey Blaine , I have been doing VP for 25 years and recently took on some lime plaster work. You got me through it with success and great respect for you and your trade. You are going to find out soon that with VP you are limited only by your imagination. For a smooth glossy VP finish I would use a bit more product on the trowel, Constantly vary your application marks in you early coats. Train at staying random Your final coat you should not be adding texture. It should be a tight coat, 100% coverage. This is me just taking a guess at what you were aiming for. Keep inspiring. I look forward to seeing your work evolve. Thanks John

Thank you mate! Advice is invaluable so I really appreciate any you can give. I’ve had a few more go’s with your tips in mind and I must admit that I’m getting a much more consistent finish. Not perfect...but better! Any advice I’d appreciated and thank you for sharing! Cheers and all the best with your Plastering

You need to apply with a trapazoidal trowel very tight, and then use the small polishing trowel like the one you have to work the material when it's ready. Usually apply 1m2 at a time then come back on it for its first varnish then continue on. Then go nuts at the wall at the end. It's fairly easy material but it's a killer on the arms !!!trapazoid trowel makes all the difference trust me. Ive been doing venetian and marmorino for a long time now as it's huge in Australia now

I've been doing doing it for 15 months now. On your final coat try doing slightly larger strokes and put a bit more plaster on your trowel, but not loads. Lots of small strokes will result in a very busy looking finish. Make the trowel strokes more random and don't do them all the same direction. Do some horizontal, some vertical, some diagonal, some wiggly and try to arc the stroke every so often. Random is key. Don't lay on too much at a time like you did in the video before you burnish as it dries quick. Darker colours dry even quicker so beware. The tearing of the plaster occurred because the plaster had dried out a bit too much before you started burnishing and then you ended up over working it to get the shine resulting in the tearing. Start burnishing a bit sooner starting off lightly and slowly and then getting firmer as it dries out more. But don't massacre it lol. Hope this helps.

This is a massive help...thank you mate. It’s becoming clear that I burnished late so I’ll definitely apply smaller sections next time. And good advice about application. It did look busy in my opinion so I’ll try that also. Thank you for your advice! I really appreciate it. I’ll be posting another one soon 👌

Prime first to be applying superlachido then a lime coat then add ink to your next tub but make sure u have more on your trowel don’t be scared to use it if that makes sense try to overlap slightly with your trowel with no missis as the effect will start to show when burnishing then use the mop over it with some nice wax and do the same again with burnishing the more u burnish the better for me

Burnish time depends on the product. Grasscello by Beri calce can be burnished instantly as it’s put on. Where as Elite Venezia by Art’e Style is an acrylic based Venetian plaster. You can apply the top coat and can burnish it while it drys days after it’s application so it all depends

Great to see you start this Blaine, it's an art form when you look into it and the possibilities are endless. Some great tutors online, my favourite is Ronald Layman, very good guy, check him out of you've not seen him already. However!, I really like your way of teaching as it was the best for me to learn plastering from you (done quite a few jobs now and it's gone very well) from your way of going through the work. It's exceptionally detailed. I would have liked to seen this first attempt fully dry, has it dried a lot lighter like the first coat?

Your trowels too small , you need to put a bit more on and spread it better. Not thick applications and don't keep going over it until the final coat because you will burnish it and the second coat won't stick Your mindset should be to cover as quick as possible with larger arched strokes from right to left starting in the top left corner as your right handed , after the first base coat

Fair play for giving it a bash on video - Plenty of patience .... Not sure I appreciate the purpose of Venetian Plastering, other than the hardness and marbelising, I remember back in the 70's when 'The Spanish Look' was all the Rage!! ..... What a nightmare ?? .... Did a WHOLE Church Conversion in it once .... OOPS!! ... I bet it cost future owners a FORTUNE to get shot of it 😄
