Here is a tutorial on how to make sleeping mattresses out of recycled plastic bags.
Hi everyone! My name is Trisha Sindhu, a senior at West-Windsor Plainsboro High School North. This project started as my Girl Scout Gold Award, but has now turned into something bigger. I have received an overwhelming amount of help and people who want to get involved, so I decided to make a tutorial for those who want to take on this project. It may appear to be a difficult process, but once you get the hang of it, it really is simple. I am using a size Q17 crochet hook (15.75 mm), also please make sure you are using RECYCLED plastic bags to complete the mat, as that it the whole effort of the project. If you do complete a mat, please try to donate it to HomeFront (nonprofit that works to fight homelessness in New Jersey). Thanks for watching and help me fight homelessness and excessive plastic waste use!

Very well demonstrated - AND I'm glad you made it a point to mention USED plastic bags. Grabbing new ones simply defeats the Earth friendly purpose of the project. I too loved the idea of saving the handles to make pillows - Ushta-te!!

Thank you for this. I'm homeless and disabled and this was saved me from sleeping on straight concrete for months. This idea is genius and it recycles the unwanted plastic that's usually discarded and is harmful to our ecosystem and wildlife. I commend you and others with this idea. God bless you all for helping. Continue your hard work. It does make a difference. Thank you all so much.

Awesome I loved your step-by-step instructions. We are hoping to make these mats for the Homeless through a non-profit organization that actually passes them out in Camden, NJ and Philadelphia too in time for Christmas 2021.

Good job demonstrating! Thank you! I saw a plastic bag purse on reddit and was curious about the basic starting process of the bag-yarn and weaving.

May I please ask if these are really comfortable to sleep on. I say no. They have to get hard as can be after a couple nights. I just don't see how this piece of thin plastic can hold an adults weight and stay comfy. Please explain

This is an incredible design and a great idea for a sleeping mat! However, You are NOT combating homelessness with this project, you are making the homeless more comfortable in their homelessness. I commend you for your thoughtfulness and ingenuity, but you cannot “help” those who do not want to be helped.

Negative Nellie. Thank you, Trisha, for reusing/recycling plastic bags and for providing homeless people a cozy(ier) place to rest at night...whether they are to be "helped" or not. This is citizenship at its best...kudos!

What about our milton men and women who are now homeless because they couldn't get help . Not everyone is homeless because of drugs ect what about children who's parents. Made bad decisions

I was homeless off and on for over 3 years. I was working two jobs and attending the University of Virginia Which at the time was the number one Public University in the country. I often went for days without food. I was not doing any drugs or alcohol or making any bad financial decisions. It simply is too hard to try to attend University to improve your status in life because guess what you do want to be helped and you want to help yourself and you want to pull yourself up by your non-existent bootstraps when you don't even own boots. Stop making assumptions about people. The large majority of the homeless are invisible and her homeless because of the high cost of rent along with the requirement of a two months deposit and low wages

Wow @pantherNKS that’s incredibly presumptuous and ignorant of you. Most of the people I work with would rather have the security of a home then sleep outside. Sadly this isn’t an option for so many reasons.
