Plastic Chemicals Killing Humans?
Phthalates Linked to 100,000 Premature US Deaths: Everything You Need to Know About These Toxic Household Chemicals.
A new study found that common household chemicals, known as phthalates, contribute to more than 100,000 deaths a year in adults aged 55 to 64. These premature deaths have known reasons, especially heart disease.
This peer-reviewed study published in the journal ‘Environmental Pollution’ also estimates an approximate $40 - 47 billion lost annually in economic productivity due to these deaths.
What are these phthalate chemicals, aka plasticizers?
Why are they toxic?
How can you minimize your exposure to them?
Here’s everything you need to know about phthalates (also known as plasticizers).
What are the types of phthalates, and where are they found?
In the United States, phthalates are found everywhere. Take a walk in a store, and chances are, you’ll see tons of products with these toxins in them. These include certain children’s toys, clothing, food storage containers, shampoos, lotions, soaps, hair spray, etc. These chemicals are so common that they are known as ‘everywhere chemicals.’ Globally, we consume more than three million tons of phthalates a year!

Some phthalates have been banned or restricted in children’s toys but are pretty common in food packaging, makeup, and other household items.
There are two high-level categories of phthalates. They are Low-molecular-weight phthalates and high-molecular-weight phthalates:
• Low-molecular-weight phthalates are often found in shampoos, lotions, and personal care products. They act as binding agents and help preserve the fragrance in these products.
• High-molecular weight phthalates are ingredients in manufacturing plastics for flooring, food wrap, and other applications. They help to soften the plastic.
Why are phthalates dangerous?
Why are phthalates dangerous? The new study is the first to link phthalates directly to death. The researchers used a nationally representative sample of 5300 adults aged 20 years or older. The lead author, Leonardo Trasande, MD, MPP, said, “Until now, we have understood that the chemicals connect to heart disease, and heart disease, in turn, is a leading cause of death, but we had not yet tied the chemicals themselves to death.”
Phthalates interfere with hormones in our bodies. The chemicals have been known to lower testosterone levels. Low testosterone means many things, but one of those things is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. People with a higher concentration of phthalates in their urine had a greater probability of dying from heart disease.
Daily exposure to these chemicals causes a buildup of toxins and can induce oxidative stress. This oxidative stress can lead to various issues like cell and tissue damage, premature aging, and chronic conditions like obesity both in children and adults. Not just obesity, but diabetes, but breast cancer and thyroid cancer. Lab studies have also linked phthalates to endometriosis and even possibly infertility. It’s important to note that this study did NOT find a higher risk of dying from cancer due to a greater concentration of phthalates.
For this study, the researchers analyzed data collected from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2001-2010. This survey was administered by the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC. During this survey, participants provided urine samples to measure phthalate metabolite concentrations.
How do we accumulate phthalates in our bodies?
Phthalates can get into our bodies through our skin when we inhale them, or when we eat them. food is the primary source of phthalate exposure. It can also happen when children crawl around and put their hands in their mouths after touching things with phthalate particles.
How long do phthalates stay in our bodies?
Once phthalates enter our bodies, they’re processed in two phases and then excreted through our urine and feces. Previously, researchers believed that phthalates cleared rapidly from our body through urine, and the chemicals did not accumulate in our bodies. Further research has shown that this is not entirely true.

There was a report several weeks ago that testing on very small children showed high concentrations of plastics in their bodies even at very young ages. Very intensive research is going on for many years on what microbes are in the intestines. It seems we need to develop some microbes as food that will digest plastics for us! A study out of England reported that half the world's population probably has a microbe that creates calories for us to get us through times of famine and that we ought to believe the obese people who claim they eat no more than thin people. The research project put 2000 people on 1200 calorie diets. Half lost weight. Half didn't. All those who didn't shared exactly 1 microbe that NOBODY who lost weight had in their intestines. People eat sugar and salt that are poisons in the quantities we eat. Now, we partially digest plastics.

But as I recall from an elementary science class, once any new worse problems are created by science, scientists must devise safer, healthier alternatives. My father was a chemical company production process engineer, who at various points, as when they found that chloroform as a coolant was carcinogenic, came up with a safer alternative coolant. Industrial processes and products that menace mass extinction need stop, pause to allow research, rethink and reset to safer alternatives, as for fuel. Great article Dr. Mike || Since I was age 3 I was dealing with debilitating migraine. Fifty-years later the cause was "chemically enhanced prepared food, cosmetics, cleaning products practically everything including medications! Prescribed heavy duty meds causing vision, speech inpediment, but never give any to prevent the migraines Also prescribed self-injection Imetrix - migraine gone in twenty minutes no side effects I don't use plastic for freezer storage I use glass canning jars I only consume fresh foods, chicken, fish, vegetables and fruits and Do not take medications at all and question preparation when eating out Today at age 79 I have no health issues and look age 60 . . . Thank you for sharing this import health concern NY-USA

Would love to see research on plastics and autism. In the 60’s when baby bottles were switched from glass to plastic, an even larger to plastic Took place for all packaging. Soon after autism was rampant in children and still is today. I believe it affects in uterine fetuses and results in autism.

There is rational concern about harmful chemicals based on scientific data and then there is irrational chemophobia (and GM-phobia); based in antiscience and the naturalistic fallacy. Most vanilla flavoring is synthetic and they use precursor chemicals extracted from burned wood and fossil fuels; that article was about potentially reducing the environmental harm from the production of vanillin; while also reusing some of our waste plastic (rather than just dumping it).

How come in other countries they have vanilla sugar but in U.S. we have to use the flavoring ??? 🤔
@LENZ5369
@LENZ5369 2 жыл бұрын
@@sharonjuarez7093 you can get vanilla sugar anywhere -its just flavouring and/or partially extracted vanilla pods; that is mixed with normal white sugar. You can make it yourself with your used pods. And 99% of all vanilla flavouring used worldwide; is synthetic vanillin -everyone uses the flavouring, the pods are too expensive and too environmentally harmful for mass use.

It's great that your platform brings this to the attention to many who may not have been aware previously to this information that's been around for quite sometime. This isn't new news unfortunately. Your platform "could" potentially bring about change. I use "could" Cautiously bc your not the first person with a platform to showcase this. I ask what will you do to bring about change that's not surface level chatter but deeper and more meaningful?

The fact that these everywhere chemicals are everywhere, that they have existed (or at least been widespread) only within the last half century or so, and that human life expectancy has increased over this same time period argues very strongly to me that they're not as harmful as this guy says. Besides, it is VERY hard to establish a cause and effect for "everywhere chemicals". It would be better to discuss the merits and shortcomings of the peer reviewed publication and get a better sense for just how good is the underlying science.

This is good to be aware of. Thanks for the information. I eat a whole food plant based diet to avoid heart disease but even much of the produce I buy (for example lettuce) comes in plastic. With Covid19 stores would not let me bring in cloth bags for produce so I started to use more plastic as that was considered safer. Hopefully with vaccines we can return to reducing plastic especially around food.
