Don't throw out the lid and bottom of the drum! Instead cut another circle out 2-3 inches high from the lid / base and then snip into your loop and bend it out into a spiral and add the two together to make an internal screw to move material down the trommel.

Great build! I can not help but wonder if you would have been happier if you had built it out of steel drums?
@BSpotBuilds

Steel drums don't have the thickened rim that the cog gear runs on, and I think it would be very loud as the rocks rolled around in them.

Put it in a tank with water the rocks and metal will sink to the bottom and remove them with a screw. - or - Use an air density separator. Basically blow the lighter material away with an air stream.

Do you have any thoughts on alterations if someone chose to use steel 55 gallon drums in lieu of plastic?Also the wood support system seem very heavy. Do you have any thoughts on changing to aluminum or steel bar? Any advice you can give is appreciated.
@BSpotBuilds
@BSpotBuilds 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on what your putting through, if it contains large rocks the steel drums will dent and distort rapidly. Wall thickness on modern drums isn't what it used to be. Plastic flexes as the aggregate bounces around inside and absorbs the knocks. Also the plastic drums are loud when running, steel would be real loud. As for the frame I used wood because I have lots of it, steel would work well, aluminum will cost a lot to build a structure stiff enough. Again it depends on what you separating, how fast the drums are turning and how much you load the screen.
@jamessalerno6582
@jamessalerno6582 7 жыл бұрын
Wow, great advice, you make a solid point about the noise. I'll be building it for mining on a dry claim. My aggregate and sort is a little smaller than what you have. I just have a lot of throughput. I think what I'll do is go for plastic with holes drilled to the equivalent of a 10 & 20 mesh sort. You've convinced me on plastic drums. The price tag of plastic is nicer than metal too. Thanks again.

Do you have wooden threads on the inside to move the rocks through the barrels ?
@BSpotBuilds

Just on the exit of the last barrel because the drums budge in the middle It helps move the rocks out of the last drum.

Awesome machine! How steep did you make the chute from the rock screen to the first drums? And did you set the drums at a slope?
@BSpotBuilds
@BSpotBuilds 6 жыл бұрын
The chute is just plywood with sheet metal on it. The drums are on a slope, angle is dependent on how fast you want the aggregate to move through.

My drums are still running, occasionally when I need rock or sand. The holes in the rim area are slightly elongated this could be fixed if it becomes an issue by wrapping it with steel flat bar. I replaced the drive cogs with steel because I needed to go to a smaller wheel to increase the torque. The steel ones are a little worn on one side and can be flipped around to change the drive side of the pins.

I love your design and would love to build one. I'd like to go shorter, mobile, and dry. You have two three barrel trommels. One seems to be sorting fines the other 2 inch rock. My question is: Why didn't you just do both in one 3 barrel unit? Any ideas on how I should go about sorting multiple rocks with 2-3 barrels? Would love to accomplish fines and 10-20-40 mesh rock, prior to dropping my tailing from a shorter barrel trommel. I know I am asking a lot but any thought would be appreciated.
@BSpotBuilds
@BSpotBuilds 8 жыл бұрын
+Kimberly Vanilla --In my design I prescreen out anything >5" with the bars when dumping the load. Then remove fines in the fist section with 1/2 inch holes. The next section has 2 inch holes so I get 1/2 - 2" out of it. The overs that come out the end are 2 - 5". I used three barrels per section so that I can use my back hoe to remove the sized rock from each section and its bucket is just under 8' wide so I needed three to keep the piles separated. You can make a much shorter screen and it will work fine. It all depends how you are feeding and removing the sized material. Shorter also will limit throughput.
