That "offset cab" was unique to Mack and appeared on the DM800 and DM600 models. I believe it gave the driver better visibility in construction areas, where these trucks ruled for decades. Under the hood ... I can't recall if these were fiberglass hoods or if the were aluminum or steel. Painting the underside a dark, soft grey (Model Master Euro Grey) would not be inappropriate, nor would the addition of insulation. Great job - your patience brought you success.😉

Canadian viewer. I just finished this kit. Yup, there are a few hiccups. I look at when this kit was originally designed and patterns made. It was before CAD, it was when dies were not cut by lasers, etc. I grew up with kits like this in the 70's and 80's....you learned to problem solve and try and fix things as well as you could. Once complete though, I think it does a good job of representing the original. My advice is to take your time, test fit, test fit and test fit.

This kit looks like the one made by Ertl that I built about forty years ago. I also built their Mack DM-800 Constructor and the International Transtar. They were some pretty decent kits. They were also some of the trucks I drove. At one time, I wanted to build a collection of every truck I drove, but never got around to doing it. It would have taken a lifetime, because it was the real ones that paid the bills, and left me little time for much else!

Thanks for a great video! I've had no issues with this kit until the fitting of the cab on the chassis. I too looked at installing the hood first, cause as you say, that's the key component to make sure the cab sits right. I too had to add some extra sprue to the pipe connecting the turbo exhaust port at the engine to the muffler canister. Also, last minute I noticed there was nothing in the instructions to putty up the two cab roof holes if you don't want to install the AC unit on top. So, I ended up installing the AC unit. Looks not bad. I liked the fact that the Bulldog and MACK emblems were provided. OH, one last thing.....Drive shafts and the fifth wheel molded in chrome??? I don't drive truck in real life but the fifth wheel gets a lot of grease and gets scraped by the trailer underside. So, other than a show truck, who installs a chrome fifth wheel? Your video was really helpful Richard. THANKS AGAIN!!

I drove a DM-600 Mack for many years, the underside of the hood on everyone of the trucks I drove poorly painted in body color, like an after thought. On a couple of the trucks they had a spray on insulation, looked like a bed liner. Hope that helps. The DM model Mack was also known as a J model, because the cab was offset to one side, they were narrower than you would think, 2 grown men could just barely fit..lol

Hello, I built two of these kits when they first came out in the early 70's from MPC, when I was a kid. I did not have any problems with fit at all. The kits went together beautifully. I am happy to see this kit is molded in white and black like the first runs a long time ago. If I build this kit now that I am a better builder. I will have a lot of fun with it. It will come out so much better than it did years ago. Even then it came out good. I do a lot of detail painting to enhance all the detail. The kit looks well done and should go together fine. I think that you as you said, you do not usually build trucks. I have built so many that I lost count. LOL. I mostly built trucks because you can build ten of the same kit and use different bodies on the back and have ten completely different trucks. I never have trouble building any kits. Must be because of all the years of doing it. The reissue of the Dodge 700 cabover gas engine truck with opening doors went together great. In Vids I looked at They glued the doors shut because they could not get them to work right. I got mint to work fine. I test fit everything and make adjustments where needed to get the fit just right. I enjoy the working features. I make all mine with doors opening, steerable front end, and rear tandems working. I paint them with multi-color paint jobs. I guess I could start using my You Tube channel and make some Vids. What I find the most fun is reworking the kits to add working features. Of course being an Engineering buff I enjoy figuring out how to do it. I really like your final job. It looks great. I'm sorry you had some problems with fit. The Orange you used is a good choice, with the black chassie. Nice job. From what I saw on your vid is the commitment to finish it and the relief. at the end, LOL. I would like to see you build the AMT or MPC Mack DM 800 kit. They never fixed the front end. It is to wide. But this one you just did is a lot easier. You think you pulled your hair out on this one. LOL. The challenge I enjoy. Got to have refined skills to build some not all. but some. The AMT truck kits are easy to build. Of course some are harder than others. Keep up the great vids. I look forward to more.

I bought this kit 3 years ago. It is still NOT FINISHED. Have been building kits for 50 years or so I have only encountered a few kits that were just stubborn. This Mack Tractor was one of the biggest PIA’s I have ever built. If you did not know the meaning of “ KIT BASHING” this MPC kit give you a great example! As in your video, I encountered the same fit issues that you ran into. It really surprised me of the super crappy fit of about 80% of this kit. The ONLY fit that actually fit and looked good is the hood to body, and yes the only way to preserve that fit is to put it on the hinges first. All in all MPC has offered a decent variety of kits since the late 50’s. But I have noticed over the years that MPC kits are just a notch lower in quality and fit than the average kit. I had a very good friend that worked for MPC in Mount Clemens Michigan in the early to mid eighty’s. I would go to the factory on Gratiot Ave and actually pick kits off the assembly line before they were even shrink wrapped , which was a pretty cool experience. I grew up just a mile or so from the AMT factory in Roseville/ East Detroit. I would see many of the custom cars sitting outside of the building that AMT had reviewed for actual model production. The factory/ design building is still there after all these years ! Anyhow, very nice build from such a PIA kit, and yes my frame was tweeked in the rear also. What kind of paint do you use for your body colors? Looking forward to seeing more of your builds. Keep up the great work. Thanks, J.P.

Round2 seems to be mixing it up a little, I think. That Mack made a couple of appearances in an AMT box but I think it started life as an Ertl kit. Ertl was a part of AMT at one time and Round2 likely owns the molds and the licenses. In my opinion, Ertl kits were superior to AMT kits

I think before I started doing something , I didn’t know about ,I would research a little about it.. me I drove a truck like this, and I built a semi truck 30 yrs ago real life and plastic,, it hard to put anything together you have no idea about, ie; the air cleaner is not the exhaust. Sounds like you over your head with big rigs. I would think this is a 4 or 5 level kit, whit h required you to know a little about the kit.... myself I hope I can get this kit and put a dump body on it.... keep on working on it, next one will be better... get a book or find one of a thousand videos on here. Sorry about the bitch, but thats what I got from the video
@Kryptosmaster4 жыл бұрын
So, not to sound sarcastic but I’m not about to go read an entire service manual on a semi truck before I tackle building a model of one. That’s just ridiculous. My intentions are to show the person who may be considering buying this kit what to expect. You don’t have to have any prior knowledge of a subject in order to purchase and build a kit. Yeah obviously I don’t know a lot about Semi trucks but I don’t know anything about battleships or spaceships either so should I not build one because of my lack of knowledge of them? Your logic makes no sense. As far as whining goes, sure I’m whining sometimes. I’m just expressing my emotions about building the kits. Some people like it, some people don’t. I’m not gonna change who I am just to please somebody else. There’s a million other videos out there if you don’t like mine.
@geraldgerhardstein21702 жыл бұрын
Na Rich, your NOT whining, you are sharing your experience and knowledge about a particular kit. Growing up I built A TON of kits from 1/72 armor, 1/35 military, Lord knows how many 1/24 25 cars and trucks. Large scale to include that old Renwal visible V8 and huge chassis, Ship models, many many aircraft, model rockets. I have been to many countries reviewed as many actual vehicles and equipment that you can imagine. Aberdeen proving ground armor museum and Including Russia. Even the historical museums display INCORRECT examples You name it, I have probably seen it, touched it, built it, smeared glue on the windshield……. However you are correct, you do not need to read a complete factory manual on kits you like and build. After all, has anyone taken a tour or know the wall color of the restrooms in the Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise lately ? Nice job. And presentation.
