The plastic straw ban has been a problem for a few years now. Many disabled people need single-use plastic straws, and the existing alternatives are not feasible for a variety of reasons. I've noticed that people expose their ableist attitudes and beliefs when the straw ban is discussed, which is why I post about this topic often on my social media. The ableism I've witnessed when having these discussions is upsetting and needs to stop. Hopefully, you find this video interesting and it teaches you all a lot 🤗

So articulate and reasoned as always. I have spent my entire life living with family members with various types of disability. I have seen them deal with such arguments in very positive and very negative ways. I admire how you always present a balanced viewpoint, making a strong statement while respecting others point of view. A turtle having an accident with a straw is sad, seeing a child have their lungs and trachea suctioned because they aspirated something is horrible. Every able person is already entitled to not use straws if they wish, a rule is not required. Banning straws is another instance of taking a reasonable concern to the illogical extreme.

Due to heart and back issues, I spend a lot of time lying down. Plastic straws are flexible, others aren’t

Very good reminder. Sometimes in our zeal to protect something (in this case, turtles and our environment), we can hurt something or someone else. Hopefully we can keep that in mind as we seek to support and respect all people and things!

Hi Sarah, I'm a plastic straw user. I have seizures including myoclonic seizures which are like involuntary spasms so I have non spill cups or cups will Safe-Sip lids which are non spill lids which you put a straw into. I also have muscle weakness and palsied wrists so I struggle to drink out of a cup so straws are a life line for me. Plastic straws as non-so-single -use, we wash and reuse them. With plastic straws there isn't an injury or allergy risk plus they are bendable. Recently however I have found some extra long silicon straws that I'm not allergic too. I have some small straw travel pods so I personally do carry around now one of my silicon straws 'just in case' as I was fed up of places not having straws at all, having soggy paper straws which non injury involved but I would still jab my mouth with them. Then wait for it, at my local hospital their café provides biodegradable straws. The problem with these are they are hard so injury risk but they also melt inside hot drink so as I'm sipping away on my latté inside my coffee my straw in melting meaning that theoretically I am drinking my melting straw! I really don't see there being a problem in café and restaurants etc having a stash of plastic straws to serve to those that ask for them - visible/invisible disability. I also think that the whole idea of straws on prescription is ridiculous. Like you I could talk a lot on this topic! Naomi

Metal straws or any solid material like PVC plastic, can be very dangerous to Human's. In the UK, a Woman at a Restaurant had Her own metal straw, and when She went for a refill she slipped and fell. The metal straw went through Her eye into Her brain, killing Her. It's cringy, but there it is.

My mom keeps straws around for me due to having fine motor skill issues. People who don’t have disabilities will never get it. It’s hard to have to fight for things like this that I need.

They’ve gone for the cheaper option as always, it’s the same here in the U.K.. What's wrong with a decent recycling system where the straws come from and go back to recycling? We all want to save the planet, the idea is to recycle plastics and not dump them in the ocean. I'll wager that the restaurant that wanted to save the planet had plastic water bottles, plastic food wrappers etc. The pre plastic straw argument doesn’t hold water (I know there’s a pun there), though we had some understanding of hygiene we weren't aware of Legionnaire's Disease etc.

I agree with everything you said. Plastic straws are necessary for people like you. The fact is that straws cause very little damage to the environment. This video is actually better than the other video you made on this subject. I'm glad you are doing well and I am looking forward to your next video.

Hey, I know this is an older video but I was wondering if you’d seen the marine biodegradable straws? They have them at a lot of restaurants in Orlando (which also has a plastic straw ban) And I think they’re quickly becoming more popular over paper straws because they mimic plastic straws very well and are hot beverage safe.

Too much "save the turtles" and not enough "100 corporations are causing 71% of our greenhouse gases" Agree with the last point. People won't give up gasoline, fast fashion, or meat, which all harm the environment far more than straws.

I don't mean to be rude and I'm genuinely just curious, but aren't plastic straws supposed to not be hot liquid safe? Again, this isn't meant to be hateful, I was just wondering. Thank you!

I like the idea of banning plastic bags. Since there are so many reusable ones that are way better and more sturdy. So that I think would make a big difference.

Plastic bags can be necessary for many disabled people as well. Individual efforts should not be the main focus but rather mega corporations.

I live with hand tremors and mild intellectual disability but I know there are worse than me out there who need this, my step aunts mother for example who is 97 and most alternatives won't get her medicine down. Before you plastic shill' me she can't get them down Le an abled person

You could compare this to removing face masks during covid for able bodied people. Just because single use masks are made from plastic does not mean they should be banned.

I’d rather mind my own business and let people live their lives, whether they use a straw or not. Only GOD can judge, nobody else.
