A *LOT* can be done to make 'dirty' plastics a great deal more recyclable. A - No more labels, period. Print the 'label' directly onto the plastic, using inks with either a very low vapor point so they can be boiled off, or based on the same plastic that it's being applied to. B - Single type plastic by product. No more mixing plastics in products. C - Much larger, easier to interpret 'recycling' identifiers. D - Reduce/eliminate plastic alloying (which is why there are hundreds of different 'types')

This statement means your don't know how plastic is made. Even recyclable plastics can only reprocessed 4 to 7 times. Then it goes to the landfill. And even during that 4 to 7 times virgin plastic is needed to form the strong enough bond to be used.
@Iquey
@Iquey 5 жыл бұрын
@@pauls5375 chemical companies and researchers have been working on a better plastic that can be depolymerized and repolymerized indefinitely. It takes proper chemistry and careful manufacturing. This is why the ibm guy is looking for polyester. It's a more versatile type of plastic. Other plastics like vinyl and PVC are terrible and more of a toxic one-time creation. It needs to be used only selectively in industries that can't use anything else.

@@Iquey yes, agree... Partially However due to how hydrocarbons are broken down this is not possible. This is my field. I work in hydrocarbon cracking and pyrolysis. The issue is that the Co polymers that are added to complete the bonds are then later categorized as contaminates. The economics of recycling aren't beneficial to companies. Once recycling can be monetized large scale will we see a transition to true plastic recycling. In Alberta, Canada there is a $ 0.25 bottle deposit on any 1 liter or larger PET pop bottle. This deposit gives an incentive for consumers to return bottles back to a bottle depot. If they throw their bottle out like garbage then they do not get their deposit money back. There is also a $0.06 recycling tax on each bottle. This tax pays for R&D of plastics recycling technology. So far this is paying off. We have one of the most extensive plastics recycling infrastructure in Canada. We are the only province to not export our plastic waste to the Philippine Islands. We are now in the process of scaling up our waste plastic recycling infrastructure to handle all of Western Canada. We will start with taking all that plastic waste other provinces thoughtlessly exported to the Philippines. Our bottle depots are just one type of system for segregating plastics. Our Clover Bar material processing center has specialized equipment for classifying other classes of plastics. We are the only province that does not export our plastic waste.

Agree 100%, companies that mass produce plastic and other non close loop recycling materials should be held accountable since they're only looking at the bottom line. Also, companies like Coke, Dole, Pepsi, etc should also be held accountable since they're just buying plastic materials so they can make a few cents more per bottle compared to aluminum or wax coated products. If you think about it, if they're saving a few cents for every bottle, and they sold a million of them, how much extra money are they making. Just do the math. You can go to the grocery store and buy some sliced fruit placed in a plastic container which is insane. If people want sliced up fruit or whatever then it should be in a aluminum can with an easy open top or wax coated box. It may cost 5 cents more but it's better than using plastic in the long run.

The mistake is putting "recyclables" in the same bin in the first place. It doesn't take a lot to teach people to recycle. Just telling them in media and mail where everything goes and why and providing those bins in places like stores' car parks and appartment buildings' yards and informing everyone where they are. It's easy to bring your trash back to the store the next time you go shopping or drop them in a few different bins when you take the trash out. It takes no effort at all after it becomes a habit. And it's pretty fun for kids to sort and throw in that huge bin specifically for that item. I know because I was a cub scout in Finland once. Recycling makes you feel good, responsible and mature.

So what happens to the stuff that isn't degrade by the catalyst? For instance a bunch of polyethylene in addition to the PET that doesn't get degraded. It goes into the filter? Seems like a low yield process that requires quite a bit of energy. Then they have to repolymerize everything in the end too? Separations at the recycle streams is the biggest problem

There is also another way of using plastics as a fuel, to power syngas generators. However there is some C02 which does escape in the process, but I have heard of a machine in Canada which takes C02 and turns it into fuel. Again there are ways, to deal with this issue, that none of you people are thinking of.

What I wanna know is how much water is consumed in this process and what is done to the stuff that is not pure plastic? Disposal methods and such.

What IBM is presenting here is in a few weeks being done by IONIQA in Geleen, Netherlands at an industrial process of 10kt/y. As far as I know the size of those facilities should be 50kt. But here we talk only about PET which is one of the easiest plastic qualities for recycling. The more mixed, the more difficult it is. Chemical recycling might be a key for recycling in the next decades...aside material recycling and incineration. We should prevent landfill.

for those saying no to single use, our world now is fast pace, the future pace is even faster, everything will be instantaneous. people dont like waiting, people dont like waiting, people dont like bringing stuff to bag their groceries or bringing their own tumbler for drinking let alone bringing their straw. its just ridiculous. The plastic packaging is even irreplaceable, nothing as cheap, moldable and can be sterilized as plastic. the solution should be cutting edge and based on technology. people lost their patience day by day, it s just different with decades ago. people should put their resources in R n D!

Somebody please help explain this to me if I am wrong - there is cheap biodegradable plastic available in the market - PLA plastic. Is that not the solution? I understand that older plastics still need to be recycled, which I think we can deal with over the long term (through chemical recycling), if we can first stop the problem getting worse every day by adding to the mountains on non recycled plastics.

We do not want to deal with the assignment of cost for the treatment and processing of the waste. The profit from creating what will become waste is kept privately yet the cost of waste disposal, treatment, conversion, is left for the public to bear.

May I ask if there is a problem with adding some form of glue to the mix and compressing the plastic into bricks and using them as a building material? That way you truly get to recycle it. Is it because there is no profit in it? I'd say plastic homes would be one way to solve a great deal of homelessness caused by lack of housing. Simply serialize the plastic by what ever means necessary - boiling, washing, etc; then via different strengths of blowing separate the hard plastics from the light. Compact them into a mold with some resin, bake under UV and Bob's your Auntie's living lover! Just putting it out there.

You can't just liquify it all and filter it? All of it goes in, only low melting plastic comes out,then higher melting and so on. All the stuff that's liquid boils off, all the stuff that's not plastic separates out, all the stuff that doesn't melt stays on top of the screen.

The interesting point about using the economics of things as a moral dictate is the undesirable outcomes. Sure, plastics are “cheap” to produce and put into circulation, but what do the economics matter when we’re choking in waste output? We should either apply a social hazard discount rate to the future negative value of trash output, or just realize that an economic framework need not be our only view on reasons for doing actions that benefit the common good
