Podcast Version -[coming soon]
This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This video focuses on Plato's dialogue, The Crito, and examines the arguments made by Crito, urging Socrates to take advantage of the plan and preparations made for him by his friends, and to flee the death sentence he soon faces in Athens.

Felt emotional when reading Crito. It's like approaching the end of a book or story, with that feeling that there'll be nothing from him after. Especially with how Crito's plight can be shared by the readers who liked Socrates. No matter how silly it sounds, I didn't want Socrates to die. He seemed like the only level-headed person in Greece at the time and now after I finish Plato, I'm going to read Xenophon just to capture more of Socrates image.

@@GregoryBSadler Can I ask you a question? Many people in my class got hung up on the fact that he willing went along with his death sentence. I felt like he was proving his innocence by not fighting back since he believed that in the afterlife the judgement there was the most important and there he would have to answer for his escape of judgement here. In your opinion, why did Socrates stay and embrace his impending doom?
@GregoryBSadler
@GregoryBSadler 2 жыл бұрын
There’s no “in your opinion” needed. It’s right there in the text, isn’t it?

@@GregoryBSadler Said like a true Philosopher. :) I guess I'm just wondering what's hard to understand about his choice. It seems rational in my mind what he chose, but the majority of the class felt differently. I guess I was just wondering why they felt that way.
@GregoryBSadler
@GregoryBSadler 2 жыл бұрын
A good bit of them probably didn't spend much time or attention on the text, to start. And people in your class likely have quite different values and priorities from Socrates and Plato
