The Washboard Resonators

2 жыл бұрын

This classic blues song by Robert Johnson is 32-20.
We show you how to play it with verse backing, variations and lead guitar / instrumental sections.
If you want to fingerpick the blues then this guitar lesson will get you going.
Played on the 1929 Gibson L-1 guitar. The same guitar RJ is seen with in the 1936 Hooks Brothers portrait.

Thanks!! He worked hard on music all his life and especially when he went to stay with Ike Zimmerman in 1930 after Virginia died giving birth to their child. His stuff is all fairly straightforward. Lots of standard tuning stuff lifted from ‘Life Saver Blues’ by Lonnie Johnson and slide stuff lifted from ‘Walking Blues’ by Son House! It’s easy to trace and learn!

I always thought the guitar in the photo booth portrait was a mid-1930s Kalamazoo - more affordable for a not very rich bluesman as well?
@TheWashboardResonators
@TheWashboardResonators 6 ай бұрын
The 1938 dime store pic is a KG14 Kalamazoo. In 2024 money they were around $370 new. The 1936 Hooks Brothers Portrait (Stripey suit) is a 1929 Gibson L-1. It’s very used and has a split in the body if you zoom in to the pic. It was a $700 ish guitar in 2024 money so I reckon he could have swung his used one, especially considering he had just got a recording session confirmed for somewhere in the $8000 (2024 value) area prior to the pic. I’m massively of the opinion he owned this even if briefly. By this point Bukka White owned his brand new Duolian, Scrapper Blackwell had his own L-0 and Tampa Red his Style 4 Tricone etc. RJ was a relatively successful freelance player with plenty of regular gigs and was a successful street musician. A used pro level guitar was well within his means. The flop houses, crime, jukes and humid weather would have all taken their toll on his instruments and I’d be surprised if he got more than a year out of any guitar.

Hey martyn, great lesson. I love these old blues songs, looking forward to more of these lessons! One remark I would like to make is the A chord around 10"45 you refer to as an "a minor 6" chord. Isn't that an A diminished chord? With an Eb instead of an E in there...? Wonderful work anyways. Thank you. Take care
@TheWashboardResonators
@TheWashboardResonators 2 жыл бұрын
Good point! Lots of ways of thinking of that chord in different contexts. A-6 b5 is one. F#dim / A is another. Ab 7 / A too. A dim 7 too! Looking at it again I prefer your analysis!!

Can you comment on the recording speed/pitch of his songs?
@TheWashboardResonators
@TheWashboardResonators 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I’ll do a whole video in time. Essentially all the rumours of that in RJ’s case are nonsense. Elijah Wald is a preeminent RJ scholar and his writings on the subject should be enough to stop that myth. They can be variations in pitch of a a few percent each way from masters because of the mechanical nature of the equipment used for manufacture of 78’s. In a few cases back then records were speeded up for excitement. RJ’s all relate to standard pitch and having his guitar with capo. Looking forward to sharing my evidence on a later YT video.

Very, very, well done: by far, the best lesson on that subtile piece. However, I'm still not convinced by that guitar. I know that, being so old, it must cost a kidney (and the major part of a liver), But like most acoustic Gibsons, compressed and supercharged in the medium range, it lacks much of treble and dynamic. Maybe am I biased by my Martin culture (or maybe, am I turning definitively deaf), but I don't hear a better sound from that L1 than from my $100 little Stella... Doctor, please, is my case serious ?
@TheWashboardResonators
@TheWashboardResonators Жыл бұрын
It’s an incredible guitar. The guy that sold Mark Knopfler his famous National Resonator just did some work on it. He’s one of the UK’s best guitar builders. Steve Phillips. He said it was an incredible instrument. It’s not the loudest but it’s rich and complex in real life. Go back about 10 videos and you’ll see a ‘British Blues Road-trip’ video talking about the work and meeting Steve. They’re weird guitar’s because they’re made lightly and need to be dialled in for the best sound. In the flesh it’s great (I think). Worth every penny - which because I traded other stuff I got cheap means it didn’t cost the market value of about £6k. I love having the same guitar that Robert Johnson played for I reckon a few months. One man’s junk is another’s treasure. I have a 1942 Harmony Stella I paid £200 for I think it’s also great in a different way!
@SergeCeyral

@@TheWashboardResonators Thx so much for your extensive answer. Never said that Gibson was a piece of junk... I think YT is largely responsible for the disappointing sound quality we hear: I expected more magnitude and richness, but what can we have with a deep compression and narrow bandwidth...

Hey Keith. All over!! We’re both into bespoke tailored suits for stage as well as ethical small batch British / European made stuff in the vintage style. In this video the shirt came from a charity shop / goodwill. The trousers are 1930s replica ones from a British brand called Revival Vintage. We both have lots of their shirts. Favourite brands you can google or Instagram are; Thomas Farthing, Stanley Biggs, McNair Shirts, Revival, Some Like It Holy, Loake etc. The bible for us that we both subscribe to for doing vintage style but creating our own look and mixing ready made with bespoke items is a periodical called ‘Chap Magazine.’ The movement this magazine promotes is called ‘slow fashion’. The idea being you only buy little clothing but when you do it’s recycled / vintage or new but - high quality that you can repair and wear for decades if looked after. Good for the environment and good for skilled Artisans in the west rather than child wage slaves in the east. 🎯🎯🎯
