Note from Alex: These are little snippets of attempting to capture the right feel for Alice: Asylum's music conceptually in the modern era.
My favourite part of Chris Vrenna's work from the original Alice soundtrack was the "found sounds" and old toy SFX he used.
Mixed with classical instruments, and coupled with haunting vocals and child-like hums.
The clarity of sound and cinematic approach to the Alice: Madness Returns OST by Mashall Crutcher and Jason Tai remains equally beautiful.
Taking suitably dark tones and arrangements, to paint Alice in the audio of a more twisted, Victorian-era tone.
By mixing the two approaches, I am hoping we can find a happy medium for Alice: Asylum conceptually.
Landing somewhere between what made both Alice soundtracks true works of art.
These rough audio experiments are nowhere near final quality, but they might offer a little glimpse through the looking glass as to what direction we're seeking.
We want the sound and music to enhance the narrative and emotional weight of Alice's journey, which I hope we've achieved.

Using commercially available sound FX and music loop samples, Alex Crowley created the following audio experiments. Originally released exclusively for Patreon, they are now available for everyone.
The idea was to use sound to capture parts of the narrative, and also create immersive soundscapes for the supporters of Alice: Asylum to enjoy.
All tracks were inspired by the works of Chris Vrenna, Marshall Crutcher & Jason Tai, (the creators of the soundtracks for American McGee’s Alice, and Alice: Madness Returns). These experiments aimed to strike the right balance in feel, tone, hope and darkness.
We hope they sit alongside the original music of the Alice series comfortably.

We are never getting a game with this soundtrack, this concept, this story or this Alice. I'm just super fucking sad. It's like someone died just before they were going to accomplish their dream. This game would have been the great Alice finale we waited for. The story, the design, the music, everything looked so good and brought me to tears while reading it. Especially the Dialogue between [SPOILER] Alice, Chaos Alice and Child Alice hit different after knowing this game would never exist

What's done is done. I'm sure you did what you could. The last thing to do from fans like myself is to respect your decision and thank you for everything. Your hard work, putted effort and heart for give us your vision of Alice in The Wonderland. It will always be an amazing experience to admire your creations. I really like the idea of having more cellos. The string base for instruments was great in Alice returns. The title screen one was magic. Maybe the final version will be more like that?

I think Mad Machinations is my favorite of these. These really bring to mind the soundtracks of the first two games without being derivative.

had been following the alice asylum work for a long while and its devestating to hear the news, such a beautiful series with so much detail put into the concept for asylum that won't be seen on a larger scale. Just wanted to put it out there that all this work the team did would have been amazing to see at it's full potential in the final game

I know McGee said he was absolutely done with the Alice games, but, BUT would he consider making it or letting someone else turn it into a manga series? It’s such a shame that all those years of work didn’t get the chance to flourish into a fully developed game! It’s tragic! My heart breaks for everyone who was working so hard on this. Would EA Games still have to relinquish their claim on the franchise if McGee wanted to turn it into a book series? He will probably never see this and has made it clear he’s done, but it’s a nice dream anyway.

There are also some psychedelic Marilyn Manson piecess made for the original Alice but never released because of some licencing issues. It would be amazing if they could finally use them for Asylum and hire Vrenna again for a legendary twisted fairytale like soundtrack.

I love going back to this as it reminds me of when i found the first game and got into the series in middle school. Now knowing that it wont continue to exist and has ended feels very somber and bitter sweet since we at least get to know what was planned to happen before it ended. I hope one day i can make something similar. Mcgee and the rest of the team who gave this game life before it ever got to live deserve lots of love

The soundtrack is great thus far, and I hope this game comes to consoles 1 day. Given I've always since 2014 on PS3 loved this franchise's take on Alice in Wonderland. Time flies when you realize just 4 years ago we just had concept arts to now a soundtrack sampler of the potential story tone.

Mr. Mcgee it is clear that you put your heart into this project and pay attention to the smallest details, but I am glad to see that you do not neglect the music, as this aspect is extremely important, even vital. As a massive Alice fan, I listened with interest to the songs uploaded here and I think they sound very good. Alex Crowley seems to be very talented! Kudos to this man. However, please don't make the mistake of not bringing Chris Vrenna for this game. He’s the soul of Alice game and needs to be on this project with more than 1 song like it did on Madness Returns. Chris's absence would be nothing short of sacrilege! From everything I've seen and read about this project (though I haven't read the full script to avoid spoilers), it's shaping up to be amazing. The only missing piece of the puzzle is Chris Vrenna. Here is a list of composers who I believe would also be an amazing fit for this project: - Jason Tai (I must say, he did an excellent job on the sequel. A potential comeback for this game could be something truly remarkable.) - Tom Resnick (He created some fan music on his KZfaq channel and it sounds phenomenal.) - Phoenix Glendinning (The ambience music that he crafted for the Eastshade game is simply gorgeous. I can easily envision him creating similarly beautiful and evocative ambient tracks for the Wonderland, which would be absolutely breathtaking) - Jesper Kyd - I find Jesper Kyd to be an incredibly talented composer, particularly with his amazing ambient music for Assassin's Creed 2, which is a true masterpiece. The thought of him potentially creating some ambient music for Alice Asylum fills me with excitement and anticipation. and a few other composers as well. To sum up, in my opinion, it would be fantastic if Chris Vrenna were to compose the foundational soundtrack for the project. Then, Alex Crowley and a small team of other composers could each contribute their own unique styles to create a truly exceptional final product.

Now that this game has been cancelled, and McGee just retired, I really feel like I'm lost. I secretly hope its not the end of Alice. We might get a spiritual sequel rather than that cancelled threequel, featuring elements of this cancelled game including new elements here & there.

This sountrack is magnifecent and splendid,it combines in an incredible way the macabre and hostile tone of the first game and the melancholic and tragic tone of the second game,managing to combine two things to create a unique atmosphere that complements the story of the third game very well Alice being in a hostile environment and with her having fight not to be consumed by chaos and revelations and a melancholic journey to seek the truth of her mind and life the way it is and live with The third sountrack is my favorite

I like a lot of the fantasy elements from the original game, (Like the mine level) it’s fun to see Alice interact with characters that aren’t necessarily in other versions of Wonderland. (The first song has that same feel.)

Ive loved this franchise since the first game when i was a very small child. To hear that the third, final, and (seemingly) most fleshed out installment was simply aborted in the womb is truly heartbreaking. Perhaps some day in the far distant future someone at EA will decide to finally finish the Alice story. Maybe we just havent bugged them enough. But for now these tracks and the design bible show a tragic reality of what couldve been. Let us hope Alice does not die with a whimper.

I understand that the artist has put a lot of time and effort in this music and I want to acknowledge that. At the same time, I feel it's important to give honest criticism, especially given the scale of this project. In my opinion, these soundscapes are creepy, but they lack the "madness" and an emotional narrative. I think they'd be fitting for a menu or a trailer, but for me they do not carry enough emotional movement in order to support a narrative. I also believe that the arrangement could be improved, as some voices (such as the strings and vox around 5:04) still sound a bit empty. The description states that the audio quality is not final - does this refer to mixing and mastering or also to arrangement, effects, etc.? Right now, some of the sounds sound a bit "stock" to me, as if they had been taken from a sample library without modification. Please correct me if I'm wrong about something and do not mistake this for me not liking the music, I do have a lot of respect for all of your work and I hope this didn't come across the wrong way!

Mad machinations has a really awesome beat and sounds though I feel like it's music for a menu or something. I'm just worried that the music for the levels will not be catchy. Alice madness returns is definantely not as good as I thought before. Stories great, but the game kinda holds it back with the awkwardly timed cutscenes and levels and character facial expressions. Combats ok, but it could use some more combo routes and innovative ways to attack and dodge. You could say the music was perfectly fine, but imo I wish more songs stuck in my mind other than the main menu theme and the battle music. Only like 3 levels had great music like the mad hatters factory theme.

To preface this, this is just my personal thoughts and opinions so don't attack me, thanks. . Ok so, I gotta say, Mad Machinations was the best soundtrack on here. Gates of Rutledge Asylum comes second. The ticking clock and heavy machinery noises are seriously what brings the perfect eerie atmoshpere to Alice McGee's Alice. Though personally, the other tracks 2-4 don't really have that about them. I don't know how to say it, but.... they sound a bit too plain? Like not too Alice-like. They don't have any distinguishable characteristics about them like 1 & 5. Track 3 and 4 especially, I envisioned them playing in the background of the dollhouse and cutscenes from AMR respectively and they don't really fit. The opera singing in the back of all the tracks that have it is also off-putting and very unfitting of Alice's whole vibe. Besides track 1, the opera singing actually added to it and made the eerie vibe whole. Hopefully the composers from AMR are still on this project. Tracks 1 & 5 perfectly execute the horror of Alice's Wonderland in ruins. I know this is just a concept and all, so thankfully there's tons of room for improvement!! There's just no other game that's satisfactory in the style of McGee Alice games. I've replayed 1st Alice & AMR countless times. So I can't wait to play Asylum, even if it comes out when I'm 30😂 I'll still play the hell out of it idc. Love this series to death, hopefully EA gets their greedy claws off all the Alice rights ASAP.
