Play Design Not Helping Zach Wilson | Kurt Warner's Reaction | New York Jets Game Tape Breakdown

Episode 2 on Zach Wilson focuses on things I want to see him do better, such as recognizing what he is seeing and where to go with the football. Also, the New York Jets offensive play design at times is not helping him or making the game easier for him. I am wondering what they are trying to do. We've got a young quarterback that you want to be definitive and you want him to put his foot in the ground and throw the ball because that’s where he is so good. I've got to set him up to succeed and I think there are a number of times where the New York Jets are not doing that.
He has to get better at processing the information given to him. He could use some help of course. With the design or execution of the plays around him. You get a lot of guys that don’t know what you’re doing with a particular concept, what I’m supposed to be reading or guys who aren’t doing what they are supposed to be doing so they are clouding the read. Now this is when you get impatient as a quarterback, especially as a young quarterback when you start to panic and try to force things in there because you’re not comfortable with what you’re seeing. You saw that a number of times in the second tape. The lack of processing or how the lack of design and execution affects the young quarterback and made him do things that he shouldn’t be doing. Or slows down his ability to grow because now he is second guessing. We have got to be able to clean things up and help our young quarterback whether it is play design or execution. Then Zach Wilson had to grow in the area of having a plan and understanding how to process from his first guy to his second to his third. Really good when his first guy is open. Where he can just drop back and rip the ball. But we know, in this league, people are going to start taking away those first two guys. You have to go up to the line with a plan of what you’re going to do if that happens. #zachwilson #nfl #newyorkjets

Idk after watching this video, it seems as though Zach is not great at reading coverage or lacks good field vision. Almost each play Kurt went over you can see clear open receiver's that would have an opportunity for some big YAC's but each time instead of throwing to the open receiver Zach is throwing to a heavily covered guy that is going to need to make a contested catch. I would say maybe it is designed that way, but if anyone watched Joe Flaco he was always throwing to the most immediately open receiver unless he was unable to find one, so that leads me to believe that Zach's plays aren't designed to throw to only 1 specific person each play. It is possible the coaching staff just don't trust his decision making to let him control the offense, whatever it may be I don't see much of an excuse to not throw to an open receiver especially when you have as much time as Zach has in the pocket on most of these plays.

@salcirabisi Жыл бұрын
@@JasonMarquisHater I think he does but there is the "old school" of thought (unsure if LaFluer is of this school or not) that the qb should learn the offense and fit into the designed scheme. That's old school and I am 64. It took me forever to see that the days of pocket qb with 3/5/7 step dropback days are over for the most part. Jackson, Wilson (Russell though I think he still is not getting the offense designed around HIS skill set), Josh Allen, and others have proven that the offense should be designed around the QB's talent and gifts. There were too many routes either run poorly (likely) or poorly designed (most likely) that gave Wilson zero to none chance of success.

@@salcirabisi And I get that but how can we for sure say as fans that this offense isn’t designed best for ZW skillset? We don’t even know his full skillset yet as he doesn’t even have a full season under his belt yet due to injuries. Lafleur also runs the Shannahan style offense from San Fran one of the most QB friendly offenses in the league, was there some poor route combinations in this video yes but none of us are knowledgeable enough to know weather it was bc of play design or mis communication of the receivers. There was also a lot of footage in this clip as Warner pointed of receivers open on 2nd and 3rd read options that ZW never got to. I love both ZW and Lafleur but theres clearly improvement that needs to come from both sides.

@@JasonMarquisHater - Zach Wilson has a strong arm and can throw anywhere on the field so nothing is limited. He is also athletic and mobile. Now it is just getting the experience and turning mistakes into smart throws as he sees more and more defenses. The PROBLEM with Lafluer is that he does not help Zach with the problems he is encountering (nor did he help Joe Flacco.) The Jets OL is in disarray due to injuries. They had their guard playing LEFT Tackle because their depth tackles couldn't hack it. Then the Right tackle (who was a backup 4th round pick this year) got hurt before halftime. YET - The Jets ran on 1st down right up the middle most of the game and put Zach in 3rd and long quite a bit. They ran no screens or draws to slow the DE's. They ran only two wide runs (Both hit) to make the De's keep contain. He has not shown an ability to adjust the game plan to account for problems like lack of talent on the offensive line due to injuries. Zach ran for his life most of that game, only one play shown by Warner show him Scramble due to play design. The rest where due to the OL getting beat clean. Those were sacks with Flacco which are drive killers which is another reason why Wilson is the best option. If he doesn't get wrecked (Like Tua) he should be a solid NFL QB by the end of the season on his way to excellent

Only issue is that Kurt does not give down and distance. I was at this game and the Jets ran a lot on 1st down and got very little on those plays. They do not throw enough on 1st down which would give Zach more easy completions and get him in a rhythm and perhaps help with that footwork. When you are constantly on 3rd down and long means that easy check down still means a punt. Last season a punt meant the other team got 3 or 7 points, or Zach got the ball back inside his 15 yard line. Route concepts are interdependent, but so is Offense and Defense. Tom Brady for his whole career could punt the ball and get it back in better field position a lot of the time. Makes QB play easier.

Kurt nails exactly what has been a "Jet" problem for many years: Jets have a problem setting up their quarterbacks to succeed. The Jets need to find a quarterback coach that talks to him the way Kurt walked us through the film in this video. Wilson has talent. The Jets need to look at HIS talent and design an offense that serves HIS talents well rather than throwing him in an offensive scheme and making Wilson "fit" the scheme.

That was also what killed me last year.. It seemed like they where trying to do the 4D Chessmove every down with Zac and when he went down. When Flacco and White played instead they dumbed the offense waaaaaayyyy down to make it easier for the backups which worked wonders.. when Zac came back they pretty much kept the "easier" version of their offense and Zac flourished.. I was hoping they would continue that trend this season but instead LeFleur went back to counterstrategizing his own counterstrategy and confusing everyone in the process, instead of taking the proven concepts that work and then adding to it over time..

The difference between Zach and Justin Fields is, that Fields tries too hard to get to those deeper throws instead of using the check downs when he should, while Zach is too quick to take the check down instead of looking for that larger gain when it's available. Both are things that will be fixed with time in the NFL, and with a better understanding of NFL defenses, and their speed. Need to keep in mind that both QB's are extremely young, and ppl shouldn't be too critical. If they continue to make the same mistakes in year 3, then it would start being a problem and a concern in my opinion. Wilson is in a better position than Justin, due to the talent that he has around him. Has a decent line, some really good weapons, meanwhile Fields has a terrible line that cannot protect the QB, and doesn't have a true WR1. When you look at Josh Allens rise, it was in year 3 that he took the biggest leap. The biggest thing that changed? he got an Elite wideout in Diggs. As soon as he got that alpha receiver his completion percentage improved, yards, TDS and just about everything. Same thing with Tua in Miami and Hurts in Philly. You see what having weapons means to a QB. Look at Aaron Rodgers this year without Davonte.

Call it a double move or as I like to call it a simple deke. Why receivers don't utilize that is beyond me. I know it works because when it is used it creates separation. Just look at guys like Cooper Kupp. He knows he's not the fastest guy so he must rely on every bit of advantage he can. Without the deke you give up your advantage. Watch how these guys run their routes. No deception whatsoever. But to best illustrate what I'm talking about consider the fastest animal on the planet. And it ain't Usain Bolt. It's the Cheetah. His favorite prey is the gazelle. And while the gazelle is fast it's not as fast as the cheetah. Yet the gazelle is able to escape the cheetah 9 out of 10 times. Why? Because he dekes. Starts one way and switches quickly the other way. And because the gazelle has greater endurance he's able to create enough of a gap to elude capture. Guys, and I include Tyreek Hill, even if you were as fast as a cheetah, you'd create greater separation if you deked.

Zach stares down his first read entirely too long which results in him being check down Charlie. I personally think the game is too fast for him, his arm talent is elite but it's worthless because he's sub par at processing the game. Same as Sam Darnold. It’s interesting, how many people criticize QBs who take the easy, quick throw. Brady won alot of games, knowing what he’s seeing, at this point pre-snap, and going straight to his check down. Easy throw, easy catch, stay on schedule. That’s how you move the chains. Passers who wait for their initial read to develop, or who force the ball, lose games. Take the easy completion, and live to fight another down. It’s not sexy, but can win you alot of games.
