This really makes me appreciate my poor mum. She was widowed not long after my little brother was born and I was about three. There were eight kids (Catholic obvs) so every one of us gave her cause to worry at some time or other, including my second oldest sister who got pregnant at 16 in 1969. She met every single problem with equanimity and a huge amount of love

That was brilliant. I remember watching it first time around. I grew up Catholic after my mum converted. My dad would have nothing to do with it and it never resonated with me either. However, watching this evoked many memories and though I'm more Pagan in my sympathies, I still ask St Anthony for help when I can't find something 😆

A great play and the message here is that religion is a form of control and the only one that has control over me is ME and that folks is why i am athiest. Supurb cast and Carmel McSharry was great a bit later on when she took the place of Dandy Nichols opposite Warren Mitchell ( Alf Garnett ) and its always good to see Syd Taffler. The rest of the cast are well known too and this was very well produced.

The idea of limbo was one of the first things I thought was horrendous rubbish when the nuns at school tried to tell us about it. I remember thinking if god was the wonderful person they talked about when they told us about Jesus then he would never have tolerated the idea of original sin and not letting babies into heaven.

My gran was a devout Catholic, she asked her priest about this as it was something she couldn’t accept. His reply was “The God I know & love wouldn’t punish an innocent baby and I’m sure the God you know wouldn’t either” she never questioned it again.

It seems to me that quite a lot has been edited out. Some scenes don't run smoothly from one to the next, for example at 20min 30secs where it cuts from them in the car to the house, discussing the pregnancy. What's been happening in between? Excellent play though.

Not an original idea. I once read a story by Gerald Kersh about the same situation. Only the man converted and became so fanatically Jewish that he ended up refusing to marry the girl because her family was so lax and non-observant.

Religions supposed to bring the people closer together. It's done the opposite. It's not the religion's fault. It's the ignorant people's fault. I get along with anyone with any religion or even with no religion. Regular people just look for any reason to start a conflict. Because they are insignificant.

Religion! Mumbling replacing prayer and hypocrisy all over. Atheism has its benefits😊
@mariefalmouth9302 Жыл бұрын
The rosary - which the mother is saying - gave the Irish great strength during the time of famine and the colonial period. Worth seeing the parallels between Catholicism and Judaism before making a blanket criticism. Catholicism is the denomination which most Jews marry into. In the UK, Catholics and Jews were both - in decades past - flung out of Anglican school assemblies for being 'different' and Catholics are still regarded as a political threat in Britain today. Things get much worse in this country and atheists will be looking for more than New Age philosophies to hold onto.
@davidfr8218 Жыл бұрын
@@mariefalmouth9302 Atheist here not looking for New Age philisophies. Or any other alternatives to religion as my life is fulfilled enough thank you. Ex-catholic and I recognise the prejudices and hypocrisy here - all too real. Viva atheism!! I just love everybody. Great to see a teenage Linda Robson. Cheryl Hall was very underrated and great at any rôle she played.
