I've been using Steam Link in various forms for a long time. Over Wi-Fi you should expect dips in quality once in a while, perhaps once an hour. Audio will stutter and visuals will get pixelated. After a few seconds it will be smooth again. Also, the input lag is not insignificant, which is useful if you're bad at a game and need something to blame. ;)

Fair warning, Steam Link might not work properly for you. I have found that game streaming applications are kinda particular. Steam Link works great for my cousin, but is practically useless for me. But Moonlight and Parsec work great for me, while those don’t work that well for him. I recommend trying out all three and finding the one that gives you the best performance Edit: Forgot to mention, I recommend installing Parsec either way. When installing it, make sure that you check the option making it available to all users. This ensures that it starts on boot, even before login. Super useful for any potential troubleshooting when you run your PC headlessly.

I had been thinking of getting a telescopic controller. Although with the money it would cost, I'd probably rather spend a bit more more towards getting something integrated/dedicated like a Odin (I think that runs Android and Steam Link doesn't it?). When I've used Steam Link on my phone before, I felt that any overheating issues and battery life drain isn't really ideal for a device I'm glued to for phone use. Not sure why nobody is talking about this Methodology. It works flawlessly! I've left several larger games on the main system and just streamed them using Steam's service. Moonlight works yes, but its finicky at times and using a perfectly functional service already with the game library you have (with importing non-steam games so easily) it makes sense to just use it. Moonlight after exiting a game will take time when killing the process so you see the desktop and it doesn't seemsely exit the session. Steam uses a similar approach, its just way more streamlined (Steamlined?). I can even take this a step further, and just dock my deck, and use one of my phones with the kishi and use steam link to connect it to the deck's library. Such a cool method. Thanks for covering this underdiscussed jewel.

You can connect directly to your Windows PC if you have a MIMO wifi adapter. Not only does this reduce latency, but it also means your streaming PC can continue to receive internet via the same wifi adapter and there is no need to have your streaming PC hooked up to the router via ethernet. The only downside is that it no longer seems possible to have Windows 10/11 automatically enable the wifi hotspot on startup, and you have to stream the desktop to your device via the router in order to turn the hotspot on without physically going to your streaming PC. This means a bit of switching between connecting with the router and the hotspot, but it's well worth it for the smooth result if your router normally gives you problems.

Don’t know if you’ll see this but I have 2 questions: Do you notice a massive increase in battery playing over streaming as opposed to natively? Also you set the resolution limit to 720p, is there any advantage to going higher? I know the steam deck screen is 800p but would we get better image quality by sending a 1440p image and downscaling or is it just worth it to limit to 720p
@claytonyoung1351
@claytonyoung1351 Жыл бұрын
It will use a little more battery than just being on. The higher resolution will increase bandwidth consumption, so may increase lag depending on your network. So 720p limit is good for most small screens because 1080p isnt noticeably different than 720p on a small screen, but streams better at lower resolution. Even 480p is good if on a phone screen.

Ive been doing this for many years, but using Moonlight, I also have a dedicated Unifi Wifi 6 Router for game-streaming both to my phone and to my Oculus Quest 2, the input lag is not noticeable these days with Wifi 6, also do this to my Apple TV's using Moonlight.

Big thing to note…iPad pro goes full screen with steamlink and plugged into an external monitor. You will not get the black bars on the side on the external monitor…this is great for controller supported games but will break k/b + mouse games…unless anyone knows of a fix.

The thing is the smartphone have a weird aspect ratio and u get crappy black sidebars however !!! Getting to play your games on a super ambled screen that's nice 👍 that would so awesome to connect super ambled tablet with telescopic controller would be sublime .

Does this only work around the house ( ie on the same network)? Or can you do this to remote play from across town?

I have to say thank you sir. Because of you I finally got my steam connected to my phone. That is with the backbone device through my PC. The one question I have is do I have to leave my PC on if I am playing from another location? Or do I have to have the game that I am playing on my PC to play on my phone. If so or even possible, how do I do that?

I want to know things like play time on the Steamdeck for battery life and stuff like that. Battery life for remote play vs using XCloud? I cant find this info anywhere and Logi has a pure streaming device. So is it worth spending a little more to use the Steamdeck? Does it do a better job then Logi or worse in that area? Thanks for your videos.

I can only reliably stream using an Ethernet cable on the device I am streaming to. That kinda defeats the purpose of a portable gaming device. I would have to plug the steam deck into a docking station that is connected to an Ethernet Cable.

Or get even better image quality and performance with moonlight. N.B. moonlight works on AMD hardware too, you need to use Sunshine server software.

How many people actually do this in their home and why? Why would you play on a phone or steamdeck instead of just playing on your pc? I’d only want this for actual remote play outside of the house.

Why does he get the red graph spikes? Red is for decoding, so the steam deck sucks at it? Mine does the same. It says it runs at 60 but you feel these spikes.

When you say stream play, does the laptop or desktop open the game to mirror on the phone or it only opens stream link on the device you are using to play.

My Windows laptop only has 5GB free. After deleting files and optimising my drives the most I can get to is 10GB free space. Would that affect the performance (& temperature) of my laptop? Or better just get an Xbox console? Or use an Android (or iOS) tablet to play my Steam games?
