I spent almost a decade here. There is a British community although it's largely integrated with the Germans. The larger community can be found in Los Gigantes where I also lived. The problem is, that many ex pats are transient and leave after six months. Many others have an agenda and are untrustworthy. Still others are evading child support and other responsibilities. A great number are what we called Sparrows - they come for the winter months. I was fortunate insofar as I lived with a German woman who had a good foothold already and that way I met both Germans and English. I deliberately befriended Spanish speakers in order to learn. I got a good handle on the language after a few months, but I already spoke fluent French so I had a shoe-in already. The local population won't do English well as this is not strictly speaking a big British tourist spot but one which attracts mainland Spaniards during August. A lack of knowledge of the language shouldn't be too much of a hinderance unless you need to go to government offices for tax, property or some other reason. When this happens, you can hire a bi-lingual Brit or local. the locals aren't very driven. The family dynamic is very tight and children are expected to work as a camarero (waiter) while working close to home. Those with more ambitious parents will send them to the University at La Laguna on the other end of the island. It's a lovely place to live. Genuinely wonderful.
