"Chicago" veteran Ryan Lowe joins Seth with a performance of an unusual duet-made-for-one from "The Phantom of the Opera" and displays his unique talent for reaching the high notes that mere mortal men (and even women!) can only dream of.

JmeaHD His chest voice timbre, the way he sings, his lower notes, his tessitura in general points to a tenor and I can hear his acoustic shifts around the same place where a tenor would have them. Baritones have way richer voices.

Yeah Countertenors don't typically have such a dark voice quality up in that octave, it sounds like an alto with an upper extension by pure sound colour alone, but seeing that this is someone with bushes and a tree, I'd say male soprano

His voice is amazing! And he recently celebrated his 18th year of playing Mary Sunshine! At the risk of being that person, I think he's not a sopranista, but rather he is a mezzista. He has a sweet, warm timbre and the way that he trills is more indicative of a mezzo. Also, he says that he has to push to reach a high C, and a sopranista shouldn't have to push. For an example of a sopranista, look up Alan Richardson.

actually just to make it clear, the only time the vocal folds aren't ripple-waving is when air is blown past them without any closing muscles being engaged. The falsetto position is actually when the cricothyroid muscle is engaged solely, making the folds at their most taut position, thus creating a "less-full" sound. Counter-tenors sing with a longer vocal-fold position but with increased mass and subglottal pressure to supply body and core to the sound. I just needed to clear that up.

He is singing in a high head voice, but technically it isn't falsetto, that's way you can hear it different, because his vocal chords are actually vibrating which doesn't happen when singing in falsetto register.
@26109216
@26109216 11 жыл бұрын
yes, I agree with you the vocal chords produce the sound (it can only be produced by them) i never said they didn't, what I meant is that when sounds are produced in falsetto they aren't as full, rich or resonant as when produced when the chords are vibrating, in falsetto the chords are more relaxed, the chords don't vibrate they produce the sound differently, whit less air pressure, that's why falsetto sounds thiner and more fragile, and is not the case of Ryan Lowe he is a countertenor.

@eustazio I think falsetto is too negative a term to use to describe Ryan's higher voice. I like what puccinilover used, "head" voice. There is nothing false about Ryan's voice and it is full sounding too. Most people use "falsetto" because they base it on the note being sung (e.g. it has to be falsetto because it is too high for a male). I'd suggest in using scientific methods to ascertain whether it is falsetto or not.
@eustazio
@eustazio 12 жыл бұрын
@mradaChris i'm a countertenor. my falsetto is full, but it's that... falsetto. i can do the same note in plain voice and it has been proven scientifically that the vibration of the chords is different (not the whole chords are engaged). where you place the resonance is another story, but until you show me a guy, untouched, with an endoscope showing he's using full voice on soprano notes, it is *falsetto*. girls using head voice have the whole chords vibrating. period...

@eustazio Well I think that women and men make the same vocal productions regardless. So there would be a falsetto for women and head voice for men. Vocals are only different in length. I think using scientific methods is the way to go. I have yet to find an adequate video showing the difference between a falsetto voice and a non-falsetto voice. I'd love to hear your full falsetto voice and analyze it with a spectral analyzer.

I'm not really certain about the mechanics of falsetto, but if a falsetto singer's vocal chords aren't vibrating, then what exactly makes the pitch??? The mouth, the nose, the throat? Ridiculous the vocal chords are the only things that can make pitches. Without them, the falsetto would be a whisper, which is all air, no pitch. But there are pitches with falsetto, obviously.
