8:45 I just wanna add a bit more update to this for those wondering (source: I was at the game and a lifelong rangers fan) Yes, the game continued. (Not that it matters, coach said it really didn’t feel like a win. Post game talk that game was all about Ben) Fanelli was rushed to Grand River Hospital and airlifted to Hamilton General to be put in ICU. He spent about a week or two in intensive care and actually showed up to watch a game in November that year (to a standing ovation). He managed to make a return to the ice for two years and in his overage year was made captain. Nowadays he’s an assistant coach for one of the universitys hockey teams in the Kitchener area. He was drafted by New York, but ended up not taking a contract. He’s also done a lot of charity work for the brain injury association of Canada through Headstrong. And he’s also working with Grand River Hospital. I’ve met the guy, by far the greatest guy you could meet. (His story also got me through my cancer battle, he’s a personal hero of mine.) Also, I just want to shout out the class shown by Erie for joining in with sympathy, and that sense of community coming together for something more than hockey. Y’all are classy 😊

Thanks, I'm surprised he lived, that just might be the most brutal hit I've ever seen in hockey. If that's how a hit like that sounds with a crowd, I can only imagine what hockey will sound like without fans.

@lynn-marieflechner5406
@lynn-marieflechner5406 3 жыл бұрын
polaviqx So basically, this took place in the middle of the second period. Michael Liambus raced up from Centre ice and pretty much wrecked Ben Fanelli as he was playing the puck behind the net. Bens head hit the sanction and the force of the hit broke his helmet in half. Liambus received a 5 minute match for charging and suspended for the rest of the season (he was already overaged). Ben fractured his skull and the game was halted for 40 minutes so they could stabilize him enough to carry him off the ice on the stretcher. Edit: Hope this answered your question :)
