From Playford's Division Violin (1684), variations on the popular song "John come kiss me now," arranged & performed by Augusta McKay Lodge.
Both Davis Mell and Thomas Baltzar composed variations on the tune, and Augusta has made a mashup of the best ones and added some ornaments of her own. This work, performed at our Musica Transalpina concerts in February of 2023 is presented for the first time in our new 8K video format.

This is one of those times where you hear something for the first time that compels you re-evaluate everything you’ve heard before, in this new context.

What a rollicking lot of fun! Reminds me of a time several eons ago when I was in college and Nic McGegan brought a modern copy (along with copied parts) of the Playford Dancing Master to class. We didn't play anywhere near as well as you do and were sight reading it, but we were all enjoying ourselves Immensely. When the hour and a half of class time was up, Nic told us that we were free to go, but that if any of us wanted to stay, those of us who remained could continue playing, but for no additional credit. No one left, and we were all having so much fun that I rather doubt that anyone thought of leaving even for a moment. Only two people put there instruments down for a few pieces, and they did it so that they could dance! Your rollicking rendition transports me back nearly half a century to that classroom in the spring of 1978 as if it were yesterday, when a group of students and their professor were further transported back over 300 years to enjoy the same good fun which people back then were enjoying. For several hours, they were very much in the flesh in our minds, laughing and loving, and dancing, just as we still do today. Thank you for the time machine, and yet another of your wonderful performances. Though I will probably never be able to travel to the Bay area, I still always enjoy every performance you put up on KZfaq. If it were possible, I'd be out in a heartbeat to experience the magic of a live concert, and you'd be the ones I'd most want to see, especially now that Nic is retired. I hope your audience and supporters know how good they have it. My guess is that most of them do. Continued best wishes, Hanneke, David, and the entire VoM family. Your output is treasured and valued!

I love the tone of this violin. It has that rich and soulful quality I adore (rather than the tinny sound I sometimes hear from other violinists). I never heard this song before. I fell in love with it immediately. Thank you for sharing this joyful music.

What a delightful mashup! I'm familiar with the Baltzar variations but wasn't with the Mell version, but this is an absolutely lovely addition to the violin repertoire, combining the two different sources. Augusta's playing is stellar as always, and the continuo group tight and focused, perfectly balancing the virtuosic violin part. Excellently performed. Thank you as always!

Conocía la versión para virginal de Willian Byrd, también espléndida cómo está. Ignoro si era una canción popular de su época o una coposicion propia de W. Byrd. Agradecería aclaración .
