Ever wanted to play an old VHS tape on your current TV? You're in the right place. Here is the adapter I used in the video - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
This is another media class project. It was to simply make a "how-to" video, I made a script and was hoping to transform this video into a skit. Basically, it ended with my old VHS tapes trying to kill me. I know. What a twist. Laziness prevailed, and I ended up not doing it.

Heyo! This video seems to have blown up (as far as my channel goes) the past few months. Thanks all for the support on this small class project I made over a year ago! If you guys are interested in more VHS content from me, I did another project concerning them, which you can find in the link below. Of course, I also have my vlogs and short films up to watch too! Thanks for checking me out! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7icqpWBrc-WnY0.html

I'd like to make an argument. I'm pretty sure most modern TVs still have an AV port. I mean heck, I have a 55 inch RU7100 4K Samsung TV which I got on sale for $500 in July, 2019 & that has AV ports.

For sure, i love all the retro vibes associated with vhs. If i had more room i would definitely collect more. After my vlog series ends i wanna put the whole thing on vhs...might make a video about that this summer. Stick around though, i got another vhs related vid coming out on friday! My 55 inch Plasma gave up the ghost last year. It was the last big tv that had component/composite inputs . I decided to not go for repair and just get a new one . Hisense 5 inch was what I chose. I let my vcr sit for a while over a year then recently purchased some rca to hdmi converter items so I can start watching vhs tapes and laaserdisc on the Hisense TV. Happiness 😊

One good option I found is to buy a VHS player with HDMI. I brought a Toshiba VHS DVD combi RDXV59DT with VHS and Component. The Panasonic ones are better made though and they also made VHS and Blu-ray combi players. The best option I found is to buy a CRT TV with Component connection. I found a 36 inch Widescreen Panasonic Quintrix SR Acuity CRT from 2003. Also looks amazing with PS2, Gamecube and original Xbox using Component.

I had several pre-recorded vhs Star Trek cassettes. Two were duplicated on scotch blanks. I also have Raiders of the Lost Ark and Cheech and Chong that were also duplicated on scotch and all play perfectly now. They’re even in AFM stereo although not marked as such. I bought those in 84. Later I bought Star Trek Search for Spock that was duplicated on Memorex tape and, as expected it suffers from sticky shed. Tape sticks to the guides. No big loss.

I still have a VCR and a few tapes which I play from time to time. Recently I played an old Blinky Bill VHS on my VCR which was hooked up to a 2023 TV that still had AV ports being a Sony (but the TV hated the signal the VCR was transmitting and it kept cutting out all the time like a skipping DVD) I’m guessing it was due to the wear of the tape. Only sharing this story because it was very interesting behaviour from the TV.

VHS tapes are almost always either pan and scan (missing the sides) or open matte (exposing the frame to display things not made to be seen). If you get a letterboxed VHS tape, it will display as windowboxed on a modern TV.

My solution is to only get movies on VHS filmed (and intended to be shown) in the academy ratio. Unfortunately, that precludes most films from 1953 onwards.
@milesipka
@milesipka 2 жыл бұрын
I don't mind the aspect ratio (as long as the TV doesn't force wide-screen on the tape making the image fat), in fact I even prefer open matte since I can see more of the image (something that provides some unexpected surprises - for example the Full Screen version of Terminator 3 (also available on DVD in the States) has the T-X's boobs on full display (not counting the hair covering her nipples) versus the standard 2.35 wide-screen standard prints worldwide which severely crop that shot, limiting her breasts exposure, as well as certain other films like the VHS print of XTRO showing an actress's pubic bush at the bottom of the frame whereas the theatrical print cropped it off at her waist). For me, as long as the print is uncut and complete, I don't f@(king care what aspect ratio it is...

Hi, I have an Toshiba flat screen TV which can use an VHS player because I still have an VCR , and the last VHS tapes were 2005 which is only 17 years ago ( one of these more recent tapes is SpongeBob: trapped in time which is the Dungeons and Dragons parody episode) so it’s good to hear some people still have these machines, which are one type that won’t go dead after an solar eruption from the sun if it resets all the computers or tablet devices to factory reset mode ( which means it’s memory is like when someone bought the device or machine unit….) I still have mine for an reason….

Luckily when my old analog tv went out and I replaced it with a new vizio just this year it had the coaxial and composite hookups so I didnt need any other adaptors. But I was stil having problems playing those vcr tapes on the new tv. Finally I realized that I had to use the composite cables and then use the correct input and waalaa tapes would play. So yes old men are sometimes very slow to get it but they do eventually get it.,,, LOL!

I just inherited the whole Star Trek the Next Generation on VHS collection. I've been debating on watching them or selling because they've never been used. I don't want to take chances on ruining them in my dirty old VCR. I'm sure there's a geek that would kill somebody for them and never watch them because they were never used. I don't even think my TV has a RCA.
@IanMeyersBHP

That's really cool. In my opinion VHS tapes were made for watching, so I wouldn't be afraid to crack them open and play some. But if you plan on selling them you should keep them sealed. But I'm just a random guy on the internet, do what you want with them. A complete set of TNG on VHS can't be an easy thing to come by

the av2hdmi adapter should include a switch to change the aspect ratio, in my case I own an old rectangular monitor that switches from 4:3 to 4:3 stretched, that's what it says, one might think that it should be 4:3 to 16:9 right?

I got rid of all of my VHS cassettes in 2011 and I started collecting DVDs. You will notice a marked improvement in the picture and sound quality, and your DVDs will play as long as you take good care of them. I've never liked Full Screen films, and most movies were filmed in Widescreen, so when you watch a Widescreen DVD, you are seeing it the way they intended. My DVD collection consists of 263 films in addition to my television shows.
