Nick, I'm addicted to this move now. I just keep getting better at it and it's really got me going. I've been working it into weaves now and using it to change weave direction, or even turn 180 and go the same direction, and it all just feels so natural and smooth, it's awesome. I'll post up a video response sometime with it

If your having trouble with this move try pushing your hands forward into the spin so it wraps around the meat of your hands, and as it unwinds pull them back into your rotation. Try and stay away from your fingers til you become more framiliar. A very simple tip that should help alot of you.

you can also get into this from a weave when you switch sides pretend your clapping your hands together let the string wrap then pull your hands apart

I recommend getting really good at them without fire. I've seen several people get burned doing spiral wraps. It's a bit of a silly thing to practice with fire I think. Be careful!

When you clap together (if clapping like for an audience, palms to centre) have your dominant hand slightly lower and retracted from the non dominant. They won't unwrap off your hands :) helped me

You definitely can, although I've been doing it with the striped poi socks from homeofpoi (which are awesome and I recommend them, they feel great). You can see them in my very short, crappy video. I've been getting a lot better since then. I have a set of poi with the two-finger loops style tether but a friend has them and hasn't given them back so I haven't tried the move with those, I do imagine it'd be quite harder than the socks.

@koulis0985 if done correctly your hands stay at the base of the flame and they bounce off quick enough to where the flame isn't on you long enough to burn... the real risk is in hot chains but, i have yet to burn myself doing them at any speed(slower seems to look better). by far my favorite thing to do with poi though. took me a while to build the balls to it with fire but once i did and realized it doesn't burn, it became my favorite... people seem to love seeing it.

for this move I used cotton gloves soaked in cold water so I could easily do this, but it didnt look very well, so I highly recommend to buy some leather ones, but the gloves must be tight to your hand, otherwise u will have problems with wrapping the poi onto your hand, unless u practice a lot, by a lot I mean a lot, cuz u cant rly feel much in heavy leather gloves ;)

Hi Nick! I have a question: I got this exercise with simple poi (thank you!!), but I have some problems with fire poi ( I tried to do spiral wraps without gloves)....is it exactly the same thing? Or I should consider something else with fire? Because, doing this movement, chains hurt my hands, is it regular?? Probably it's a stupid question :) , could this problem depend on my fire poi (my chains are quite heavy) or it's me? Thank you!! You're great!! Ciao ciao!

ive figured out finally the true reason why they fall off the hand........ straighten your wall plane up before attempting it.....if you kick your hands out as the poi travel to the center it will fix the plane and allow the poi to wrap in a proper direction.

@CHIARA89Peixinho There is no totally safe way to do this with fire. Some people wear wrist-guards or gloves, made out of cotton or leather or another non-synthetic material, but there is always some danger. I put little kevlar sleeves around the 3 inches of chain near the poi. That helps but i still get little burns!

In the 'variations' section, are you referring to Burning Dan? I've been performing with rope dart for nearly a year now, and a very good friend of mine has been a fire buddy for practice, and have learned many isolation-style techniques from her poi style as a result. She has been doing poi for three years now, and her style is remarkably like yours - and she learned from him, including this spiral(infinite) wrap. Weird, cause I just sent her your video on hyperloop TL;DR RIP Burning Dan.
@playpoivideos
@playpoivideos 15 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but I still get burns. I use kevlar chain guards and that helps, but still I get little burns. It's best to use wrist guards, and never never do moves like this if you don't have a safety watching with a fire blanket. If the chains get locked onto your wrists you can get hurt for sure.

@nhdude6

I've never had a problem doing this with fire, but I will say don't stall them on your hands. Brief contact, then unwrap. I don't wear gloves or sleeves when I spin. Just watch yourself.

You just move your hands away from each other once they are fully wrapped and it should reverse the momentum and they should unwrap.

start twisting your hand in the opposite direction from the poi right before the hit, this will start the poi moving in the other direction and will prevent them from sitting awkwardly by your hands
